Anyone here know how to mine with Ubuntu 16.04 with AMD 4GB GPUs?

Basically Windows 7 no longer works...

Tried Ubuntu 16.04 and it works but the main GPU0 needs to be Primary display on the motherboard because if I make it "onboard" then Ubuntu fails load, basically endless login screen, with "PCIe" as primary display its load no problem.

I would used SMOS but I need to use a Wifi adapter. Any way to get wifi to work on SMOS?

My guess is OS was installed without onboard enabled and/or no monitor connected to it.

Maybe a wifi transmitter and a wifi router

https://www.amazon.com/BrosTrend-600Mbps-Adapter-Wireless-WNA016/dp/B0118SPFCK/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?

ask ty from the smos thread

I actually think this could do multiple rigs

rig1 short cable
rig2  "               {   a 8 port eth switch }  to (adapter above  )   to [wifi router]
rig3 "
rig4  "

eth is pushing 444 usd damn!

I found a decent card a msi 5700

https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/Radeon-RX-5700-mech-oc

not the msi 5700 xt

https://www.newegg.com/msi-radeon-rx-5700-rx-5700-mech-oc/p/N82E16814137466?

it uses 1x 8 pin cable and it is now sold out.

He is stubborn as are most sticking with windows.

Although I am running my xmr rigs on windows.

3 ryzen 9 3900x
1 ryzen threadripper 3960x
1 ryzen theeadripper3970x

btw my simple mining ⛏ is whaling i have
seven rigs
using  21 cards

I will add one more rig

it will bring me to: 25 cards. almost no work to manage them.

eth was up to 430 usd today. i hope this lasts fingers crossed.

crazy rental prices on ETH at Nicehash too

hope this last for a few more months

heard that ETH v2 will be next year early instead of end of year

I have 27 GPUs on NH ETH at about 1.2ghs

all of these.. reminds me why I went all Linux/SMOS  Grin

could someone please refresh my memory on the proper procedure (order) for installing new AMD drivers on a 6x GPU rig (mine for 470's but it's probably the same for most Radeon).

Here's my situation. on a Win10 470-4GB x6 rig, I recently tried updating drivers... tried 19.12.2 & 20.4.2 i believe. here is what i did:

- ran DDU
- installed new drivers
- ran pixel patcher right after install completed (before reboot)
- first attempt did not take, had some weird issues so tried again with diff driver version
- 2nd attempt resulted in corrupting my W10 beyond repair so...

- last night i restored W10 and went into BIOS to switch my primary display to onboard graphics

One thing to note is that during both attempts, I had all GPUs still fully plugged into MB and PSU. I think this is where i might have went wrong.

Question 1:  do i need to unplug all GPUs while installing drivers, then only plug them back in after driver install is complete?

Question 2:  do i still need to run pixel-patcher with more current versions of AMD drivers?  I was always using this when using v17 & v18 drivers but wondering if this is still required with their v19 & v20 drivers.

this works for me, currently on nvidia

software is easy, no need to plug and unplug cards.

when some anomaly with rigs happen, i have space reduce to 2 cards up to 1 card per rig. to observe PSU, riser, cards. when things are fine they consolidate again to 3x cards per rig..imagine doing that with 6,8 or 12 cards? LOL

my setup is high density 3x high end GPU, 1200W/1300W PSU.

..i still have some working 2013 GPU risers and my undying second hand purchased 80gb sata HDDs hahaha

I'm actually much more interested in seeing what the next-gen Radeon GPUs (Navi-2) are going to do mining-wise.  In just getting back into mining recently, i was very surprised to see the huge jump in mining efficiency between the RX 500 and 5000 series (nearly 2x hash-rate on ETHash with only ~25% more power draw).  If their Navi-2 cards can boost the eff rate even 20% more, it's going to make things very interesting, pricing aside.

This latest market rally is indeed very interesting. Seems much more sustained and supported than the couple spikes we saw since the '18 crash.  If it keeps up, I expect we could start to see GPU shortages again soon. Maybe not to the degree of what happened back in 2017 but certainly there are some similarities. Current days to ROI on 5600 XT are just a bit more than 200 and if those and 5700 XT's go under 200 days, we could start to see some of the mass buying behavior that occurred in the 2017 boom.

I just got my first 5700 on a good deal and am leaning towards converting 1 of my 470 rigs over to full 5600XT/5700/5700XT before the Dec EOL for 4GB GPUs on ETHash comes.

3080/3080ti release next month hehe
its not interesting, same 10 to 15% improvement , only thing remotely interesting is the efficiency maybe

I was hoping for the 2000 series to drop in price.

maybe get 2080 ti at a decent price

Not likely. Price recently increased and manufacture discontinued.
Also likely a hint at 3000 pricing.

well with coins this hot 🥵 prices may suck.  it is not like it has not happened that way in the past.

pretty nice to see the boost in eth. I hope it lasts till Jan or Feb.

this is the part where some will hesitate to buy cards and some are waiting to sell their cards..both will own cards later on   Grin

vrams..

6gb are the 3gb in the past
8gb are the 4gb in the past

10-11gb are the 8gb in the past

we can say that 10-11gb are still safe because, look a at the 8gb cards now..you can upgrade now and the vram size didn't get in the way. But if the price is right 16gb is the way to go. I think 24gb might ask for too much premium...we'll see.

Well this looks pretty good for me.

https://www.nicehash.com/my/miner/33MP6oHLGnnrVAf1hC3WV2RBXZ2HNsexYw

1300 a month lots of power cost

so maybe I get 500.  Considering it is all paid off gear I am not going to complain.

Looks like i have to go clean my Furys and 390s, and get them to mine again.... at low intensity to save on power and point them to Nicehash.

I was stumped a while ago when my current rigs total around 1gh/s ETH was paying 90-95$ at NH!

Wow. Seems with ETH price hitting $400 and ETH miners fees being essentially triple due to the huge ETH fees, it seems many are dusting off their GPU rigs and powering them on again.

I tried to do the same and basically ran into the 4GB DAG issue on my RX 470 GPUs from 2016.

Anyone know if they will work on Ubuntu? Rather not use SMOS since I need to use Wifi.

10-15% over 2080ti that's 30% from 1080ti! besides it is not just about the cores, lately it is about the vrams, gddr5x to gddr6 to gddr6x..

Vrams in a not so distant past proved to be a  good investment  fury HBMs  was good but the 4gb made it suck in the mid -long term. Gddr5x also turned out to be good investment even with the gddr5 warriors from 1070 fans going around here hehe
