I'm just looking at that World Athletics Championships today because I'm sure the winner will be the favorites in the Summer 2020 Olympics. Specially in the 100 m and 200 m, so here are the results.

100 m:

Gold, Christian Coleman ( USA ), Silver, Justin Gatlin ( USA ), surprised that Gatlin is still very active and Bronze, Andre De Grasse ( CAN )

200 m:

Gold, Noah Lyles (USA), Silver Andre De Grasse ( CAN ) and Bronze goes to (Ecuador) Alex Quinonez

So remember those names as early as today because for sure the same guys are going to duke it out for the coveted medals in Tokyo next year again.

It is surprising that all these NBA stars want to participate in the Olympic games, after preferring the NBA games over the recently concluded FIBA World Cup. I don't have the opinion that the Olympic Basketball is not an important tournament. But should it be given more importance when compared to the World Cup? A total of 32 nations participated in the FIBA World Cup, while only a dozen may qualify for the Olympic tournament. Also, basketball is just one of the dozens of disciplines within the Olympic games. Anyway, it is good to see players such as Lebron, Durant and Curry representing the United States in an international competition. But I really missed them during the World Cup.

Time for some updates for Basketball.
After the shame during the last Mondial, The Team USA wants to show his supremacy on the next Summer Games.
The big news is that finally, the NBA stars will go there.

The 1st big name is Curry, he wants Tokyo! (and maybe Kevin Durant too)

Souce: https://eu.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/warriors/2019/09/18/nba-steph-curry-tokyo-2020-olympics-kevin-durant-departure-nets/2361233001/

If this will be confirmed well, this can be a safe bet  Grin

Olympic is much more prestigious than any World Cup, every player, athlete wants to win a gold medal, if the basketball team will have Curry then it will become a domino effect many top players in the league will come to play, they should avenge the US team-worst finish in the last world cup, like to see who will be included in the team.

@ene1980 - as far as the fastest man, Yohan Blake, fellow countryman of Bolt, could be the one to replace him. But I'm not sure if he has the personality to be the face of Olympics next year.
If Yohan Blake is continuing his prime form then he could be the sprint king but you cannot put a solid bet on him like we could with the legend once in a life time athlete like Usain Bolt, when he first competed in 2008 and saw him run in an Olympic final 100 m even though by slowing down in the final few meters and still break the record is an image stuck with everyone who watched the event and after that when ever he competed i wage a bet on him and won all the time but this time around it is not that easy.

We would forget that the smile he gave when finishing the 100 m?  Grin

Yohan has the tools and he is at the prime age so I wouldn't be surprise if he is the main favorite in the next summer Olympics and I haven't heard any names from the US team that can compete against Blake at this time. Again, if someone wants or need to be the face of the next Olympic, you need the charisma and personality like Usain Bolt.

It could be dominated by US and China but I'm sure the host country will send a lot of athletes and try to compete with those two nations.

I agree that's a bit too early to discuss about Olympics and I'm a bit afraid that this thread will be spammed. Maybe it would be better to start self moderated topic?
In Tokyo we will see some new sports like Basketbal 3x3, Baseball,  climbing, surfing, skateboarding. Personally for me most interesting events in Olympics is basketball, athletics and swimming.
As usual this time too the point tables will be dominated by China and USA. I don't understand why players from other countries weren't able to make records and get more medals.
Athletes from other countries win lot of medals and records, but it's normal that they can't compete equally with these giants. Same can be said about things like economics or something similar.

Well, I really think the government is doing something right now, and this particular problem is just one of a lot of problems the government are handling right now, and because there are newly elected government bodies that are assigned to the most specific problem, our government is most concern over top issue at the moment, but in my opinion our president is doing what he could to solve financial issues regarding the Olympic games right now.

You can not blame the Philippine basketball team for not doing well in the FIBA recently because there is some issue regarding that as well, I think they are doing what they could to give their all but the thing is there is a lot of misplayed shots and regarding their focus I guess it is too early for them to play on the big league, And the government should focus on every aspect of sports and not only on boxing and one game around they should focus on the talents and who has the skill to do it on all different aspects of sports it is the lack of opportunity for certain individuals to see their worth and I think that the problem for certain people to have opportunities because of the problem financially.

No offense, what I'm trying to say is private individuals, they should not focus solely on basketball. They could sponsor a few like Diaz or some boxers who can bring glory to the Philippines. You guys have a lot of talent in boxing, Pacquaio, Nonito etc.

