SO here we are with the next gen finals final!

Medjedovic v Fils

Two guys who have been on the ATP tour now for over a year. Medjedovic in particular
has the backing of fellow countryman Djokovic. He hasnt done too much in 2023 does
reaching this final tomorrow act a s a launch pad for him in 2024 I wonder?

Fils is a higher ranked player on the ATP and so is favourite for tomorrow @ 1.56, the
Serbian is 2.45, thats close enough really, there could very well be an upset...

My bet will be on the Frenchman, but I have to say that Next Gen is not particularly exciting this year. I'm not sure why, perhaps the overall level of tennis is dropping? Just take a look at previous finalists: Sinner, Rublev, Tsitsipas, Zverev, De Minaur, Alcaraz, Korda, Nakashima, Lehecka...

Stricker play Fils now.

Its very open ATM in the two groups, If Fils wins today he is through to the semi finals,
if Stricker wins it leaves the group open. Fils is favourite @ 1.30

The two Italians Nardi and Cobolli are relying on Stricker to win today, their fate is out of
their hands.

van Assche v Michelsen later, van Assche should be winning that and is favourite @ 1.41
Shelbayh v Medjedovic after that and Medjedovic is favourite @ 1.41

Yep, I like some of the rules - especially the serve pauses.
Having shorter sets does nothing for the excitement though - just makes it more messy. I hope it won't ever be implemented.

The same thing happened with the doubles - the 3rd set instant tiebreak. Did nothing for the popularity, just made it weirder.

Most players don't like doubles. Many top players don't play doubles at all. It also adds headache to the tournament organizers as they need extra time, courts etc... so yeah as a tennis parent I fully agree 3rd set tie-break is better. Players wake up at 5 or 6am go to the practice courts, then wait for the singles match and after that when you're exhausted already and would like to get ready for the next round's singles match, you have to wait for your doubles match and play possibly till 10-11pm.

I like some of the new rules and would like to see these introduced to all tournaments,

No warm up on court - I just dont understand the idea of having a 1 minute warm up
just after the players have already warmed up inside.

8 second shot clock between 1st and 2nd serve - another good idea, the player is already
in position, has his 2nd serve ball ready, just do it.

These two just speed up the game which can only be a good thing for spectators.

As regards the scoring change with shorter sets and then the match over 4 sets is different.

I have just had a closer look at the Next Generation ATP Finals. The first thing that immediately catch my eyes was that a set only goes to four and is finihed therefore sometimes after only 15 minutes. However, tie-breaks can sometimes take longer.
In general, there are some special rules that have been introduced especially for this tournament. For example, a separate towel rack for the players. This tournament seems like
a test balloon for new rules.

Yeah, it's not the first time Next Gen tournaments are introducing something new. Short sets, no on-court warmup, lower umpire chair, 8 seconds shot clock between 1st and 2nd serve, I guess also first match without linesmen was played during a next gen tournament, and I also think they are using no-ad and no-let (like in junior tournaments) rules.

On Sinner, this was definitely his best year and hopefully he can make another step
forward in performance, maybe enough to take a grand slam? What is everyones
expectations of this?

this is just matter of time. in my opinion... he has all characteristics that a top tennis player need to have.
bear in mind, Sinner was a perfect unknown player 5 years ago... now he is a top 10 player....
If he continue with that pace he can achieve a lot of success.

Italian players have been hosted in a lot of Italian TV programs (obviously online connection...)
https://video.corriere.it/sport/pietrangeli-non-mi-sembra-carino-declinare-invito-mattarella-io-ci-vado/05ebd67e-8d41-11ee-b4a7-347e05f6b33b
Meanwhile Nicola Pietrangeli continue to criticize the whole team ( Roll Eyes ) this time because Italian players decide to go on holiday and "refused" to meet Italian President of Repubblic (Mattarella) .
I don't think this is a good way to support a team/players, but they probably don't need useless praise Wink

What I like about him is that he is able to keep his emotions under control which
means he isnt shouting out loud after he wins of loses a point. This also is good
to keep his opponents in the dark as regards how he is feeling mentally or regards
fitness.

