Colonization of Mars project is only targeting the first step and that is establishing a small base on mars wherein the selected astronauts will stay and will build a small colony. They will try to survive by planting kinds of vegetables and other plants in the area while expanding the territory. When all is set people can now go to mars and live there. The living environment is not suited for our physical condition but we are not living exposed to the atmosphere but in a closed space where oxygen can flow freely and the temperature is controlled.

In order to survive in space, the muscular and skeletal system must be suited to the living conditions there. Our lungs and our skin need oxygen. A limited life can be achieved with the current biological structure.
But if serious progress is made in the field of cybernetics, we can continue our existence in space with a different body structure. I know this is a bit utopian. But if we can all become mechanically viable, an extraterrestrial life is possible. To me, humanity will achieve this in the next several century.
The start of what you say will be found when research figures out ways to give people enough health that they can live for 200 years, on Earth, in top health. Then, if they can make people to live for 500 years, not only will there be the strength in people to survive colonizing another planet, but people will have to colonize, because of the population explosion following fewer deaths.
