Well, the first UEFA Champions League 2023/2024 matchday has just ended. There was a lot of exciting drama, a shower of goals, surprises, even a saving goal from a goalkeeper on this first matchday.

One thing that stands out is Arsenal's 4-0 victory over PSV and Barcelona's 5-0 victory over Royal Antwerp. There was also a rain of goals in the Bayern Munich vs Man United match which was marked by a blunder by the MU goalkeeper, Onana. Finally, many voices emerged, was it right to buy Onana??

I think it was the wrong decision to bring Onana to Old Trafford and even though in the end his performance was not as expected, Erik ten Hag also has to take full responsibility for the series of defeats suffered by Manchester United. Onana was only good at Inter last season and at Manchester United he has been the source of endless problems so far.

It is very regrettable why David De Gea had to leave Manchester United, even though his performance last season was very stable as the main goalkeeper. There isn't even the slightest good intention from Erik ten Hag or management to keep him. If we look at the statistics of David De Gea vs Onana in the early season match with Manchester United, there we know that Manchester United made a mistake by releasing David De Gea.
De Gea will certainly be a name that will be mentioned again after Onana's unsatisfactory performance since arriving this season. Previously it was also heard that many said this signing was too hasty and at the end De Gea had to leave with his performance still stable last season. And I think this will be a long conversation, and one of them will also bring Erik Ten Hag's name, because he is one of the people who played a role in the purchase of this one player. Not only that, now many are also questioning Erik Ten Hag's ability, because Manchester United's appearance has never been consistent. Indeed, he was able to bring Manchester United back to the Champions League last season, but of course it will not make satisfied.

Anything about PSG is still remain unsafe until PSG would able to create huge point gaps to the competitors. There are still some clubs like newcastle and acmilan that would be the main threats for PSG.
It's caused by milan and newcastle potentially to finish at the first and second place. This is just the first match day. There will be more to come soon. PSG needs to well prepared to face acmilan and newcastle caused by these clubs are far strongers compared with dortmnud at this moment.
Psg may also lose points when the club was facing those clubs. I hope that if enrique would have learned a lot from the previous match.

I agree with you, all teams have just played one match of course we can't conclude who is better and we have to wait until the 3-4 match
PSG indeed started with a good start but it was a home match to prove that they are one of the best, they must be able to win away games

To be honest, at first I doubted PSG too in this group phase, because PSG's poor performance in Ligue 1 made me doubt about PSG here. But yes, at least after PSG managed to win over Dortmund with a score of 2-0, then it seems that for now I predict PSG still has a great chance to be able to win the group. But yes, maybe only limited to the group phase because after all, I'm still not sure PSG will go further in the knockout phase later.

It's not a valid comparison. I think that you can also see another aspects like who was the defender during de gea's era. Manchester united has horrible defenders since last year. I don't even think that's a sense comparison between both of goal keepers.
The defenders were also affecting how good the performances from goal keeper as well. Solid defenders meant the goal keeper will get less threat from its opponent.
This is why we must also compare the defenders during that time compared with this time. We will get a valid answer about which is good or bad between either of goal keepers.

The first game of the champions league is one of my favourites because there is so much drama on the field, especially between Bayern Munich and Manchester United. The game was very difficult because Manchester United tried their hardest to score back goals, but the score ended 4-3. Manchester United really tried, and I think that if the team keeps playing that way, their performance will look good. However, the coach and the goalkeeper are currently the team's two biggest problems. According to my views, the coach might be acting this way in the squad because he doesn't want the team to win any trophies this year.

And regarding Arsenal and Barcelona defeating a team, it is nothing new because I am aware that both teams are capable of doing so due to the quality of their players. However, I want to reiterate that we cannot predict the team that will win the league right now because some teams may start the season well before their performance declines. Therefore, at this time, I am unable to predict any team that will win the champion league because they are still on the group stage of the league.

I would say that this picture does not show the whole difference. Onana plays in the team that Ten Hag has been leading for the second year now, and one can assume that this is a “formed” team. Last year, De Gea started in an incomprehensible crisis team (without Casemiro and other reinforcements) and sometimes United simply scored points at the expense of De Gea. So far, the same cannot be said about Onana; he doesn’t make a difference.

Onana is a typical modern goalkeeper. But his abilities don't seem to match the composition of other players at Manchester United. Moreover, Onana ball distribution ability at Manchester United was not the same as when he played at Inter.

