please can anyone explain for me how the altcoins market works.
What are you looking for exactly? I think I'm yet to get your question. The entire market is red and most of the coins have lost huge value. So, it's normal to see the same with your portfolio too.
There's a cycle which market follows- if BTC pumps altcoin doesn’t, if BTC dumps altcoins dump too and if BTC become sideways for a long time, altcoin pumps. So, wait for the sideways.

Not all altcoins will feel the market crash but most of it will when Bitcoin and Ethereum is down. Where does it go? I think that's the main question we all want answer with. There are three gateways right now rather than two, in my opinion. Before it's just cash and stablecoins. But now, it could be riding the hype for an NFT item. Sell your alts for a different name, coin, ticker or project and expect it to make more gains than the previous investment that you made.
Why it's difficult pin point where the money went? There's just too many altcoins in the market now and tracing it all will be a lot of work.

Even though the entire cryptocurrency and none crypto assets on the stock market price are down currently but the level at which my various altcoins portfolio crashed backward baffles me, please can anyone explain for me how the altcoins market works.

I know your feeling. The sad truth is, that if Bitcoin and Ethereum are dumping then all the other coins and especially smaller projects dump even harder than the big ones. This has always been the case as long as i have followed the crypto market since 2017. My Portfolio consists mainly of projects that are new and therefore it took a massive hit back in May this year and it wenn down more than 90% or so. With the recent dump of the market i am at around 20% of it's ATH Value back in the beginning of May. Once the market recovers and BTC and ETH beging to climb it usually takes a while until the smaller cap projects are rising too.

Most altcoins are built upon the Bitcoin Blockchain and so what ever the market trend is with Bitcoin it affects some altcoins. This is why having Bitcoin as a the major coin in your portfolio saves the day. Most of the coin might crash and some would survive but Bitcoin keeps pulling up after the dip

It's really hard to explain things in crypto market, just when you thought that they are supposed to move in this direction, it will go on the opposite.

And for the altcoins market it's doesn't follow patterns although they may have correlations to bitcoin market. And since bitcoin is down, most of the altcoins are also down.

You don't have bitcoin, don't you? If you don't have bitcoin on your portfolio, you really are dealt with bigger losses. Just so you know, it's one of the most needed crypto in one's portfolio. There's no need for an explanation because the market itself is in correction.
That's why if the market goes in correction, bitcoin corrects and being part of it, the most affected and will have more percentage in losses are the altcoins especially those that are not at the top.

I suggest not to study copycats, this is the truth, study Bitcoin, Ethereum, and nothing else, so that you can get a longer time.

The higher the gains the higher the volatility that's what altcoins are all about, when bear market strikes it's always safer to hold the big boys BTC and ETH because they can recover pretty faster than altcoins

It is just as usual. During bull market, the altcoins can increase more, but during the bear market, the altcoins will decrease most. That is the reason I prefer bitcoin during bear market.

I do not know if this is true, but I have heard that some people convert altcoins to bitcoin during bear market, but even if it is not true, altcoins are sold than bitcoin which is the reason for the more altcoin price fall.
