Ocean conditions in the Pacific Ocean are increasingly suggestive of a potent El Niño event later this year. While that might seem like good news to the water-starved regions of the United States, the resulting torrential rains could be exceptionally hazardous.

Back in March of this year, scientists declared that El Niño conditions had emerged in the Pacific Ocean. Initially, it was thought that the event was too weak and too late to be of any significance, but conditions have changed over the past several months. According to NASA and other agencies, surface waters are getting warmer in the central and eastern Pacific, while conditions to the west are getting drier and cooler. What’s more, these conditions bear a striking resemblance to the substantial El Niño event of 1997-98.....

Taiwan took a direct hit from Typhoon Soudelor early Saturday as the storm made landfall on the island nation's eastern shore, delivering a punishing one-two punch of heavy rain and high winds.

It made landfall just north of Xincheng Township, AccuWeather reported.

An 8-year-old girl and her mother died after being swept out to sea as Soudelor churned toward land. The storm forced thousands to flee and troops were placed on standby, officials told the South China News.

As of 2 a.m. local time Saturday (2 p.m. ET Friday), the typhoon packed sustained winds of 120 mph with gusts up to 150, making it the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane, the typhoon warning center said.

The storm was expected to maintain Category 3 strength as it made landfall, AccuWeather said. "Residents of Taiwan should prepare for a direct strike by a major typhoon," AccuWeather meteorologist Dave Samuhel said....

KABUL—Militants attacked a U.S. Special Operations forces base on Friday night, hours after deadly explosions targeted a Kabul police academy and an Afghan army compound, according to Afghan and foreign officials.

An explosion took place outside the headquarters of the U.S. military’s elite special forces in the Afghan capital, triggering a firefight that continued for hours, foreign officials said.

The base, known as Camp Integrity, is a fortified compound close to Kabul’s airport. At least three Americans were injured in the attack on the camp, a foreign official said.

“There was an attack on Camp Integrity at approximately 10:15 p.m. local time. We are gathering further information,” U.S. Army Col. Brian Tribus, a spokesman for U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan, said. Two insurgents were killed in the attack on the camp, Col. Tribus said.

The attack took place hours after a suicide bomber blew himself up among students at an Afghan police academy in Kabul, a senior Afghan security official said. Besides at least 20 fatalities, at least 20 people were wounded in the academy attack....

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A school bus transporting special needs children got stuck in a sinkhole in the Bronx late Thursday afternoon.

As CBS2’s Jessica Schneider reported, the bus was traveling down the street down Creston Avenue toward East Burnside Avenue, in the Tremont section of the Bronx around 3 p.m.

The bus was taking special needs students to camp, officials said.

The bus went over what was then a small pothole, and ended up plummeting into what became an enormous sinkhole.

The ground opened underneath the bus to something that was about 10 feet long and 6 feet wide.

Several special needs students were on board when the incident happened. They all got off the bus safely and none were injured.

But the students’ parents rushed out to the scene and were startled by what they saw. Many were concerned.

“Very, very scary. The bus driver told me she almost fainted,” parent Wale Woade said.

The scene unfolded without warning. Department of Environmental Protection officials said nothing had been reported as wrong with the stretch of Creston Avenue where the accident happened.

City crews finally pulled the bus out of the sinkhole early Thursday evening. Traffic on Creston Avenue was still blocked off near the scene.

Crews were tearing up the street on Thursday night, and checking the water main directly below to see if any leak may have triggered the road collapse.

“There is a water main under there and part of our excavation is to determine what is going on under there. Whether or not there’s a leak, so that’s why we’re excavating to figure out the source of the problem,” said Eric Landau, associate commissioner the DEP.

The school bus operator was examined by paramedics and was reportedly doing fine late Thursday, CBS2’s Schneider reported.

