I am in the midst of building my 2nd rig, which I'm hoping to get 6 470's running on an ASRock H81 Pro BTC 2.0 Mobo.  My plan is to keep all 6 GPU's off-board using powered risers. I am building this onto a DIYPC open test bench like my first rig but rather than mounting the GPUs onto wood planks, I am hoping to somehow attach them to a wire rack shelf I have bought. Not 100% sure this will work though but am hopeful as my first rig is not really mobile (ok since it will stay in my garage year round) but I want this 2nd rig to be mobile so I can move it around my house depending on time of year. So, I will try to build into this smallish wire rack shelf but if it doesnt work, I am looking into other options.  I found something that looks really nice on ebay so would like to get some opinions on it.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/232139141160?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

The frame itself is exactly what I am looking for but cannot seem to find it without all the extra stuff this comes with.  This is pricey but it does come with a Plat PSU 1200W and 6 risers + all cables needed.  Given this, it seems like a decent deal, but my real question is about that PSU.  I have never seen one like this before so wondering if there are any draw-backs vs the standard ATX style PSU. It looks like it may only have PCIe connectors though, meaning i would might still have to buy a small ATX PSU to power the remaining components. If so, this would be a bit of a waste since I will be using 6 undervolted 470's that should easily allow the full system to be powered by 1200W PSU.  Any feedback on this item would be appreciated.

what is this "brake pedal" you speak of?
@Phil

i am buying a rx 470 4 gb tomorrow.. what brand/models do you run for 470s?

I like the msi rx 470  it is quiet cools well and does not have a back plate  which lets it fit in a four card biostar build very easy.

Got the Corsair sf 450

Tightened the build some more.

it is 15 inches by 13 inches.

I need a atx to fx plate  to mount the psu .

I will be smaller yet about 13 by 13 inches. I will post final  look on tues.

I am pulling 223 watts for 300h

I could add 1 cable  and put in 1 msi rx 470,but  I do like the look and sound (35db) of this pc.

Phil you can add a HDMI dummi dongle and wifi dongle - so rig will be about cordless/cableless and clean

That's a good idea. Thanks

Mine for a Bit

I know faster memory like HBM on the Furys/Nanos boosts ZEC mining tremendously.

HBM memory isn't faster, it's actually slower - but very WIDE. Depends on if the much higher latency handicaps the higher bandwidth too much on if it works well for any particular application.

Like.

I took a short nap just know... only to be awoken by phone call..... I was midway dreaming that AMD actually released "RX500 Crypto Edition" - a card specifically for crypto mining, 8-way Very-HBM memory, OC features, bad ass fans, and installation CD comes with Claymore miner for ZCASH, ETH and Monero... LOL  Grin Grin Grin

I wonder if AMD would actually build a crypto card.... what features, what price? what impact to mining world?

I do not think that designing a specialized gpu for miners would be a very good business decision for the AMD.  Right now they are selling all gpus to all customers (miners & gamers & pc users &...).  If they design a special gpu for miners, they eliminate the sales to gamers & pc users while increasing inventory.  Although, I would love a RX500 Crypto Edition!    Smiley

Wait till I switch out the psu   for this one.

SFX PS get pretty interesting - I've had a rig running on a Silverstone 450 for a while now, originally was in a tiny "media" type SFX case but the case turned out to have really bad cooling.

I think the biggest gold PS I've seen in the SFX form factor was a 600 watter - Silverstone or possibly Seasonic.

Nice build, Phil.

I've seen a few articles with 460s that have single slot coolers. Are there any mobos (other than expensive server ones) that have more than 4 x16 slots?

Gigabyte -UD7 varients had at least 5, possibly 6 or 7. Think all of those have been out of production for a while though.

Think I've seen one or two others with 5 16-bit slots.

NONE of them are particularly affordable of the ones that are currently available.

IMO probably better off going with 470/480s in a 4-card rig on that Biostar MB.

If you want to be SERIOUS about many cards in a rig though, the WX 7100 is a single-slot blower-type design that's a downclocked RX480 on a single-width card designed to be crammed many into a single rig.

 Down side - BLOODY EXPEN$$$IVE.

It's little brother the WX 4100 is the most powerful low-profile card currently available - and might blow away those new MSI GTX 1050/1050ti low profile cards when they actually hit the market.

 Again, EXPEN$$$IVE though.

Yup, I will 2nd that.  Great card like Phil said and is also very easy to mod the bios using strap-1500 method. Oh, and they look pretty dang sweet too. My first rig was built with 4 of these and runs quiet, cool and smoothly.  I have 3 more with 1 more arriving tomorrow to build my 2nd rig.  Really hard to beat, especially at that $168 price point.

I know faster memory like HBM on the Furys/Nanos boosts ZEC mining tremendously.... but would the 8GB version deliver more memory for Claymore's ZCASH miner to freely swim in a larger memory pool resulting higher sols/H/s ...... OR the additional 4GB is a waste of money for ZEC mining?

I am going to,consolidate and organize a bit. I believe the 490s will be very fast.

Nice!  I like the idea of a single slot GPU.

Thanks for the pics Phil!

Once I get the little corsair sf 450 I will photo a few more.

Here, here, I agree ALSO!  Here is what I did to my MSI RX 470 Gaming X 4gb GPUs to get 188 SOLs:  1500 strap, 1900 mem, 1300 core.  This should do it!      MINE ON!

The build was not for roi it was for fun. Just to see how small and neat a build can be.

Point well taken

Quote
while buying 600 to 680h or 720h in the form of 4 rx 480's  cost 4 x 213 used = 852 usd for 720h

so saying the  rx 460 sucks  is pretty much off base even using your ebay example.

Sure! Just a friendly advise to everybody - never buy used GPUs on Ebay - who knows which custom ROMs were used before flashing back to original and sell to you

Define easy to sell...  If you're willing to dump it on ebay, sure, somebody will buy it.

Checked US Ebay in sold items

Only one used was sold recently for $70 (rx 460 4Gb). Cheapest new on newegg ~$115. Direct loses - 40%
New rx 480 8Gb ~$245, can be sold on Ebay for $215. Losses $13

Summary - RX 460 total sucks Smiley

[/quote]

Deleted  your post. As it misses point of the rx460 completely.

The build was not for roi it was for fun. Just to see how small and neat a build can be.

Frankly I can make the build roi with a simple variation add 2 rx 470 with backplates

can be had for 150  vs the 110 I paid

hashrate jumps from  300 to 480  and you add 1 pcie wire that has 2 jacks.

It is then a 3 wire build.

The card has a value if you find one on sale at 110 and you are using biostar rigs.
Any 4 card build on a biostar may have a tight clearance issue.  so rx 460's fix that.

layout is :

rx 470 rx460 rx 470 rx 460

160 + 75 +160 +75 = 470h at low power say 325 watts is a good build.

Lastly   lets use your ebay used card buying example: a used 4gb rx 460's for 70 bucks  would make the deal pretty good since the build would be:

280 usd for 300h worth of hash Just gpus.

while buying 600 to 680h or 720h in the form of 4 rx 480's  cost 4 x 213 used = 852 usd for 720h

so saying the  rx 460 sucks  is pretty much off base even using your ebay example.

Please remember  my fans  at set to 35%  and the rig is far more quiet then any rx 470 build even one with msi rx 470's
