It took 5 years for Japan to prepare for the Olympics, huge amount of funds have been invested into the preparation, if the Olympics is postponed or cancel it will bring severe economic problem to the country.

I am sure they will never cancel it but postponed it for the time being. They do not have any other choice.

What are your thoughts about the 2020 Olympics Games, should it be postponed or cancelled? This will be unprecedented, as the only time that the Games has been suspended is during wartime. But at peace time? we haven't seen it.

Abe insists Olympics to go ahead as planned despite Covid-19

Quote
Japan is still preparing to host the Olympics, Shinzo Abe has said, despite growing concern about the viability of the summer Games because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Japan’s prime minister and his government have been adamant that the Olympics will go ahead, even as other global sporting events have been put on hold. Speculation about a delay of the July start date has grown since Donald Trump said organisers should consider a one-year postponement.

Abe and Trump held a call after those comments, prompting the the US president to say on Twitter that the Olympic venue was magnificent. This may not, however, be enough to assuage the Games’ sponsors, who are increasingly nervous about the impact of the outbreak on the competition.

Should the games be postponed and wait till the covid-19 pandemic subsides, or proceed with it even though that there are risk involved for athletes, organizers and fans themselves?

The best option right now because the pandemic is not going down, is to set the Olympic next year, there's no guaranty that everything will be ok in July, and if they decide to push through I doubt countries will have the confidence to send their athletes, they need to clean the air of uncertainty, that no one will be infected, audiences and athletes.

@Yaunfitda in my personal opinion Japan should immediately suspend Olympic preparations, and while I do understand that such a move will have a huge impact on their economy, but it’s necessary as they’ll be able to safe countless human life’s which is more important than saving money.

@aioc I’ll second that as most of the country’s will refuse to send their delegation of Athletes, and that’ll harm the reputation of the Olympics so let’s hope it gets canceled or postponed.

^^ Definitely, there could be some athletes who might not feel comfortable in this Olympic games this year. But I'm sure that the Japanese government will do everything in their power to promote this games without hassle with or without the corona virus scare.

And we do hope that we can finally put an end to this crisis in the next months. So that not only the Olympics, but other sporting events happening around the globe will not have a negative impact because of the epidemic.

Just discover that on the official website they are updating a list of the latest news on the Games.

https://tokyo2020.org/en/news/

Anyway, I had read an article on the possible danges about the nuclear contamination after the Fukushima accident.

https://www.ilfattoquotidiano.it/2019/12/05/fukushima-greenpeace-alti-livelli-di-radioattivita-in-un-sito-che-ospitera-le-olimpiadi-2020-governo-avvii-subito-decontaminazione/5596950/

As you may know, the nuclear contamination can persist for centuries and the some events will be exactly on the contaminated area.

I would agree that this time, someone for the USA will bring back the glory of 100 meters to the Americans. Tyson Gay tried before, but Bolt is really a freak. So I expect the likes of Coleman, Gatlin though is not in his prime anymore. Yohan Blake could be good to compete with the Americans but then again like Gatlin his best runs are over. I read though that there are another young Jamaican following in Bolt's foot print, but we will have to see if he has what it takes to be the next Bolt.
I have not seen Tyson Gay competing this year but you cannot count out Justin Gatlin as he won the silver medal in the recently concluded World Championship and it is not a small thing, Gatlin is 37 years old and still he is still competing defying odds and considering Justin Gatlin and Christian Coleman are in good form US can regain the 100 x 4 m relay medal which was eluding us because of the Bolt and co and now the chance is here to regain.

I will assumed that Tyson Gay has somewhat retired because we haven't seen him for a while. Gatlin though if you could remember has been involved in doping before. And after he was exposed, his performance has somewhat diminished. So although he is still competing at high level specially his specially 100 meters, sooner or later the effects of the illegal drugs in his system might show up especially that he is almost 40 years of age.

It will be really interesting to see a post Usain Bolt era.

You just have to look at the previous Worlds Athletics and you will see who has the potential to replaced Bolt. And it seems USA are going to dominate it because they have solid runners like Gatlin, Coleman and Lyles. I haven't hear anyone from Jamaica except Blake but it seems that he is not competing at the level as he used to be. He just places 5th in the World Athletics behind the Americans, and third in the 2018 Commonwealth games.

Yeah, I know that feeling. Nowadays it's very difficult not to know result if you want to watch game later. You have to turn off TV, computer, ignore all social media. And in the end, your friends will spoil final result Cheesy
Yeah, but I think it will be worth it , if our country could gain gold from the olympics, the only thing that could be bad is when we are gonna bet on whos country will gonna win, for me I will sacrifice my sleep to gymanstics category since i know that asian countries are good in it  , especially that Yulo, who won the past sea games, will looking forward to him, I hope he will win, so that I could win in my bet too.

What makes me sad is not that I dont have time to watch, but the fact, that when I open any news webpage, listen to the radio while driving to work or simply standing in the queue, I will accidentally hear/notice the results...

I'm a hockey fan. I remember previous winter games - I've set home tv set to download the nationals team game. Guess what I heard when I turned on TV in the morning and there was news - "our team lost"... (there was even running subtitles claiming that we lost...). What is the reason to watch the game when you know the score... And that happened almost with every game (except final, I've set an alarm Smiley )

Yeah, it will be difficult to watch Olympics due to time zone difference. Rio 2016 also was similar, because most of events happened during night time. But there will never be time which would be good to watch in all continents.

It is US and Russia are the leading competitors in the Olympics.

Dont forget Norway and Germany for winter and Great Britain and China for summer. These countries usually get a lot of medals too.

Russia is still in the list. Are they still allowed to compete? Or the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) sanction will only take effect after this Tokyo Olympics? I am saddened to hear because Russians are one of the toughest competitors but it seems evidences are pretty solid leading into the decision to ban them in years.

oh really ? im not aware with that but what i thought is that china and japan are the leading competitors when it comes to the olympics  .

It is US and Russia are the leading competitors in the Olympics.

and what do you mean by anti doping ? sounds like drug related to me  .  but did they accused by taking drugs before  ?    . that is bad and every players are not permited to do that in every games because it can affect thier health and it can also affect other players safety  .

Obviously, it has something to do with illegal substance. They were caught cheating, they don't care about their health, as long as they going to win medals for their country. That's why government agencies has the full backing of some athletes to used steroids in Olympics specially Russia.

If you're talking about list in OP, it wasn't updated in recent months. Russia is banned and clean athletes from this country will be allowed to participate under neutral flag only.

You right, I forgot to remove them, for now I add a tag BANNED  till we have an official list and their situation will be clear.

It will be hard to watch Olympics for europeans due to time difference.
I remember winter 2018 Olympics in South Korea... Almost missed all the major event and faced a lot of spoilers in news and radio (before I even watched downloaded game or it was shown on tv).
