It seems to be issue with the pool, I am placing temp ban on this pool till it is sorted out.

Are both using the same pool?

You can ban both of them: vc.cpu-pool.net and vc.talesfromthescrypt.org , the result is the same on both !! They're either using a beta wallet or using the wrong type of coin !!

All mining efforts are lost (I'm supposed to have almost 13 VCs and have zero). Is there any chance of ever recovering from this???

Can you assure that there's at least a working pool??

try to check in blcok explorer

i check all pools have current block is stable.
check you wallet block count and block count and diff in pool if it is different you wallet not synced correct or you have old version of wallet.

That's just the version I'm using, it's probably a special fork (SPH-sgminer) - search for it in the DRK, HVC, HIRO or MYR threads, I got it from wanting to mine those coins.
Also check the http://cryptomining-blog.com/, they usually have all the insights into special and custom versions of miner software.
