Nothing like healthy scepticism and hard evidence
https://www.space.com/38313-elon-musk-spacex-fly-people-to-mars-2024.html

It's a pity that Musk didn't remember to adopt this strategy to use the Big Freaking Rocket (BFR) as an all purpose rocket before spending so much money and time building the Falcon Heavy.

I guess not even him believes Space X will send the BFR to Mars on 2022 and humans on 2024.

Well, but may be he'll made it before 2030. That would be a major victory.

Of course, this all purpose BFR seems a great idea to solve the cash problem.

But let's see first how the Falcon Heavy flies and then see if Space X manages to send in security NASA astronauts to the ISS and tourists around the Moon on 2018.

I'm certainly in both hands for investigating and opening all discoveries for the benefit of humanity. Last time we will see how our planet practically goes on the way when it goes out of order. Perhaps indeed other planets we need for life. Only there is a small chance that colonists from other planets will be able to bring some sort of infection or virus a virus that will destroy us here on planet Earth.

Most people speak from a feeling of reasonable well being. Few people speak when they are sick or dying. Yet few of these "well" people will last more than, say, 100 years. Space X is a money-making hoax... even if it works.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield on Settling Space: 'It Won't Go as Planned'

As the first Canadian astronaut to helm the International Space Station, Chris Hadfield has done a lot of thinking about what it will take for humans to live in space long-term. NASA, Russia, China and even Elon Musk's SpaceX are talking about sending astronauts to Mars in the 2030s, and—given that it's Canada's 150th anniversary, a good time to take stock of where we're going—we were curious about how this country can contribute to humanity's future in space.

MOTHERBOARD: What skills does a leader need to manage astronauts at a future space settlement?
Chris Hadfield: From a pure leadership point-of-view, I think you need, above all, technical competence. You can't get help from anyone. You get advice, but it's not the same. The second is—under the broad brush of interpersonal skills—what are the strengths and weaknesses of a group of human beings [you are managing], and how you can help them face the issues, no matter what?

Who said your coming   YOU HATE GAYS Cheesy  sorry no room on our space ship for gay haters

Badecker come on lets get on the space ship  Cool.    WHAT your praying to Jesus for a lift

And buffalo killers are banned  ..Only joking just stoned

Tell you what Elon we will all smoke some good shit on the way to mars..PARTY TIME

Anyway I don't wanna come with you, if the space shuttle is built by Space X. I am concerned about my own safety. I don't want the shuttle to explode in the outer space, taking the lives of everyone inside it. I would rather chose a Russian or a Chinese space shuttle.
Funny you Russian people. How can you trust a Russian spacecraft if the last few years you have more bad starts than good. I would rather recommend to put all the Russian government in a Russian space ship and launch it into space. Maybe then would be better to live. After all, life on earth is better than Mars.

If EMdrive is real and scales with Q factor then we get almost Star Trek level Technology

If the NASA emdrive performance of 1.2 millinewtons per kilowatt.

8.3 TeraWatts of power would be needed to provide 10 million newtons of thrust to accelerate a 1000 ton space-craft at 1 gee of acceleration. We have no power source that could generate 8.3 TeraWatts for a 1000 ton spacecraft.

If EMDrive performance increases with the Q-factor as some have theorized, then we could tune the cavity and make it superconducting. If we take the NASA EM-Drives and pump the Q factor to ~30 million, then about 2 GW power is needed for the sustained 1 gee thrust.

Theoretical nuclear fission reactors could power such a spacecraft. Gas-core or magnetic collimator fission-fragment reactor might be work but have been theoretically designed and have very limited experimental development.A fast-spectrum reactor with a thermal output of ~ 6 GW and ~35 % thermal conversion efficiency would be a first pass design to supply the power.

Musk is doing admirable things, however he promises too much. He should be more careful.

Musk suggested about 50 years for having on Mars 1 million persons.

"Elon Musk: A Million Humans Could Live on Mars By the 2060s" http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/09/elon-musk-spacex-exploring-mars-planets-space-science/

It would be great, but it's not going to happen in 50 years, not even close.

We'll have a Mars colonization, but until we find economic reasons, we'll have there a few hundred persons, at most.

Even if Musk spends a lot of money on the Mars colonization, I am sure he will eventually reap the rewards, I believe Mars is filled with precious gems and they will mine these which will turn make a very good profit for Elon Musk and his company. I think he should take the initiative and reap the rewards.

He will never get a profit out of space mining. Although the diamond market is worth some $80 billion, only 5% to 10% of that actually end up with the raw diamond producers. The remainder gets eaten up by the middlemen and the jewelers.

I think we're a bit going too far to the future in here. I don't think we're sure that whatever we get from mars can be used and utilized here. It may take a lot more study before we're able to do that. And if ever we take some items from mars, i don't think it would be easily available for normal citizens
I think in the near future the question of the colonization of Mars will not rise. Any research must have meaning and economic benefit. What could be the benefit of colonizing Mars? Better to spend the money on development of alternative energy.

The point is that Mars colonization advertising has economic benefit. Since we will never colonize Mars, the benefit will be to shift funds from average people to the pockets of the colonization advertisers... advertisers like Musk.

The colonization of Mars will be useful only if our planet becomes uninhabitable. If that happens, then we may need to find a new home. But then, I don't know whether Mars is capable of sustaining such a large human population.

Tardigrade in Moss

Is this an alien? Probably not, but of all the animals on Earth, the tardigrade might be the best candidate. That's because tardigrades are known to be able to go for decades without food or water, to survive temperatures from near absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water, to survive pressures from near zero to well above that on ocean floors, and to survive direct exposure to dangerous radiations. The far-ranging survivability of these extremophiles was tested in 2011 outside an orbiting space shuttle. Tardigrades are so durable partly because they can repair their own DNA and reduce their body water content to a few percent. Some of these miniature water-bears almost became extraterrestrials recently when they were launched toward to the Martian moon Phobos on board the Russian mission Fobos-Grunt, but stayed terrestrial when a rocket failed and the capsule remained in Earth orbit. Tardigrades are more common than humans across most of the Earth. Pictured here in a color-enhanced electron micrograph, a millimeter-long tardigrade crawls on moss.

Read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardigrade.

Cool

Someone needs to put some of those in a radiation protected container and launch them into space. Maybe when humans die out, space bears will be alive on another planet.  Grin Grin