However, it can't be helped, Ten Hag wants a different style of play. Although there is a risk that Onana task will become more difficult. Apart from being required to be good at distribution, with annoying defenders, Onana is also required to be good at saving. But I am optimistic that Onana will get up and correct his mistakes, especially since this is only his first season at Manchester United and he needs time to show his best qualities to Manchester United.
Onana is a build-up goalkeeper and it is not wrong if Erik Ten Hag wants him in the Manchester United squad. But sometimes if he keeps making mistakes over and over again he will definitely continue to be booed by the fans. In fact, we can see that even though Harry Maguire rarely starts, problems will still persist because of Onana's failure to anticipate as goalkeeper for the Red Devils. Even so, it was not purely Onana's fault, other players such as Martinez and Lindelof had to have their performance evaluated by Erik Ten Hag because these two players seemed to have failed to anticipate the ball coming from the opponent. Indeed, we can only hope that this problem does not continue and that Onana can prove its quality over time.
Andre Onana style building up play from the back didn't start in his time at Manchester United. He was doing same at Ajax before moving to Inter Milan where he continued with his style which I think was one of the reasons that attracted Manchester United to sign him.
That being said, I think he sometimes goes too extreme with his build up play and most attackers now know that he doesn't like to pull out the ball even when he's under pressure from opposing players. Telling him to totally stop his style of football isn't gonna be a good idea but I think the manager can do better by making him to adjust.

Talking about time for onana to give Manchester united his best, I don't think Manchester united have that luxury of time as the team is currently in bad shape enough to start giving so much time to anyone before they can be at their best. Onana has some good qualities tho especially with distribution as stated by you and that I will agree with you very strongly.

The team needs him to do more saves, possibly get more clean sheets, it's sad he came at the time the team is not in their best form as they are faced by some crisis recently, so it will make things worse if he give out too poor a performance and excusing him with him needing more time, I mean dose he need the whole season to set things straight and be at his best??

Manchester united expects more than what he is doing now from him so he should brace up and be at his best as he doesn't have that much time again to prove himself, I know his defenders are annoying and are not really helping but he should do his part and let the obvious be on the defenders so he doesn't have to take all the blame all the time.

I would say Newcastle and PSG played very well in the first match. Milan is one of the strongest teams in this group. Newcastle scored 1 point in the away match against Milan. The Newcastle team played well despite being inexperienced in the Champions League.
This is incorrect; it was an embarrassing performance by Newcastle United in the champions league as they did not attempt to even attack for majority of the moments in the tie; they camped in a tight low block and were only lucky to go home with a point because AC Milan were wasteful in front of goal with main culprit Raphael Leao.
Did you mean get 1 point from playing away against acmilan is unacceptable thing? Didn't you even imagine how big the pressures received by newcastle during the game? Newcastle is just playing UCL again after more than 1 decade was off from UCL.
You're too harsh for newcastle. Newcastle needs also to adapt with the situation of the league. The better thing to get draw away rather than lose. 1 point was also very important for the club.

I agree with you. Firstly getting 1 point in an away match can be considered as a good result in Champions League. And Newcastle managed to gain 1 point. Secondly I would say after a long time the team is playing on a big platform like Champions League. Players are more excited and at the same time they are under pressure. It is much more difficult to perform well against a big team like Milan. Newcastle team managed to stop Milan. If Newcastle can somehow qualify for the knockout rounds, it will be a huge achievement for them. But my guess is Newcastle will finish third in the table. And will play in this season's Europa League.

Onana may be said to be playing well with Inter Milan in the Italian league, but not in the EPL, therefore not all players who have just moved can be equally great because of course the way they play is also not the same, I can't say that he needs time to adapt, it should be for him. A good goalkeeper only needs a few matches to adapt enough, but this didn't happen for Onana, especially against Munich yesterday. perhaps it was a game that really disappointed the fans.

I'm not a loyal supporter of Manchester United, but apart from Onana, I think a lot needs to be overhauled in their squad, including the coach. I don't know. I think Manchester United has a lot to change to be even better. Seeing the series of defeats has made a lot of people talk about them lately. .
This is not only the fault of the goalkeeper, if the team concedes a lot, it also indicates a poor defensive performance. But to be objective, Onana makes a lot of mistakes that a professional should not make, even the match against Bayern in the Champions League, the first goal, it was the goalkeeper’s fault, a very big mistake that should not have been made in such a tournament.

How Ten Hag will get out of this situation is not clear, he currently does not have a better goalkeeper, and if they hope that Onana will simply start playing better, which means leaving everything as it is so that the situation resolves itself.