PERSEID FIREBALLS: Earth is entering a stream of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Peak rates of 100+ meteors per hour are expected next week when Earth approaches the heart of the debris stream. The display, however, is already underway. "Our network of meteor cameras has picked up more than 78 Perseid fireballs since July 27th," reports Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. He prepared this solar system diagram showing the orbits of all the fireballs so far:



The green ellipses trace the orbits of Perseid meteoroids. They are a good match to the orbit of the parent comet, shown in purple.

"Comet debris particles a few cm wide are hitting the atmosphere with an average speed of 59.6 km/s (133,350 mph)," continues Cooke. "The average magnitude of the resulting fireballs is -3.7, about as bright as Venus."

Cooke and colleagues have been monitoring fireball activity for years, and they have found that the Perseids produce more fireballs than any other annual shower. Check out their data.

"Comet Swift-Tuttle has a huge nucleus--about 26 km in diameter," notes Cooke. "Most other comets are much smaller, with nuclei only a few kilometers across. As a result, Comet Swift-Tuttle produces a large number of meteoroids, many of which are hefty enough to produce fireballs."

More fireballs are in the offing as Earth moves deeper into the debris stream of Comet Swift-Tuttle.

The prophet Ezekiel was “Called to be a Watchman” by God, over his people Israel.  When many consider the position of “watchman”, they assume it to be one who only is sent to “care for the needs of the people, watch over them, pray for their needs, and tend to them as a shepherd tends to his flock”.   But, the position of a “watchman” is far more than this for not only does it require a heart of love for the people and most importantly The Father, it also requires Boldness, diligence, fearlessness, dedication, obedience to YAHWEH our Father, and the ability to hear the voice of the Lord.  In biblical times, a “Physical Watchman” was one who stood guarding the city wall, and upon sensing any immediate danger inside or outside of the walls, he would then sound an alarm to warn the people in advance of what lied ahead.   The prophet Ezekiel was called by God to be a “Spiritual Watchman” over the people and much like the “Physical Watchman”, he to had to warn the people in advance of impending dangers.   

Strategically within the Body of Christ, the Lord God has placed “Spiritual Watchmen” over his people.  Like the “watchman” Ezekiel, such are called by God to warn the people of coming judgments, the importance of repentance, and the hidden dangers that lurk outside as well as INSIDE the body of Christ. They are called to speak forth the TRUTH without compromise, having no fear of what man may think, say, or attempt to do to them.  You may know them as “Messengers of God”, or “Prophets of God” but nonetheless, the requirements to fill this position are that in the same.   No one can call his/herself into the position of a “spiritual watchman”, as it is the Lord God’s Call, HIS CHOICE, for He knows the heart of every man and of every woman, and knows in advance just how far he/she will go to please Him.  He knows the weaknesses and the strengths, the faithfulness and unfaithfulness, the willingness and unwillingness of every individual.  The least likely person whom you may judge as “incapable”, or “outwardly weak”, will be the one the Lord will choose as He knows their inward capability, inward strengths and the faithfulness of their hearts towards Him.

There are many within the Body of Christ who’ve been “Called to be a Watchman”, and it is NOT an easy calling, nor a glamorous one as some may think.  It is a very serious position of which one should not take lightly and has very serious consequences for disobedience.  A watchman called of the Lord will often face ridicule and persecution, will be mocked and shamefully mistreated by the very ones they are called to “watch over” as many will despise their speech seeing it as a curse rather than a warning and will close their ears to the truth. However, he/she must have “boldness” and “fearlessness” when declaring what the Lord has spoken for the very reason that for such a one to choose to be silent, and not declare the warning of the Lord to the people when sensing the oncoming dangers, or knowing of the seemingly hidden dangers, he/she will suffer the consequences for the action of disobedience...........

 A US police officer used a Taser against an unarmed driver in Bradford County, Florida, according to footage from the county sheriff who explained the late middle-aged man approached a policeman in an “aggressive” manner.

Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith, who uploaded the video on his Facebook page, says a local officer Jay Raulerson “was confronted with a dangerous situation” during a call to assist a motorist.

