Who you think will reach the semis and eventually win the AO24?
...

Well, even though it's the first GS of the year - pretty much the usual suspects.
In the men's draw it's between Alcaraz, Đoković, Sinner and Medvedev and in women's side Swiatek, Rybakina, Sabalenka and eventually Gauff.

I hope Sinner takes it, I've enjoyed his end of season performances.

We are still here!

2 from the picture board above are out, Wawrinka and Murray.

Wawrinka lost out to Mannarino in 5 sets, no tie breaks and got Bagled in the last.

Murray lost out to Etcheverry in 3 sets 3-6, 2-6 and 2-6. I know Murray has been discussed
here before but I really think this could/should be his last season.

on the womens side 7th seed Vondrousova was beaten by Yastremska in 2 easy sets
6-1 and 6-2.

Lets see how the rest of the round 1 matches pan out to look at round 2

Tennis discussion thread is barely active even though Australian Open has started. Where are the tennis fans at? Who you think will reach the semis and eventually win the AO24?

A record 21 grand slam champs are playing in the Australian Open this year.

Dino Prižmić, a Croatian 18-year old guy that reached the main draw through the qualifiers, played a terrific match against Đoković.
He lost 3-1, but other than in the 1st set actually held his own. He even had a break advantage in the middle of the 3rd set at 1-1 in sets.

He should be the next Croatian big tennis star, so keep an eye out. Today's performance should give him a lot of confidence.

Well, he was unable to win against Novak Djokovic but I think he had shown good signs. Tell me but of course, we all expected Djokovic to win this match. And that's exactly how it turned out to be.

But of course, it is probably going to be a great idea to keep an eye on the Croatian. He is really young and has a lot to improve and also has the time on his side. If he can stay healthy, he will definitely be a great tennis player in the future.

There seemed to be concern that Djokovic would lose in the first round seeing how difficult it was for him to get through the match and it took him four hours to finally advance to the second round. Dino Prižmić was very good and calm but mentality and experience again brought Djokovic as the winner in this difficult match.

Speaking about youngsters on tour, young Russian player Alina Korneeva defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain 4-6 6-3 6-2. Russian teen who is ranked 180 in WTA is just 16 years old.

Brenda Fruhvirtová is one of the young tennis players who also made it through to the second round but unfortunately, she will meet defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, and it looks like this will still be Sabalenka's match.

For the women's section in recent years, almost no one has managed to defend the title, it will be a question of whether Aryna Sabalenka will be able to win again or we will see a new champion, and Iga Swiatek still looks very impressive and if I'm not mistaken she hasn't been defeated since becoming champion in China Open last year

Yeah, I googled him before the match against Nole and I already knew it's not going to be an easy match for the Serb.  Grin

Very promising indeed, I mean how many 18yo boys are there on tour right now? In recent history, only Alcaraz was able to perform at this level.

Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka has swept off the court German Ella Seidel. The German only barely managed to escape a double bagel at 6:0, 5:0. Nice start for a AO champion.

Berrettini has pulled out of his AO match against Tsitsipas with an injury. Things continue
to be hard for Mateo, such a pity.

Earlier Sinner and Arnaldi have progressed.

Djokovic is playing now and has dropped a set against Prizmic and has been broken
now in the third set, he's gonna win and Djokovic' odds now are 1.25

On the womens side Wozniacki got a walkover against Linette

I'm also happy to see Leylah has progressed to the second round.

he is
very talented but tries to enjoy himself a bit more than others! Its enjoyable to watch.
Yes, watching him play is quite entertaining but it will be debatable if he plays against a player who doesn't like his behavior such as his underarm serve, like what if he met Kyrgios, a player who also likes to serve underarm.

The Australian Open will start tomorrow, Jannick Sinner will face van de Zandschulp I think this will still be easy for Sinner as well as Novak Djokovic vs Dino Prižmić young Croatian tennis player, and one match that will probably be quite close is Fabian Marozsan vs Marin Čilić maybe the match will go longer than three sets.

And in the women's section, Caroline Wozniacki will face Magda Linette. Linette is very likely to stop Wozniacki in the early rounds, but the problem that the Polish player often faces is inconsistent performances, such as when she lost in Adelaide and this may very well go three sets.

Thats an easy first round match for Djokovic and not too bad for Sinner.

There are a few difficult ones on both sides, Womens and Mens.

Garcia plays Osaka - thats also a tough draw for both

Tiafoe v Coric - another tough draw but Tiafoe is favourite @ 1.53 v 2.50

Mannarino v Wawrinka - that could be a tough match for both.

Berrettini v Tsitsipas - its going to be difficult for Mateo.

Results from Adelaide:

Winners are Ostapenko easily in 2 sets and Lehecka easily over 3 sets.

That are some interesting matches! Osake just came back so I think Garcia is the favorite to win it. Wawrinka, based on his experience should win it but can maybe go all the way, similar for Tsitsipas vs Berrettini. Will look at the odds to see if there are some value bets.

Ostapenko(WTA rank 12) vs Kasatkina(WTA rank 15) about to start. I don't think Kasatkina has a chance in this match, even though it doesn't show that the match is going to be one-sided, according to the odds. 1.53x on Ostapenko, I'd gladly take those odds on the former French Open Champ. Her power striking and aggressive playstyle could overwhelm Kasatkina, who's known to have dodgy and slow serves. Holding wouldn't be easy for Kasatkina, if Ostapenko finds her rhythm on the return of serves. Ostapenko has been consistent enough during her previous games while Kasatkina has been really lucky to get 2 walkovers in a row where she was supposed to play against Siegmund and Pegula, both had withdrawn due to injury concerns. Unless Ostapenko isn't fit and tired, should be a fairly easy 2 set win for her. 6-4, 7-5 is what I predict.