Do private individuals not think of other sports? If they are willing to sponsor basketball teams and send them abroad why not other athletes? Just asking.

@rosezionjohn - sadly if politics even in sport exist in the Philippines.

No problem in my side this is your opinion in what you think might be the best thing to do solely in giving glory to the country, we sure want to do such things like that and with the Boxing league if you are seeing a big chance in this division it is not that easy to just snug the Gold because there are many qualified boxers here this is not the issue but the limit and rules on the said Olympics, on the recent Rio Olympics Manny Paquiao hope on winning the Gold for our country and submitted his qualifications and statistics on the said event, He was then rejected not because he is not qualified but because he is Overqualified for the said event, Olympics are limiting the players and be valid for amateur boxers only with only just 20 Professional fights, And Pacquiao back then has had a 64 fights as a professional, winning 57 of them with 38 coming by way of knockouts, And as of now he had 71 wins and Nonito Donaire in the other hand had now has 45 professional fights 45 wins and 5 losses.

Well, there might be some boxers here in the Philippines that had trained like Paquiao Or Donaire but I haven't seen one like them that can compete for the time being but let's just see, I am just an Spectator as well, And hopefully they can get a qualified one to compete in the Olympics.

This isn't that early to give updates on the Tokyo 2020. At least eleven months is required to discuss about the games that takes place for few weeks time. This thread is going to be very busy.

I wonder though why the Philippine government is not focusing on games that they can win gold?

Basketball? They should focus on boxing, looks like they have a history of good Olympic boxers.

I have nothing against their basketball team, but with the recent performance, that money spend by some private individuals should have gone to their locals who have a high chance of getting a medals like Diaz in weightlighting.

I know that this is controversial specially basketball loving country like the Philippines.
I do agree that more funds should be given to other sports where our delegates has a higher chance of winning medals. The dismal performance of our men's team in the recently concluded FIBA World Cup should be enough to suggest that it's quite pointless to put more funds into basketball. But then there is also politics in sports and let's not forget all these sponsors.

Thanks for the update, I think they are going to send a strong team in this year's Olympic specially how the US team manage themselves in the last FiBA, not even in the medal standings. And the schedule seems to fit NBA stars because that is off season.

And there could be other stars willing to represent US and try to prove that there are still a force in the world basketball scene.

Isn't a little bit early to start a thread like this?
Olympic game is an amazing sports event with a lot of bets, but what can be discussed at that point? There is still a long way to go for the athletes and for the teams till then...

I'm ok and agrees with OP to start a thread like this, this early, we must create hype on the coming Olympic and this section should have one active thread, this thread is complete and comprehensive I'm looking forward to OP to add more and other members to update the discussions.

Mascots for this time will Miraitowa & Someity and their Instagram profiles if you want to follow them, I'm pretty sure you can already buy them on their store!

So kawaii Cheesy! (Japanese of "cute"). I really appreciate how they put their anime culture in their mascot, look how pretty those eyes are Smiley. But what I'm really curious is about the whole story behind their mascot design, I wonder why it seems they are themed as racing flags? They are very awesome nonetheless.

I think Hidilyn Diaz also competing in the women's weightlifting category, she is one of our great hope to win our first Olympic gold medal
she is getting a lot of support which she really deserves, she gives a lot of honor, it's just ok that she asks for more support, which has become very controversy last year.
I really hope so because what I'm thinking right now is that she intended to refuse joining the Olympics because of her demand not being met. Well, if Philippines will only have a one entry then so be it at least there is someone out there who will raise our national flag.

Usually though, gymnastics, track and field and swimming are the all time favorites sports and usually the emerging winners could be the next face of this summer Olympics so let's see.

Yohan Blake could be the one replacing Bolt since they are both on track and field sports and the fastest out there. It may be too early to say who is the face of the next Olympics but the possibility is there since Blake is worthy for the same.

I am wondering who will be the face of Olympics this time, Usain Bolt was the start attraction in the last three games and he will be missed big time, we will never see another athlete like that and even i had a wish to see him compete live and never fulfilled that dream and never will which is sad. New events are added in this Olympics. Any fan favorites participating in this event, if so i would like to know.

One Year Out: What to Watch Ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics . Really hard to say which one has the potential to emerge as the face of the next Olympics. That link mentioned some names but I'm not familiar with them. I guess we really have to wait next years game. Maybe someone out of the ordinary, specially that we have new sporting events that is going to be introduce in Tokyo.
