Great initiative to dig deeper finding what happened due to the demotion of Junior Members in September 2018.
In the chart above, there is a break point in mid of September. I think that it makes lot of sense.
After the demotion implemented, there were massive merit abusements in the forum, lots of Junior Members demoted got promoted again due to merit abusements.
Personally, there is a hypothesis that massive newbies got their first merits due to merit abusements after Sep. 2018, or due to their successfully pseudo-quality posts.
Eventually, most of them got banned.

The chart probably presents wrong x-axis scale, you stated there are 1934 newbies got banned, but the chart shows nearly 10k newbies got banned.
You should clarify it a little bit if the chart is right, or should correct it if it is wrong.

I also decided to extend the time interval of my previous chart up to January 24, 2018, and I got the following:



As I can see, 1934 newbies are already banned since the day the merit system was implemented on the forum.



foserfox is probably a hacked profile who sent merits to farmed accounts mostly in the russian local board, but I'm sure that the merit source EFS who is the moderator of the turkish local board didn't know that the users merited by him would be banned. I think this is absolutely normal.



I always select this checkbox when I publish my TOP-200 ratings, so as not to show the "cool" smile.

So, it looks that I have merited 2 users who got banned later. Well, not that bad, but still, sad for wasted merits... I see that one of these users got quite many Merits...
11.26% of users who ever got Merit is permanently banned now. It's huge number I think...

Plagiarism would be my guess too.

This is a bit of an eye opener for me. I had no idea that so many accounts I’d merited have been banned here. Is it correct to assume that a majority of them were banned for plagiarism?

Well my data seems pretty reasonable: 11 merited banned users (3,20% out of the 343 people I’ve merited), representing 23 sMerits (1,77%  out of 1.302 sMerits sent as of last Friday). Breaking it down by last rank of the banned user, I have merited: 1 Hero, 1 Sr. Member, 2 Full Members, 3 Members, 2 Jr. Members, 1 Newbie, and 1 Brand New.

Two banned names did surprise me, although I had already seen it at some point: @zentdex and @vphasitha01.

Wow!  I honestly was not expecting to be that high up on the list.  I haven't gone through the ranks of each of those banned members I've merited, but I'm guessing that those were cases of me trying to help newbies out, probably in the Economics section.  I don't usually give merits to noobs in Meta or Reputation.  Very interesting.

Still, I don't regret giving out those merits, since it was all done in good faith and I had no idea they'd get banned.  Obviously those were wasted merits, but you just can't know ahead of time whether someone is going to turn out to be a plagiarist or a ban evader or whatever.  I don't think I gave out merits to copy/pasted posts, as I always check before meriting a newbie's post.

Oh well.  This won't deter me from trying to help lower-ranked members, though lately I haven't seen much in the way of quality from the noobs.  My new PC has not arrived yet, so I haven't been browsing as much as I'd like to.  Nice analysis, OP.

I wonder how many of those non-banned accounts who have sent all their merits to banned accounts are actually alts of each other?

For the record, I have just two 2 such merits. One is sent to vphasitha01, I remember his 'ranking up' thread, didn't know he was banned...

I like the percentage statistic actually whereas the built in top senders to perma banned users only gives total merit sent. Nice little touch including the actual posts merited too, and checking mine I believe the majority deserved some merit. Although, some are now gone, and not viewable I think I remember those users at least being capable of creating good content occasionally.

Banning some of those users really looks like a loss for the forum, but I have no doubt there's a good reason.

I've made a top-list sorted by percentage. To make the list shorter, I've left out the users who only merited 1 banned user.
Sorting this way is quite nice, it brings the banned users to the top of the list, while the innocent ones are at the bottom.
The ones at the top (that aren't banned) might be interesting to check for abuse (but don't start a witch hunt based on this!).

Thanks for the information. Looking at my own list (http://loyce.club/Merit/banned/359716.html), i can't understand why the members are banned even though they went as far as to analysis malicious chrome add-ons and make detailed guide for air-gapped wallet.

Any plans to add "banned users merited by ranks"? It would be great to see such info since there are times when member with high-rank and made really good/useful posts got banned.

Probably ranking by the percentage of merited users that got banned would be a better indicator than the raw number in this case. Most of the users that got themselves banned in that list have a rate at around 30-40% so that would be a start.

All true This is not a list of shame for good users, but I think it can be used to find merit abuse from "bad users" too.

In the past I have merited a post which I then myself reported for plagiarism an hour later and got the user banned. It's simply not possible to double check every post or post history prior to awarding merit, just as it isn't realistic to expect people to check Loyce's or Vod's sites for every single post to see if a user is banned prior to meriting them. If possible, I would like to always avoid meriting plagiarism, but being banned doesn't automatically negate everything that user has ever posted, and some of their other posts may well be merit worthy.

I see BTCeminjas, iqrasalsabila, vphasitha01 had quite good activities in the forum and not only received merit from me but also from other users. They were doing very well in the forum.

It looks as if I awarded meits to 15 subsequently banned members. I'm going to have to ignore this fact, as it is hrd enough to find post to reward, and I've had to cut down on post history research. Looking at it from a strict perspective, I believe that merits are related to specific posts and/or threads, and not to posters behaviour. The trust/reputation system should take care of that, and the mods of course.

I don't believe it would be right to avoid meriting posts of red trusted members. Of course there is the issue of meriting posts AFTER the poster has been banned, and I don't think that should be done. That raises the issue of included the banned status in the displayed profile.
