Will it be easy to sell 460 when ZEC will die? These cards are useless for ETH/ETC

Nice build, Phil.

I've seen a few articles with 460s that have single slot coolers. Are there any mobos (other than expensive server ones) that have more than 4 x16 slots?

Edit:

Looking forward to seeing your 460 build Phil.  You always find imaginative new ways to mine that I would never think of.

Still waiting for the corsair sf 450 psu  but I got it running with a bigger psu.  I will take a photo.
Now is this practical no the gpus need to be really cheap.  I got 4 for 440  and that is way more then it needs to be for serious  profits.

Was it fun  yep.
Is it quiet yep.
Does it sip power  yep about 220-232 watts for about 290-300h

It will be 16 inches wide not 19 once I get the corsair sf 450.  I can trim excess wood on both sides.
I aslo believe I can put the psu behind the mobo not on the side of it. I may get it to 15 inches wide.

fan setting is low  and the build is very quiet

about 290-300h

230 watts at the wall

look ma no wires!

this might sound funny, but  if gpu manufacturers are really serious about marketing to gpu miners they should contact our miners developers here like claymore, wolf etc. and send them engineering samples for mining benchmarks before they release their cards to the public

Might be something to email amd and nvidia about

NVidia would not care, their sales to "miners" is trivial at best.

AMD probably doesn't consider it worthwhile, sales to miners would be a very small part of their overall sales even when they DO exist (last year their miner card sales would have been pretty close to ZERO as there were no GPU mineable coins that were noticeably profitable).

Keep in mind we're talking about companies that sell MILLIONS of cards a year (probably TENS of millions some years) - I seriously doubt there has been any year that miners bought even 100K cards in a year since Scrypt went ASIC, and I have some serious doubts about the years before THAT.

17mh  at zec on flypool alone is about 110,000 rx 470s

37.9 mh whole network is about   270,000 rx 470s doing 155h

You do not account for the small market cap of 8.2 million dollars

https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/zcash/

It is really easy to pump the coin as an incentive to buy gear.

If 1,000,000  was flooded into the market for 1 day the coin would pump and sales  of gear would increase more.

Yeah it won't last for decades but it could happen for the next 2-4 months.

270,000 rx 470s at 200 each = 54,000,000 in gpus mining zec  not to mention:

PSUS
CPUS
MOBOS
RAM
CASES

Maybe  75,000,000 in gear for just zec

ZEC has a 8,200,000   market cap  and 75,000,000 in gear mining it.

If the companies selling the gear  many billion dollar companies    don't know this  I would be surprised.

The coin will see action.

Find a coin  with a 9 to 1 gear to cap ratio   besides zec

Games that generate net profit with more or less net income of $100 million are worthy of gpu game benchmarks for the public..gpu mineable altcoins that are still below $ 100 million market cap should also be benchmarked for the public to see...

The only problem is when asics are developed, those small asic companies will be bragging that they are faster than amd and nvidia, and they get free/dominating advertising over amd and nvidia...besides games are very different compared to crypto algos, games tends to be the standard for gpu performance...mining algos however favors one over the other depending on the algo.

---------------RX 490 will be Announced and Launched on December 12th----------------

Inside info?

I suspect it may come early.  as rx 470 prices are really dropping.

Maybe we see a zec price boost on the 10-11th?

a price jump in the coin on 10-11 is an easy commercial for the 490

FYI (since I know there are a few on this thread that like this GPU)... Amazon has the MSI RX 470 Gaming 4GB for a net price of only $167.99 now. $192.99 up-front cost but MSI has now upped the rebate to $25 (was $15 the past few months). I just purchased 1 so now I am up to 5 (of 6) GPUs to build my new rig.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JS9F9K4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

GREAT BUY!  This is my favorite GPU.  I have to put my head right next to the gpu to hear it running!  The efficiency is great and the 188 SOLs ZEC and 28 MHs ETH is really incredible.  Good Job!

Yup... totally agree! And, these are very easy to mod the bios as well, so win-win-win in my book.  I only wish that MSI didn't limit their rebates to 1 per GPU model. Otherwise, I would probably pick up 4-6 more at this price.

Check this one out at Microcenter:

$199 upfront, $159 after rebate and FREE HITMAN™ game code

http://www.microcenter.com/product/468273/Radeon_RX_470_GAMING_X_Overclocked_4GB_GDDR5_Video_Card_w-_Twin_Frozr_VI_Cooling

Wow! I almost pulled the trigger on that but when i looked into the rebate details, I don't think the full $40 is valid...only the current $25 Dec rebate.  They have the $15 rebate over-lapping with it from Dec 1-4, but I seriously doubt we would be able to claim both rebates off 1 purchase. Mainly because they require that you send in the UPC symbol cut from the box, and you can of course only do that once.  Seems like adding the $25+$15 is a mistake on this site.

How come inside of WattMan, I can change memory speed but not core speed?  When I change the more speed or voltage, it reverts back to the original value when I press the 'set' button.  No mining is occurring when I attempt to make this change.

@ xleejohnx you are welcome.

I just took apart the solar array  zec rig.
I pulled the ram the cpu the cpu cooler.  keeps blue screening.

I built a new booster four card rig. I used all visiontek rx 460 cards.
This is a two wire rig! That is correct it uses the 8 pin cpu wire and the 24 pin mobo wire nothing else for power.

I want to make the most compact rig with the least amount of wires for power.

Can not be less then the mobo and the cpu wire.

It does 295H at 210 watts.

To further the build to the smallest size I ordered this psu.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CGGOXWQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

so this should be the smallest cleanest 4 card build possible.

and since the psu has a pcie cable I could pull 1 rx 460  and add 1 rx470 or rx480 to boast hash to about 400h

Hi Phil,

the RX460s.... some say its underpowered for hashing ZEC.... thoughts?

I am mulling over 480s or 470s for my next 5 Biostar Z170 4xGPU builds.

Or should I just wait for the illusive 490s?

Thanks

On the 480 vs 470 issue... most of what I have seen indicates that hash-rates of the 480s are only marginally better than the 470s.  But, they also cost more and draw quite a bit more power, which would seem to indicate that 470s are usually going to be the better choice for overall mining efficiency.  However, I have seen some people claiming that they can under-volt their 480's to nearly mirror the power consumption of a 470, but frankly, that doesn't really seem possible given their respective power specs.

Thank you very much !!!

in addition to Claymore's Ethman... I am also trying out awesomeminer.com so that i can explore an alternative to setting a proxy server. That software has Android and IOS clients and also builtin in script language for customisation. You might want to check it out.

I have also experimenting on simplemining.net and ethOS for a future all Linux rig deployment.

Thanks for the suggest. You're right awesome miner seems interesting , but it is very expensive.
Something like this one but cheaper would be great. If you find something , do not hesitate to share Wink