Raulerson saw a silver Toyota whose driver was “attempting to wave down vehicles.” It is not yet clear what caused the driver to stop.

The man – in late middle-age and "armed" with sunglasses, as seen in the video - jumped out of his car and started approaching the officer. Sheriff Smith said the man was acting “aggressively,” which prompted the officer to defend himself.

“With literally seconds to decide his response, Officer Raulerson used a less than lethal tactic to bring the situation under control,” said the sheriff. In the video it is clearly seen that the officer used a Taser on the driver.

The “suspect” was taken into custody “for a medical evaluation prior to pursuing any criminal charges,” the sheriff added.

However, the driver could count himself lucky, as in similar cases in the US people have been shot.

It was 21 October 2012. The day before, Perez had been driving his Rav-4 on his restaurant delivery route when he says police accosted him, wanting him to contact a drug dealer who they believed Perez knew so they could arrange a sting. But Perez was less cooperative than they had hoped.

Now, Perez was handcuffed by his right wrist to a metal bar behind a bench in an interrogation room on the second floor of Homan Square. Behind him were two police officers that a lawsuit Perez recently re-filed identifies as Jorge Lopez and Edmund Zablocki. They had been threatening him with a stint at the infamously violent Cook County jail if he didn’t cooperate.

“They’re gonna think you’re a little sexy bitch in jail,” Perez recalled one of them saying. The lawsuit quotes Lopez: “I hear that a big black nigger dick feels like a gun up your ass.”......

A string of revelations by the Guardian newspaper have exposed widespread police torture by the Chicago Police Department (CPD) at a “black-site” detention facility known as Homan Square. Victims have described being detained illegally, without a lawyer, for hours or days, and being physically abused or sexually assaulted.

The city of Chicago has a long history of police violence and torture, with the full support of the ruling Democratic Party establishment, including current Democratic Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Among the most notorious cases of torture occurred under former police commander Jon Burge from 1972–1991. Victims of Burge were often brutally coerced into giving wrongful confessions of murder. Former Mayor Richard Daley was Cook County’s State Attorney during Burge’s reign of terror and refused to bring any charges against him.

In response to growing popular outrage over police violence in Chicago and around the country, Emanuel and the city council saw it necessary to authorize a paltry $5.5 million restitution fund for the victims of Burge, while many victims still remain in jail facing financially onerous legal battles. The main goal of this financial payout was to put a lid on smoldering anger against police brutality and social inequality. Emanuel claimed that this reparations fund would “bring this dark chapter of Chicago’s history to a close.”

However, far from putting an end to torture and police brutality, the recent revelations of victims held at Homan Square demonstrate that torture is alive and well under Emanuel’s watch. Needless to say, Emanuel has remained silent on the revelations, while the CPD has denied the allegations.

The illegal interrogation “black site” at Homan Square is located in the highly impoverished neighborhood of North Lawndale. The neighborhood’s social indices reveal in a concentrated manner the depth of the social and economic crisis in Chicago and other cities throughout the US........

This building looks innocent enough. But those familiar with the secretive interrogation and holding facility describe a shocking display of police abuses



From the outside, you have to concentrate to realize Homan Square is a police facility. At first glance, it’s an unremarkable red brick warehouse, one of a handful on Chicago’s west side that used to belong to Sears Roebuck, complete with roll-up aluminum doors. No prominent signage tells outsiders it belongs to the police. The complex sits amidst fixtures in a struggling neighborhood: a medical clinic, takeout places, a movie theater, a charter school.

But a look at what surrounds the warehouse gives clearer indications of Homan Square’s police business. The yellow barrier for cars at the street checkpoint. The vans in the motor pool marked Chicago Police Forensic Services parked next to the unmarked cars. The black-and-white checkered door to match the signature pattern on Chicago police hats. The floodlights on the roof. The guy with a gun walking outside and smoking a cigarette in a black windbreaker with POLICE written on the back.

