Playing defensively is the most appropriate way for Manchester United to avoid two consecutive defeats because they previously lost badly to Bournemouth at Old Trafford and losing again will increase criticism of them and I'm pretty sure what they are showing is not a sign that they are improving because the next match they will still be likely to lose or only get one point.

It's true as you said, if Manchester United players seem to play like they're not themselves, they only play according to Erik Ten Hag strategy, but sometimes Erik Ten Hag applies the wrong strategy, causing defeat. Erik Ten Hag is to blame for all of this, he actually not capable but he is too pushy so this will really affect the team performance, it seems impossible for Manchester United to get a top 3 ranking like last season even though they are coached by the same coach but Erik Ten Hag made the wrong player changes this season, especially recruiting players who don't being so useful and throwing away important players, this is what make it difficult for Manchester United to manage their performance.

They were at the verge of crisis and they needed a draw to avoid a crisis trigger. They succeeded with a very defensive strategy and got one point in a match their attacking power was affected by the absence of their captain Bruno Fernandez. Even with Bruno, they could not do anything better in attacking but without him, their power drops a lot.

I was disappointed with Liverpool for failing to win that game. Liverpool passed up 34 chances at goal, failed to make use of 69% possession and 12 corners, and made bad decisions when in good positions. I expected them to bury Manchester United as per they haven’t won against any top 7 sides this season. I’m not happy with Liverpool's performance. They made Manchester United look like a prime Juventus side. They arrived low on confidence and struggling for form after crashing out of the UCL earlier last week. You are right, that is another fact but all are interrelated what I mean is Manchester United goalkeeper also plays an important role so we can't fully blame the Liverpool striker that's why I say interrelated. Manchester city kinda a different team since de bruyne was not playing again as starting line up due to the injury. Relying upon rodri was not enough in helping manchester city to play even better than before. I must be honest that if manchester city can't play without rodri.
Rodri has become a very important player owned by the club and this is the key point owned by manchester city. Having rodri in the lineup was strengthening the attacking line. The game play of manchester city was very complicated once the club played without rodri.
Manchester city losses ability to create creative attack against its opponent which in result manchester city was always losing points regularly. Pep needs to find someone who is capable enough to play like de bruyne.
I hope city will consider olmo during the winter transfer season. Having a good attacking midfielder was a must for manchester city coz we have seen how big the contribution from de bruyne.