The problem is that Onana's form isn't what it was last season and I have to say he's had a dip in form since signing for the Red Devils. Actually from the beginning there were many discordant voices pointing to Onana's performance and maybe I was the one who supported Onana. But after a few appearances, I honestly began to doubt and even I began to think this was the wrong signing from Manchester United. Instead, I think if De Gea was still here it would be a different story. Don't push yourself to see something big from newcastle. Being able to qualify for the play off stage is already a big thing for newcastle.
PSG will face newcastle at st james park. It's a golden moment for gordon and friends to steal points from PSG.

The Red Devils have experienced flop season in the early EPL campaign, I hoped they do bounce back to actions when there's still time. André Onana was doing exceptionally brilliant with the Nerazzurri but I'm still a hugh surprise to watch him decline in performance after signing for the new elite EPL side. Manchester United is probably not in good shape, the same exact things points out to the players and Onana is also not an exception. Erik Ten Hag did actually made few wrong signings this summer, with the likes of Mason Mount, which I consider to unnecessary and also Onana who can never replace or fit in the shoes of David de Gea.

I'm afraid Onana is really a wrong choice for Manchester United at the moment. I wasn't expecting him to perform like this when he first came here honestly. Because you must all know how he performed for Inter last season. He increased his market value quite high after that performance. This improved the expectations from him when he arrived at Manchester United.

However he is still making simple mistakes. The first goal he conceded last night was really embarrassing. A goalkeeper at this level shouldn't make this kind of a mistake. I think Onana won't last too long in the starting eleven if he continues like this.
Of course, such mistakes are never expected from a goalkeeper like him but he is human so he has to take this mistake naturally because mistakes are human. Maybe we can now think that if he had not made such mistakes in the beginning, maybe Manchester United could have gone ahead in this match or Manchester United could have left the field with a draw. If we are Manchester United supporters, we should be satisfied with the way Manchester United performed. The small mistakes that Manchester United made against Bayern Munich certainly cannot be made in the next match. We need to learn from the mistakes of the match against Bayern Munich and replace those mistakes in the next match. Manchester United will be back again and strong in the next Champions League match.

A draw while playing away is a good achievement almost all teams are targeting these results if in the end they win it is a bonus or luck
Their target is to get full points when playing at home we know there are many advantages when playing at home.
Let's see what Newcastle can do when PSG challenges them obviously this is not an easy match.

I don't think like you. The Newcastle team is a completely new team on the Champions League platform. On the other hand, the Milan team is very experienced. Milan played in the semi-finals last season. It is very difficult to perform well against such a team. Newcastle were aiming to share the points in the away match against Milan. And they did it. Newcastle did not play in this match aiming to win. It is not to be expected that a team as inexperienced and new as Newcastle will do anything great in their first season. Newcastle played to get 1 point in this match, and they got it.

Is it a plan to give the magpies boys confidence ahead of next champions league group game? or its just poor Newcastle united? we will find out in champions league match day 2

UCL is still remains hard to predict. I remember barcelona's case last season when the team was almost qualifying for the playstage but intermilan was just destroying barcelona at the last match day. The same thing can happen with PSG if enrique's team will not be careful in facing newcastle and acmilan. PSG needs to make sure if its performance will always be stable in any matches.
Enrique needs to make sure its club can handle the current performance when it will face newcastle and acmilan. It doesn't matter if the club is only relying on mbappe as long as PSG will able to go to the play off stage.
Mbappe deserves a lot of praises caused by he was the only one who is helping the club so much while the rest are still lack of contribution to the club.
Yeah group F will be the attention of all groups because there are 4 elite clubs, we don't know how the second match will go and every club can take advantage of the opportunity when playing at home. Newcastle was actually a little lucky because they got one point even though they were playing away, our question is whether they will be able to get more points when PSG comes as away team? we will see it on October 5 and usually PSG always has difficulty when playing away.

I would say Newcastle and PSG played very well in the first match. Milan is one of the strongest teams in this group. Newcastle scored 1 point in the away match against Milan. The Newcastle team played well despite being inexperienced in the Champions League. PSG on the other hand earned full points against Dortmund. This has certainly increased PSG's chances of topping the table. Despite the team's performance in Ligue 1 being erratic, we saw PSG's dominance against Dortmund. The team has managed to play well with a relatively weak attack. I guess it won't be difficult for PSG to qualify for the knockout rounds.
