Please re-read the opening post:

I assume this is to prevent a bunch of sockpuppet accounts from trying to game the system.

Some people still have problems with the client. Just delete 'wallet' folder and recover the wallet from seed.
I did that but everytime i restart the client its empty again.
Win 8 and java lol
And what is wrong, you don't see any addresses? Did you try to down load the client again and recover wallet from seed?

I believe it's fine if the giveaway is external. The problem arises if the giveaway requires people to post in a thread, as then it results in a ton of spam. I have no idea why people are posting 'signature added' or whatever they are doing, as the giveaway is external and should be coded to grab the address automatically.