I also like how he is building his performances from year to year. His management team
are doing a fantastic job and they obviously have a process and realistic goals they
want to achieve, being now #4 they have to be thinking grand slams for 2024...

Aaaaand it's an easy win for team Italy: 2:0 over Australia as predicted by many. Arnaldi defeated Popyrin in the first match and Sinner dismissed de Minaur 6:3, 6:0 in the second. Congrats team Italy!
Yes Jannik Sinner beat Alex de Minaur with score of 6-3, 6-0 for landslide victory 2 - 0.
From this victory, Sinner also managed to take home the 2023 Davis Cup (Davis Cup) and the match against De Minaur looked very interesting because Sinner appeared aggressive which meant that De Minaur couldn't do much to keep up with Sinner.
This 2023 (Davis Cup) victory also gave Sinner satisfaction because he also beat Djokovic, who previously made him unable to compete at the ATP.

Previously, Italy was also almost eliminated from the competition, but thanks to Sinner who defeated Djokovic, he was able to save Italy in the 2023 (Davis Cup) competition.

Yup, and after 47 years they have had a long wait. TBH I thought it might have gone to
a doubles decider but it was a fairly convincing 2 match win. Well done to team Italy,
I'll bet bitbollo is delighted!

TBH eventhough there is little to play for its still a prestigious event for the players, in
what is an individual sport, to be able to play as a team brings a new dimension and a great
way to end the year.

Looking at the players, Italy has indeed the best chance to win but there is no real value in it, the odd for Italy to win is too low for me. I think the end result will be 2-1 for Italy with Sinner winning his singles match and than together with Sonego, he also has a high chance of winning the double match.

Yep, Italy won but this is "only" and historical cup.

I don't like this cup because there is not real value in winning it, but whaterver always a win.

No not much value in it.

ahahhaha yeah it's an awesome moment for all Italians Wink
the last david cup wins by Italy team was achieved on 1976 so this is a great result.
It's nice also to see that a lot of people have interest in this sport and are not talking only about football!

Funny video below.

Pietrangeli was the captain of Italian team on 1976. He declared several times comments "against" Sinner, probably the worst
"he need 2 lifes to achieve mine success"... Sinner's face is the best answer Wink

OMG, that is super arrogant by Nicola Pietrangeli, what he said was totally not what
Jannik Sinner would ever say. I can see why Jannik had that cold dark stare for Nicola.

Its brilliant, another Sinner win against Djokovic to bring the draw to a doubles match,
where technically Sinner beat Djokovic for the 3rd time!

Its Australia v Italy in the final now. You would have to fancy Italy to take the title.
Looking at the team sheet Italy have stronger players but if the match comes down to
a doubles decider I think it could go either way.

The odds are Australia 3.0 - 1.39 Italy

I feel it's going to be Italy in the final. Đoković is a favorite against Sinner but Musetti should be beating Kecmanović.
Doubles are where I think it will be settled, and although Đoković is playing I do feel the advantage is with Bolelli/Sonego.

Whoever wins here should be a favorite against the Australians.
Sinner have won the match in style. In less than a week after the loss to Djokovic in the Nitto ATP finals Sinner have won the match 6-2 2-6 7-5. In the other match Kecmanovic have beaten Musetti 6-7(7) 6-2 6-1. Sinner teaming with Sonego and defeated Djokovic and Kecmanovic pair in the doubles in the direct set 6-3 6-4. A big win and Italy into its first Davis Cup final since 1998, which is 25 years gap.

Sinner has beaten Đoković again, 2 times in the last 3 games.

I think it has never happened for Đoković losing 2 times against the same player is a such short period of time!

Can he go for big slams in 2024?

Didn’t see Djokovic losing to be honest, but congrats to Sinner. Will be an interesting year to watch the grand slams, as Djokovic will not be the only big favorite to win the titles (Alcaraz, Sinner, …). I still see Djokovic winning at least 1 grand slam but doubt he would win 3 or 4.
