This huge amount, at current cost. If I just lost wallet.dat after every increase in the cost bitcoin, I would go crazy again and again...
This is bad lose no doubt but I think he must did some kind of mistake I mean maybe he did not wait for long time and sold bitcoin at low price. Now several scammers are also scamming and this way they use to take all bitcoin form people. If you get to bitcoin at very first try to secure your bitcoin then think about saving it for long time. It is huge lose and will take a lot of time to be recovers again.

It's mainly due to the reason that Bitcoin was not famous at that time and it's price was also very low at that time. No one knew that bitcoin price would reach such a high price in future. So most of the early birds just saved their bitcoins carelessly. Otherwise this incident would have not happened.Nowadays,we check even more than three to five times the receiver's address before sending our bitcoins as a single wrong click would end in loss. It was because he is very reckless. We all know that a big amount of bitcoin should be stored in cold storages to ensure that your profits will be kept safe. Even $1000 was too big for 103 bitcoins to achieve to. Price for bitcoins has raised much more above in last some years and until 2011 it was unknown to many of us.
There are several cases like such even my friend used to do mining back on those days and he also had lot of bitcoins with him.He even used to give away free bitcoins as it did not have much value as of now.He has still 150 btc stuck on his old computer as he saved the private keys on his old system which got spoiled and ended up loosing 150BTC on cold storage it is still stuck for him aswell.
Unbelievable! Damn! That is a lot of money. It is clearly obvious that he did not believe that bitcoin would skyrocket to such a high value which is most probably the reason why he never thought of securing it properly in the first place. Losing such a huge stack of money would hit me hard and almost anyone no matter how rich they are, but this clearly demonstrates the importance of securing our assets for the future. I advice everyone to secure all their assets(bitcoin and altcoins) since they could potentially make you rich if you secured them in the right manner through hardware wallets or paper wallets etc. Do not leave your money on exchanges and don't depend on online wallets.
All these actually serves to remind us that we must be careful with our wallets and make sure our backup works!

Loosing 103 Bitcoins is nothing compared to what this guy lost has lost 7500 Bitcoins He threw away his hardrive

103 bitcoin is funtastic value, you hold it almost for 7 years and you lost it.. I can't imagine if I am in that situation, may be I will depression.. from the that problem we can learn to be more careful and always backup everything all about bitcoin and your wallet.
this is the way that we have to be more careful specially with our wallets for , that 103 bitcoin are too much and this is more so disgusting for you if you may lost all of it a lot of regret may happen and you the way on how you may able to set your mind are too difficult a lot of depression you may encounter for.
I've heard a similar story from a few people...talked to a guy at a local crypto meet-up that had a friend with hundreds of bitcoins left in a wallet on a laptop which he lost the data for...lesson learned to save passwords and backup wallets...

Unfortunate for him to lose that big amount. Maybe his very depressed right now all his effort was all gone too sad for him. Maybe someone hacked his account. This will be a lesson for us miners right now.
Must be kicking himself in the balls right about now.

It is like one piece treasure haha, it is sad because I know it is most likely impossible to brute force hack any online wallet so it is very hard to access those bitcoins. I wish they would make a feature on the wallet that would send its users verification and an authentication message set whenever they couldn't access their wallet for a couple of years and if that wallet is not accessed or confirmed by its owner then maybe it can be returned to the system to be mined again.
Hope it will find his bitcoin wallet.dat file, because it is huge loss, now when BTC price and value is on steady rise in prise and the price can be only bigger.
