I also initially thought India would win easily yesterday but in the end they were all out for 230 runs in 47.5 overs and the match was tied. The target of 231 runs was not a big target in the ODI format. If the Indian batsmen could have batted patiently till the end then India could have won. Other than Rohit Sharma, the performance was not good, he was dismissed for 58 off 47 balls. Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, Virat Kohli if one of them could have played a big innings India could have won. However, the Sri Lankan bowlers bowled well enough, not allowing the strong batsmen like India to play big innings. The first match was tied so the team that wins the next two matches will win the series.
India's squad for this match saw the return of experienced players like Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Kuldeep Yadav. So we all thought that India would beat the Sri Lankan team very easily. Due to this, India won the T20 series by 3-0 without such experienced players in the squad. Most of the players in India's squad in the T20 series were young. So naturally we had higher expectations from India in the ODI series.
I would say India lost because of bad bowling by their bowlers. In the first 30 overs, the Indian bowlers bowled quite well. In 30 overs, Sri Lanka's collection was only 112 runs with the loss of 5 wickets. But then Dunith Wellalage batted brilliantly. He was unbeaten with 67 runs. Because of this one innings, Sri Lanka could stay at the crease till 50 overs and set a target of 231 runs.
In the first 10 overs, India scored 71 runs without losing any wicket. After such a brilliant start, no one could have imagined that India would not win the match. Expected to see some better batting from Kuldeep and Washington Sundar.
