I know I expect too much from Čorić, he'll probably never reach the heights I thought he was destined to (top 5 overall). But come on, losing to Mackenzie McDonald is a bit too much.

His next opponent would have been Lloyd Harris, he must stop throwing these kind of opportunities away. He's 24 already and has only one GS quarterfinal.

Nice win from Kyrgios and next round he will face Thiem. I am tempted to place a small bet on Kyrgios. It is a gamble as you never know with him but if he wants he can really beat everyone.

~snip
Wasn't able to see the match but Kokkinakis put up a great fight as it went all the way (5 sets). Next match of Tsitsipas is against Ymer.

Kyrgios win over Thiem would be a best for Novak, that he could hope for, yet although I think that Nick can do that, Thiem is in a good shape, and stable player now, so I cannot see that happened, did not saw quotes, is it tempting to put some money on Nick?

regarding Tsitsipas, he played average tennis, and Kokkinakis almost did not had any break chances, so it is was up to Tsitsipas, if he handled the break during set, than he took it, otherwise lost it in a tie-break, long match, but not that worth watching

Kyrgios had a big win in a five set match, he really fought hard in this match and now I hope he can continue this on and go far in the tournament. The big upset of the yesterday's matches was Wawrinka losing in five sets, as I said we would most likely see more big upsets during the tournament as a lot of players are not 100% match fit and I think he has shown with some of the top players losing early on against lower ranked and un-seeded players. We are seeing the same thing happen in the Women's draw with Kvitova losing.

Nice win from Kyrgios and next round he will face Thiem. I am tempted to place a small bet on Kyrgios. It is a gamble as you never know with him but if he wants he can really beat everyone. He is playing on home sole so maybe that helps to motivate him.

Too bad Wawrinka lost, I like seeing him play but chances that Wawrinka will win another grandslam has also become rather low.

I'm really looking forward to the match of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Thanasi Kokkinakis, I'm sure its going to be a great match. Its good to see Thanasi Kokkinakis back playing tennis again after being on the side lines for many years with injury.

Djokovic had first set lost today, against Tiafoe, does not mean much, but it was a bit harder than expected for him to win, and this could a good thing, since early troubles could make player motivation rise in the end, since everything finished good in the end

Thiem had an easy one, Wawrinka is already out, Raonic passed to play with Fucsovics, and Djokovic will wait for the winner from that match in fourth round, seems that till Thiem - Djokovic in semi-final, there will be no interesting outcomes in upper half

maybe Thiem could see some troubles with Nick, if he win today, that could an interesting match, I am not betting much on AO at the moment, it is simply not my time zone

Depends on which Nick turns up, we all like his style and talent but it doesnt always generate a win,
Thiem will be worried for sure.

Not too much mention of Medvedev and Rublev, they seem to be flying under the radar.
They should come through their 2nd round of matches against Carballes Baena and
Monteiro respectively.

Obviously after their win at the ATP cup Medvedev and Rublev are ones to watch.

We are off to a nice start mate. Tsitsipas looked very good and I think he is primed to make it far in the tournament this year and maybe go all the way and win it which we are hoping for of course as we have money on him to win the AO.

Roberto Bautista Agut was a surprise loss to me as he has been performing well but was knocked out by Radu Albot. Goffin was also knocked out by up coming Aussie Alexei Popyrin so a couple more surprises. I must say that watching the tennis with so few fans is still strange to me and even though the max allowed at the AO is 30,000 a day the numbers are way down at around 20,000. This virus has really scared a lot of people from big tournaments but hopefully as we get deep in the tournament more people come to watch the matches.

I am always disappointed when Goffin suffers a loss in the early rounds. He has talent and he is able to beat the top players such as Nadal, but for various reasons, he never seems to reach really far in big tournaments (max quarter final). Probably he will never win a grandslam.

I saw some highlights of Berrettini vs Anderson and was quite impressed by Berrettini. His next match is against Machac which he should be able to win in straight sets.

I will say this now, Goffin will never win a grand slam. He just isn't good enough to win a grand slam and with Nadal, Djokovic stil playing and some of the young talent moving up the ranks, I just can't see him winning one. He does play well in smaller tournaments but grand slams I think he just isn't on the level as these other top players.

Goffin has been playing very bad lately. He costed me money in previous tournament against Alcaraz or some similar dirt player so I knew I have to skip or play against him. I took Popyirin +1.5 in the end as the safer bet.

I also watched Berettini against Anderson and he really looked well, just bear in mind that Berettini often plays backhand slice. That slice is excellent and it will give problems to many players, especially tall ones like Anderson but it will not be a weapon against some other players like De Minaur or especially best ones like Djoko or Nadal. Then he is reduced just to big serve and forehand.

