Obelisk strikes back  Grin

We prepared for something like this by adding an extra feature to the SC1. We can do a soft-fork that slightly changes the PoW algorithm which would invalidate the bitmain ASICs, but allow the SC1 units to continue working.
Just wanted to ask about it. If its true how to be if you got some A3 in 10 days and they wont work ? better dont buy it still?

The Sia community over on Reddit has basically split down the middle on whether or not to accept the A3, but because there's no major consensus NOT to... you'll be fine. The Sia dev team has come out and said that they're welcoming Bitmain to the ecosystem and will be "watching" them to make sure they're not a bad actor in the community. So until (or if ever) something bad happens, they won't be doing anything like that.

While it was a shock to them all that Bitmain has done this, the loose consensus is that it's a good thing in the longer-term.

Honestly, I'd never even heard of the coin until the A3 announcement...so if nothing else, Bitmain has brought a ton of attention and awareness.

I bought the Decred miner also for August (but its sooooooooooooooo long away)

Fully expect Bitmain or Halongmining to come out with a Decred Asic miner also, we will see.

That would be suicide. They know it.

I think It’s good the asic manufacturers compete. Prices will go down on the equipment, diffs will go up and coins will be spread more evenly.... I think

In 30 days time you have at least a 50% chance of a price increase. You also have a chance to make 150000 Sia coins in a month according to the spec for the Obelisk. Sia pretty much guaranteed the first batch 6 weeks of 250000 siacoins per miner. Thats roughly 5000 a day in siacoins, at todays price thats 280$. I think that was figured for 4k miners in the first release.

Even if Sia did something Bitmain could also apply a software patch update too

Sia won't do anything they would look worse than Bitmain, its a free market and anyone can produce miners besides I think Bitmain has a interest in the Sia network for their upcoming IA chip.

I have 5 D3's running long with S9's, L3+ and BW L21 I know what to expect. I just don't agree with everyone saying it will be worthless in two weeks time.

If you go to whattomine site.

https://whattomine.com/coins/161-sc-blake-2b?utf8=✓&hr=834560&p=630.0&fee=0.0&cost=0.1&hcost=0.0&commit=Calculate

Under Hash rate enter - 834560.0

monthly profit shows over 20k

Please don't look at that number and think it's what you'll actually make. If you were around a few months ago for the D3, this is the same thing.

The Bitmain business model:

1) Bitmain announces a new miner for a niche algorithm
2) Profit calculators show that you can make what a medium sized S9 mine makes with just one machine, ~$20,000 per month
3) Everyone for whatever reason believes these numbers and buys it
4) Bitmain makes god knows how many millions of dollars off the hype
5) Everyone gets their machines and they're bummed out because the difficulty for that niche algorithm skyrockets and you're left with a near worthless machine
6) Repeat

Like I said, I've never gotten an email directly from Bitmain letting me know the exact date and time their S9 will be back in stock, but I've gotten multiple emails about this A3. They're trying to push them out as hard as they can and sell as many as they can while they can.

cant say that. D3's were months out these are 10 days + D3's did profit pretty well first batch

Well regardless of whether these are being released in 10 days or 2 months, the market will be flooded with them either way in both scenarios once they're released.

Did the D3 do pretty well the first batch though? I didn't follow the profits too closely but from what I was told, people didn't make their money back with them, that's why eBay is flooded with them right now and they're selling for nearly as little as the S7 is selling for which is 3 year old hardware.

first batch did very well for me, NO not $500 a day well but well, ROI in 9-10 days

Can't argue with that!

People love to blame Bitmain. Honestly the information is out there. It's not their fault people ignore the warnings and go ahead and take the risk anyway thinking the best will happen when in fact it will not. It's ALWAYS the worst case scenario that comes to pass in mining. Sometimes we just gotta take responsibility for our own stupidity.
