Hi,

does a Junior member have any chance to become merit sourcer? Of course, if he/she proves the skills for it

No and double no for you as you cannot communicate in English so how can you judge how eloquent a poster is?

It is difficult to determine if you have any scintilla of seriousness in such a question.

Of course, theymos has discretion to determine the appointment of merit sources based on whatever criteria he believes is helpful to him, but he did provide a bit of guideline in the OP, and the most relevant sentence to your situation seems to be the interpretation of "somewhat established member."

Does anything else need to be said?

I was skeptical about this merit business, but then got given 10 so think I'm OK with the idea now  Wink

I wouldn't be bragging about receiving 10 merits for your one liner post.  It looks like DeepOnion has a merit swapping program going on.  Is this a new requirement to be accepted into the airdrop?

Wait a sec... so you can get a merit on your replies too? Wow... i really thought merit is given only to the "Posts" which you create... I mean new post or topics which are created by me.

That's new for me and it makes it even harder. Let say if I posted something in a thread at Page 3 and after some replies thread reached to 10 pages. So who's gonna read my "valuable" comment on page 3 ever? Except for those maximum 19 users who posted immediately after me and then new page started.

So only chance for getting a merit is if your comment is on the First Page or Last Page? Or creator of the Post who's actually following the post mostly he is newbie or Jr. Member have nothing to give and nothing to get in the end.

This shows that you are not a good observer. If you just see replies in this particular thread only, you will see that  a number of replies got merits. If there was some rule that only the person opening the thread will get merits, we would have seen a flood of threads here. Ans also then why will anyone leave a reply here as it is not going to give any merit.

Regarding your valuable comment on page 3, not being seen, I guess it is good for the forum. In most of the cases those comments are no needed as the OP has already got his answer in initial replies.

Wouldn't it be abusing of the trust system, if you just give everyone negative trust who receives a significant amount of Merit from another user for a non-quality post? So if you want to give someone negative trust (and you don't care about your own) you just have to give him some Merit for a shitpost and he will be flagged even if he doesn't even know you and he had not the intention to abuse the merit system? Huh

Why will you do this from you main account ? It will result in your main account also getting negative trust and will make the account useless. In case, any one tries to play little smarter by creating a new account for this, he will have to wait for months before getting those merit points in bulk. Smiley

Also, if you feel that something like this has happened to you by mistake or other other account is trying to get you some negative trust, you can always appeal the case. A lot of things will be considered before giving that negative trust.

In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks. The required scores are:

RankRequired activityRequired merit
Brand new00
Newbie10
Jr Member300
Member6010
Full Member120100
Sr. Member240250
Hero Member480500
LegendaryRandom in the range 775-10301000

You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points, half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source). I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.

There is currently no such thing as a "demerit". I'm hoping that the positive merits alone will be fine. I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

Do not beg for merit excessively.

Useful infographics

Forum users have helpfully created some infographics to explain the merit system:
paxmao's infographic
ibminer's infographic
8Habits's infographic
JetSet11's infographic
zentdex's infographic
alia_armelle's infographic

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

Trivia:

For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank. Of that, a certain amount (less than the usual half) is spendable. The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.

If someone sends you 1 merit, the 0.5 sMerit is not wasted; it is just not shown until you get another merit point.

There are stats here, and you can find someone's merit summary by clicking the "merit" link on their profile.
I was ready to move up to the member, I wonder why I'm still Jr.member when I got enough activitiy points, now I knew why. due to this and have to wait until I receive merit points....Garsh

Here's an idea. Let's have all those policing this forum create several sockpuppets for the sole purpose of doling out negative [.red.] trust. That way Google will index the perpetrators. Oh wait ... that's the one section on this forum which Google doesn't index. What the fuck was I thinking?

Here's another idea. Let's have the mods police this forum in weeding out posts that don't belong. Oh wait again ... they're now too busy reviewing posts in seeing if users deserve being candidates as an sM source.

Meanwhile, this: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/serious-flaw-in-serious-discussion-must-read-3068650.

Ah, fuck it! Let's just built a new forum from scratch. Who's with me on this one?

Aside: I just uncovered a bbcode I've not come across before ...

I have a situation on this, because me and my brother are part of this forum, what if I help him or he helps me to rank up by meritting one of my good post?

Is this a violation?
Are we prawn to be banned?

No, this merit was introduced so that members can give merits to their alt accounts and friends so that they can all rank up easily. Smiley What type of questions some members ask here really. Just go through your question 10 times and you will get the answer.

I was skeptical about this merit business, but then got given 10 so think I'm OK with the idea now  Wink

I just don't know if this is a good step towards the future of this forum, but there is one problem with this system.
Most of the helpful post go unnoticed by most of the users. And the one's who find it helpful aren't able to merit it because they simply can't.

I'm even doubtful if the creator of this thread will notice this post looking at the number of replies already to this post. This is the problem which needs to be taken care of. I hope someone could put some light on this.

What is the basis of the claim ? Have you made this conclusion just based on your own posts not getting any merits. Now go to merit stats page and you will  find that a lot of members are getting merits including newbies and junior members. You need to compare your posts with those merited posts to find out the reason for not being able to get some merits.

I am sure that admin must have gone through some of the replies in the official thread. He replied to some of these but that was for initial posts. He is a very busy guy and has to look after other features of this forum.

Same sentiments. Most of the users who have high merits are bounty managers who successfully paid them bounty team. Some good quality post are often ignored. Lol why.

So merits works liek karma in reddit. But as for me, this is not that much of a good "system". Smiley

The thing is even if you did give a high quality reply or  post, if it doesn't get that much attention , you won't get any. Smiley

Plus, you can't just let your merits stay there? woah, thats abit bad.

I have only just cottoned on to Merits. Blimey. It is very much a step in to the Black Mirror theme, no?