Yes I know, just saying in Sinners case he was after going the full distance in the previous tournament
and had more of a case to call trainers on and Shapo using his toilet breaks and trainer time
and then giving out to umpire because he didnt get a 3rd break.

I'm big fan of Sinner, good ethics on court.

Too bad Sinner lost, but these are the tricks that the more experienced players sometimes play. I don't like it, but you see it on a lot of sports (even on a lower level).

Tsitsipas just won very easily against Simon: 6-1, 6-2, 6-1. He seems to be in top shape, so hopefully he can go all the way!

Yeah, my boy Tsitsipas seems to be on a good start, but so as other rank players, but it feels good to see him at least winning in the first round.

Wanted to see how Zverev will do as well, and also we have Djokovic playing. They should win their respective match in straight sets.

Yes I understand these are "legal" tactics to disrupt the opponents rhythm, not very sporting.

Tsitsipas is definitely in good form and to win easily against Simon who is a good player.

Did anyone see the "new 17 year old" Carlos Alcaraz or Spain today? he had his first Grand Slam
win today and Rafa is very impressed with him.

Tsitsipas V Simon should be a great match up,

Another 5 setter today was Sinner V Shapovalov, I didnt see it but was supposed to be a
great match. Sinner lost 3-6 6-3 6-2 4-6 6-4 and played gallantly but I guess it was an
uphill battle for him after winning Great Ocean Road tournament after coming through
a tough semi-final.

Shapovalov had a 2 toilet breaks, trainer on and giving out to the ref, totally different to how
Jannik Sinner conducted himself.

Tsitsipas had been in real good form at the ATP cup, I think he's way better than Simon and should be a comfortable 3-0 win for him. In case of Shapo using breaks and trainer, it is in umpires hands to judge and decide if he's doing it to get an advantage or a genuine concern. Not much Sinner can do in that situation other than wait.

It was an interesting first day of the AO with a few big upsets on the Men's side and Women's side. Monfils was the big upset on the Men's side losing to un-seeded Ruusuvuori in a thrilling fifth set match.

I'm looking forward to tonight's match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Gilles Simon, it should be a great match and as I have a bet on Tsitsipas I hope he can get the job done and also I'll be watching him closely to see how he looks.
Not considering Monfils loosing as a surprise. I believe Ruusuvuori was also a favorite on all bookies with odds like 1.6 on him.

What bet do you have on Tsitsi? ML odds are very small I was thinking on taking 7.5 handicap on him. He should destroy Simon and look good while doing it  Grin

There were a few fifth set matches with some of the top players, I think it shows that they are building on their fitness after being in quarantine for a while. In the Women's draw we saw a huge upset with Kerber losing in straight sets and not even scoring a set point in the first set. The other upset was Riske losing in straight sets also, I think we'll see more upsets today as some players might not be up to match fitness.

The rules were known in advance and applied to everybody. Some players decided not to come as a result, giving better chances for others to win, are they complaining about that ?
In any case, millionaires complaining about some quarantine time in a luxury hotel isn't a good look !
On the one hand, the rules were known in advance, on the other hand, not all players ' interpretation of these rules coincides with the interpretation of the rules by the organizers. Also, do not forget that the tennis players who flew to Australia had three options for quarantine. The softest option for the TOP 3 men and women in Adelaide, the harder option for the rest of the tennis players, but with a training process, and the hardest option for those unfortunate people who were unlucky enough to fly on the same flight with COVID 19 patients. These unfortunate people spent the entire quarantine period in their room without training, some without basic exercise equipment and tennis balls, and some like a Kazakh tennis player in the room next to the mice in the room.

Personally I'm betting on Djokovic for this tournament.

The BBC in today's article gives a more interesting look at AO.
The most important question is whether this competition is fair and gives an equal chance to all tennis players, since as many as 72 tennis players were in very strict isolation for 14 days, locked in hotel rooms and without the possibility of proper training.
Controversial tennis player Kyrgios has made a very interesting comment on the current situation in Australia: "Everyone is really playing it by ear. Nobody really knows who is in form and who is not,".
In any case, this will be a very interesting and uncertain competition.

As Kyrgios said, the AO will be an interesting and uncertain game since it was hard to know who's player is in form or not but I expect the competition to give chance to some underdog player to forge ahead in their career and I also expect the competition to show us who's the smartest and who have genuine affection for the game.
Therefore, the competition will be fair to those that are well prepared and can make positive out of every situation.

This is why I decided to go with some value and placed a bet on Stefanos Tsitsipas to win the AO. I will not be betting during the AO as it could be risky for the first week until we see which players are in form.
I agreed with you concern the idea of not making any bet until it the end of the tournament (first round stage) first week in other to know the players that are in shape but making decision that Stefanos Tsitsipas will win the AO doesn't seem right if you truly put the players shape into consideration.
