and here i thought the whole thing about bitcoins was that it is near impossible to steal them. at least thats what i heard before i started mining.
You can't steal someone elses BitCoins. In my understanding when coins are sent, they are encrypted to a public key, and only the person with the private key can then make use of them (or "vouch" for them being sent elsewhere). It's a beautiful application of public/private key cryptography.
The only person with the private keys to your coins is you.......or anyone with your wallet.dat file. This is why wallet encryption is so important.

I had my wallet stolen by my own foolishness a few months ago. It was only a couple bitcoins, but I learned not to click on exe's I don't trust

So, here's my thought on the subject.
If Bitcoins are a set of digital Alpha/numerric characters for each Bitcoin, then each REAL transaction should add the sellers 'input' characters to the code that verify that the seller ACTUALLY sold them to a Specific buyer, who know has them in his Account/s. They need to be traceable, that way.
So, stealing them would not add any verifiable characters to each Bitcoin, which should render them worthless to the thief, but still holding their value for the owner they were 'stolen' from.
IF he was SMART enough to keep them backed-up, then he'd still have his version of the digital docs, that have his code attached to them,

How would this affect the trace-ability of the coins?
How do hackers know you have a wallet if you computer is behind a router?

Related thread, doesn't steal wallets (because people are starting to encrypt them, so it's getting harder) but swaps bad addresses for good ones.
