@mgoz
If you have the skills, you can swap the boards from a good unit to help with the troubleshooting. Presuming of course that this is first approved by Canaan.

And then when you have figured out which board or other component is faulty, you can request Canaan sending you a new spare part.

I haven't opened it up because I don't want to do anything that may void warranty. Only spare fans I have are from Avalon 6 units and rated lower RPM. Suppose I could try swapping between 841 units if Canaan approves. I really don't think it's the fan. Maybe a bad MM or PMU board. Have only had the left PMU board LEDs go red once and the other side continued to hash. Haven't been able to reproduce.

Does installing a new fan have any effect on the issue?

Still dealing with an unstable 841 and no resolution from Canaan support for 4 weeks. Any suggestions on what the issue may be? Differences I have noticed:

1) Voltage input on trouble unit is 11.7-11.9V, regardless of PSU. All other units are at 12V+
2) Fan speed on trouble unit seems out of spec. It reports running at 5820RPM/82%, while others show 5790RPM/100%. Somehow it's reporting faster RPM with lower fan control value.

I suspect fan may be shutting off and then causing it to overheat, but have not been able to catch it during a crash. Last two times it has crashed, there are no LEDs lit on PMU or MM boards. Just looks to be entirely off and removes itself from cgminer, so there's nothing in log either. Cycle PSU and it will run fine until crashing again, which is typically 1-3 days.

Evil beware: We have waffles!
@ Mgoz in reply to his issue (miner shutting down) which is very OT in https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/--3605989 AFAIK the fan should NEVER hit zero speed. Even at idle min should be 10% or around 560rpm.

The fact it reports 100% speed (command) and 0 rpm (feedback) makes my guess as either a flaky fan or the control board has an intermittent fault in the fan speed control area. Make sure both the fan connectors are seated and no wire is loose. If like the 721's there is a connector on the control board with wires running to a 2nd connector in the fan shroud area.

Hello Matti,
I want to ask you something.
One of my Avalon 741 fan was dead so I changed it with a new one.I put it into work and it works fine and cools the miner but at cg miner status is says only the percentage but the RMP is 0.

PG value describes the power supply condition.

Which psus are you using? Sorcerer psus? Do you have better luck with other psu?

I am using Sorcerer PSUS, switching units does not have a change. The PG started going down when exhaust temps went really high, I saw over 155 on the exhaust before it stopped hashing. I am running March firmware too which is suppose to have the updated thermal protection.

So is it the last miner on the chain?

If so I would suspect cables.

But if it is one of the miners in the middle of the chain I would need to think about it.

What is the power brick 5 volts 2.5 amps

Or 5.1 volts 2.5 amps.

The official rasp pi brick used in the cana kit is 5.1 volts and 2.5 amps

one is middle of chain, i have another one acting similarly which is first in chain. I was able to watch one fail first hand, not sure if it is root problem or a symptom but the fan RPM went to 0, it continued hashing ( i am surprised it would still do this), exhaust temps continued to rise, PG start going down (I assume it was pulling power to reduce hash to in turn reduce heat), than the unit fails, after that it will start popping in and out of CGMiner until a physical power reboot. Weird thing is the fan runs fine after the reboot, makes me think maybe there is an issue with the module. I am surprised the unit doesn't instantly stop when the fan goes to 0. Still waiting on resolution from Canaan support.

edit - just to add, they say there is less than 1% failure rate with these units, I have been having issues with 3 so I must be extremely unlucky. My other ones have been running great however.

Under the listing it shows,"+5.1V 2.5A output" I haven't confirmed it my self

Yeah, that piece of code shows that both PMU boards are perfectly ok.

Hmmm, weird and interesting..

Check out your Vo values.

It seems that you could have issues with the PMU boards.

I appreciate the help, the interesting thing is after a power cycle things look ok until it fails again which is typically withing 1-3 days.

Electrical engineer. Mining since 2014.
Check out your Vo values.

It seems that you could have issues with the PMU boards.

Thanks, another just dropped too. No word from Canaan yet, if anyone has seen this before please let me know. If I physically power cycle it will start mining again, sometimes for days before dropping out of CGMiner.

Electrical engineer. Mining since 2014.
That information only tells me that all four hash boards have entered to a fault mode.

Miner is in the fault mode.

Sorry but I can't figure out the exact reason with this information.

Hello,

Any idea why a 841 miner or two may drop out out from CGMiner after X amount of hours. This has been randomly happening. After it drops it will continuously drop in and out from cgminer with a primary red LED light and 0 for hash, PG and rpm. Logs show

ECHU[1 1 1 1]
ECMM[197]

However a physical power reboot brings the device back up and running with no errors in log once it is up and running. I have tried reducing the string size per AUC to 4, and only running 3 AUCs per controller for a total of 12 units. I thought that worked as the environment has been stable for its longest period of time but one just dropped on me this morning. Sometimes it is not the same miner and it can be from a different string. I have a case open with Canaan but wanted to check here as well.