“It’s not really a secret location, but it’s kind of a cloistered location,” said Richard Brzeczek, a former Chicago police superintendent.

Police on site, at the intersection of West Fillmore Street and South Homan Avenue, refused the Guardian access to Homan Square on a frigid recent morning.

Lawyers who seek access to Homan Square are typically turned away. But interviews with ex-cops, the few attorneys granted a measure of access, and one person who was detained inside for nearly an entire day describe an unusual, secretive police compound, complete with armored vehicles, surveillance gear and places to hold people for interrogation......

BOISE, Idaho — A group of residents in northern Idaho have lined up outside a U.S. Navy veteran's house to protest claims that federal officials are planning on confiscating the man's weapons.

Idaho Republican state Rep. Heather Scott says the Veteran Affairs office has sent a letter to John Arnold of Priest River warning him that he cannot possess or purchase firearms.

Bonner County Sheriff Daryl Wheeler says he and his deputies will stand guard against any federal attempts to remove Arnold's guns.

However, Veteran Affairs spokesman Bret Bowers says that the agency does not have the authority to confiscate weapons

During Thursday's demonstration, the group at times broke out in song to sing "God Bless America" and pray while waving both the American flag and the "Don't tread on me" flag.

(CNN)Investigators found three people hammered to death with their throats slit inside a Florida home in a case that authorities said Tuesday could be linked to witchcraft.

The way the victims were killed, the position of their bodies and the timing of the slayings has detectives wondering whether a triple homicide was a "ritualistic killing" tied to last week's blue moon, a sheriff told reporters Tuesday.

The victims' throats had been slit and all three of them were hit with a claw hammer, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said, according to video posted on The Pensacola News-Journal's website.

There are "some indications in the investigation that witchcraft may have been involved," sheriff's office spokeswoman Sena Madison told CNN.

Authorities have questioned a person of interest, Morgan said.

"Initial research has led us to believe that there was a potential that it was a ritualistic killing," he said.

Oklahoma regulators have told energy companies to sharply reduce underground wastewater disposal across an earthquake-prone stretch of the state, a move that ratchets up a so-far unsuccessful effort to reduce quakes related to oil and gas production.

The wastewater is pumped out of the ground when oil or gas is extracted, and then put back underground at what is known as a disposal or injection well. The instruction, issued late Monday, seeks a 38 percent cut in the amount of this wastewater being pumped underground by the operators of 23 injection wells, largely northeast of Oklahoma City.

The roughly 40-mile stretch that includes the wells has experienced a drastic increase in earthquakes in the last two years.

Those 40 miles are but one hot spot in a state that has seen a swift and relentless increase in earthquakes since 2010, triggered by a boom in energy production. Seismologists say the briny wastewater seeps into faults in rock far below the surface, effectively lubricating the cracks until the rocks slip, causing a tremor.

The epidemic of tremors in that stretch is especially puzzling, officials say, because the 23 wells are comparatively small. The wells injected about 8.8 million barrels of wastewater into the earth last year, a tiny fraction of the 1.1 billion barrels buried statewide in 2013, the last year for which data are available. About 3,200 disposal wells are active at any one time, officials say.

“The seismicity is off the charts, and we don’t have any high-volume wells there,” said Tim Baker, the director of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission Oil and Gas Conservation Division. “So we’ll go ahead and reduce the volume and see if that has any effect on seismicity.”

Regulators have previously taken action against some individual disposal wells and tightened requirements for new ones. But Monday’s action goes well beyond those efforts, requiring reductions in wastewater disposal for all wells in the earthquake zone, regardless of whether they have been linked to tremors.

One of the commission’s three elected officers, Dana Murphy, suggested in a statement on Monday that the new plan was an indicator of more sweeping actions to come.

“There was a time when the scientific, legal, policy and other concerns related to this issue had to first be carefully researched and debated in order to provide a valid framework for such action. That time is over,” she said in the statement. “We must continue to take progressive steps, and do so as quickly as possible.”..........