Last year was pretty bad for FAA. After a good start, he had a pretty miserable time from the end of March. At the end of October he finally won his first tournament. In Basel Switzerland he won the final against Hurkacz. But after that his time got worse again. Now he has played his first tournament this year. And it is still seem to be going badly. In Auckland he lost in 2 sets against Daniel Altmaier.
ATP Auckland this time was for unseeds because all the seed players had been eliminated and the one who made it to the final was T. Daniel vs Tabilo, T. Daniel beat Shelton in two sets and Tabilo beat Fils in two sets too, and FAA always displays performances that fluctuate but it could be because the competition at ATP is very tight because many good young players are emerging.

Korda v Lehecka - Odds 1.56 - 2.4 - i think Korda as favourite is right, a good price too.

Unfortunately Korda lost and this was quite an easy match for Lehecka, only a few moments Korda put up resistance so he had to go through several dueces but Lehecka managed to overcome his opponent well and reached the final.

Draper v Bublik - Odds 1.45 - 2.80 - I'm giving Bublik a good chance to win this and I'll take
those odds.
Bublik played quite well when he beat Musetti and it was a very close match, and against Draper it will be quite close in my opinion and as you said Bublik has a chance to win and even become champion in this tournament.

WTA Adelaide, Daria Kasatkina was lucky enough to be able to reach the final without having to play the last two matches. L. Siegemund, her opponent in the quarterfinals withdrew, as well as Jessica Pegula, her opponent in the semifinals withdrew, she is waiting for the ongoing Ostapenko vs Alexandrova match to compete in tomorrow's final.

Ah I had a small bet on Bublik but it wasnt to be. It was a close one but in the end he
couldnt do it. I parts of the match and thought Bublik had some fantastic shots, he is
very talented but tries to enjoy himself a bit more than others! Its enjoyable to watch.

Tomorrows final could go either way, Draper has been solid but Lehecka could be tricky
to beat, Draper is favourite though 1.58.

On the Womens side its Ostapenko v Kasatkina, its the 6th seed Ostapenko who is
favourite @ 1.58.

I won't be betting on men's final it's going to be a close match. Normally I'd say Draper but Lehecka has just been so good lately in Adelaide.

Ostapenko is easy money guys.

Ostapenko won it 6:2, 7:5, Alexandrova had no chance against the overwhelming blasts from the baseline by the Latvian. Ostapenko kind of lost momentum a bit in the second, but Alexandrova didn't use this opportunity to take it into the third set.

Final Ostapenko - Kasatkina, who was extremely lucky to advance without having to face Jessica Pegula.

I watched Bublik v Musetti yesterday, Musetti had very little tournament play recently so he failed to convert his match point missing a sure winner opportunity at the net.

Draper has it all to dispatch Bublik in two easy sets.

First of all, I thought Jack Draper should not have been able to win the semi-final match against Bublik. I knew it was going to be a close match but I thought that the result was going to be different. Actually, it was not even close in the end. Draper was able to win the match quite easily. I expected better from Bublik.

In the final match, he is going to play against Lehecka. I hope this match is not going to be one-sided. I don't think it will, but you never know. I didn't expect the semi-final match to be one-sided, but it kind of was. So I will say this match can be won by anyone. And this time I won't pick any favorites.

WTA Adelaide:

Ostapenko somewhat unexpectedly defeated Caroline Garcia 6:4, 5:7, 6:4. Sad to see a top player leave at such an early stage. Latvian will be playing Marta Kostyuk in the next round.

Kasatkina v Kalinskaya just ended, and I was watching this match. Kasatkina won in three sets 5:7, 6:4, 7:5. Kalinskaya was obviously not feeling well, she had her blood pressure measured on court and she also complained about her right hip area. Too many unforced errors from her today, but she had good chances to win. Unfortunately for her, Kasatkina's defensive play was more consistent today.

also Pegula is there in the first quarter final tomorrow against Pavlyuchenkova,
one to watch out for too

Over on the mens side the top 4 seeded players have made it to the quarter finals:

Paul
Jarry
Korda
Musetti

Also Bublik is there too, I would like to see him doing good things this year, He plays
Musetti tomorrow, odds are Musetti 1.95 - 1.89 Bublik, interesting match!

Paul plays Draper tomorrow too in another close one according to odds 1.68 v 2.22

Update on todays mens matches at Adelaide

Jack draper got the job done against Paul in 2 sets and easily enough 1-6 and 4-6.

and Bublik beat Musetti in 3 close sets, thats promising from Bublik.

The semi finals are:

Korda v Lehecka - Odds 1.56 - 2.4 - i think Korda as favourite is right, a good price too.

Draper v Bublik - Odds 1.45 - 2.80 - I'm giving Bublik a good chance to win this and I'll take

Yes, and that loss was also in the round of 16. It was definitely not very good and people surely expected better from him.

On the 14th of January, he will be playing in the Australian Open and the match is relatively easy for him. I believe he is going to win that match without any problem. But I am not sure how his overall performance is going to be in the Australian Open. I will say currently the performance is not very good. So I am not very hopeful about him in the Australian Open to be very honest. But I hope the best for him.

His first match at the Australian Open is against Thiem. Yes, actually an relative easy match for him. But if you look at his current performance and the bad year 2023, I would say that no match will be easy for him.
Last year he has reached the last 16 at the Australian Open and his performance got worse afterwards. It seems he has been in a crisis for some time and hopefully get out of it soon.
