Wow, so if a Canadian peaceful protester decides to just go home, the police will still hunt you down and persecute you without cause or justification? What a dystopian, Orwellian nightmare police state that Canada has now become.

I hate to say it, but Canada is now making Commiefornia look like an ideal place to live.

And I'm sure we won't be seeing any George Floyd style protests for this poor guy or any outrage from the MSM, probably because he miraculously lived.  Roll Eyes

Given everything going on in my life, managing a LN node is more negative, parasitic energy that has complicated my life beyond any rational measure.

I need to step away, for my own mental health and sanity.

Geez - I've been away for several quarters, and the news don't change. AKA history repeats

Managing high end technology issues -which will be resolved irrevocable in the foreseeable future- in Bob's current stressful personal life - he just needs a break to get things sorted- has nothing to do with supporting your beloved bCash SV, which has plummeted to oblivion, like we all expected it that history will repeat itself endlessly with all shitcoins. Giving that, youre shattered shitcoin dreams meets harsh reality while Lightning is vigorous flourishing in all metrics like never before.

Speaking of Bitcoin Cash (BCH), back in 2017, right after the fork, I got my BCH forked coins (as did all BTC HoDLers at the time), and was considering keeping them along with my Bitcoin, as a safety measure, in case BCH overtook BTC at some point in the near future (yes, I dared consider that possibility). I remember selling them (the BCH), and then changing my mind and buying them back. Eventually, I sold them all at an average price that was much higher than the current BCH price (!), and converted them to Bitcoin (BTC).

Had I kept my BCH from the 2017 fork, I would have ended up with a shitcoin that now has LESS value than it had then!

Instead, I sold all my BCH for BTC, thereby increasing my BTC stash by several whole coins, which are now worth one order of magnitude (10x) more than the price I bought them!

Lesson learned: Stick with Bitcoin, get rid of all forks (BCH, BSV, etc.), convert to BTC & HoDL.

BCash is actually lower in price now than it was during the flippening. Everyone should have dumped it back then immediately.

TL/DR;

Bob rage quit running an LN node because he values his sanity and life outside of Bitcoin.

WO forum begs him to un-rage quit because "We need more LN node operators!" (do we really tho?).

Bob vows to rejoin the insanity in 18 months.

Bob, i hope this isn't the last time you go down this rabbit hole!

It won't be. Plan to revisit in at least another 18 months.

'The right to privacy matters'
BUT the need for privacy is also quite real, and we are best off when we are aware of the situation.  Privacy in Bitcoin use is a VERY important issue.  And at the risk of being Batslapped... there is a reason Monero has taken BTC's market in many of the dark net sites...

Yeah overall I see what your saying in your post. But... I feel like your last statement above is a little bit back to that of a typical Bitcoiner who disregards everything I said #1-#3 in my post above. It's the dodge of the elephant, again.

Case in point: Monero users might have private transactions (or so they believe, wink wink), but the goods and services they are buying with it, or the fiat conversions they are doing, are being monitored and tracked by the establishment. So then what's the point? How is that really private? I heard a story a while back of a bodybuilder that used Monero to purchase steroids. He/she thought their transaction was private, but the FBI still tracked the illegal mail package to their house and arrested them. The "privacy" of the transaction made zero difference, they got caught anyway. I'm sure the same has happened to people trying to use Monero to buy illegal drugs, guns, shady services, etc.

Regarding the idea of countries splitting into smaller municipalities..the trend is certainly in that direction.
Whether it would be formalized as depicted in "Snow Crash" or not remains to be seen.

I read an interesting article about how people are moving to stay with populations that are 'more like them'.

Call me crazy, but I purposely moved to a certain state to live out my days for exactly this reason. I already see the writing on the wall in terms of where things are heading, and it ain't good.

I honestly think we are taking past each other really...  I recognize that privacy is a spectrum, and any transaction has parts that are not at all private.  I just see the fundamental design of Bitcoin as something that is going to cause some issues for people when they read pseudonymous as anonymous.

 I agree yeah.

you can be undetectable .  Just make a wallet and mine to it.  So there is an address that just gets coins in a wallet no one knows the owner of the wallet.  Here is an address

https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/1GVsS1oX4seNuvSgGUosvYc3EtD2aT9JFA

if you view it you see coins going in and never coming out.

if you look at the source  of the coins you see they come from a well know pool address.

Better yet mine solo with enough gear and you only get coins from the blockchain.

both cases no one knows the owner of the coins

one case the source is from a well know pool
one case the source is direct from the block chain.

So no one knows the address but if you are USA based like me. Those coins are taxable at the price on the day you got them.

And if you sell them 10 years later with a cap gain they are taxable again.

So it is not very wise to hide them if you are USA based.

Closed all my channels. Shutting it down.

Given everything going on in my life, managing a LN node is more negative, parasitic energy that has complicated my life beyond any rational measure.

Should have just left it on and set it aside and let it do it's own thing. Your 5BTC and 100+ channels makes an impact.

Doesn't matter how small or big your LN node is, just by having it on and help routing payments you are part of the eco-system and helping build the future of payments.

LN shouldn't be and isn't this complicated. We need to stop worrying about unbalanced channels. Forget about what you have read! It is bullshit! Your LN node will function and route payments when it can. Simple.

For future reference, if you want to chase the fees then this may not be for you. To manage 100+ channels is not worth the fees you would potentially generate. The time spent, alone is enough to drive people nuts!

But if you want to learn and understand what this Layer 2 scaling solution is all about and earns some fees to break even, this is the mentality you need to take into this venture/rabbit hole.

I went down this journey to better understand LN from a technical point of view, not from a Bob and Alice simple view, but under the hood, how channels are opened and closed. How payment routing really works. I almost got lost and threw the towel in after the 1st week, but then remembered why I chose to run a LN node.

Having an unbalance channel is not detrimental at all, it just means you will have to wait for the tide to shift. Some days I have ZERO routes, then the tide shifts...

The only thing I would suggest is making sure your LN node's overall amount, is close to balance, you have liquidity coming and out. That means if you have committed 5BTC for outbound, then you should have a similar amount for inbound. There are websites out there like lightningnetwork+ that facilitates this.

I said in a previous post, and I am standing behind it, I still believe most of my routing is a results of LN nodes trying to balance their channels. The amounts that are routed and the frequency of the routes feels like someone running and automated script to re-balance their LN Node.

And yes, I have run some of these automated scripts and they are dangerous and will cause you too lose SATs if you do not pay attention! I ran it, and with realising one my channels was set to a crazy high fee, it automatically re-balance and cost me 4,390Sats, thinking it could recoup the spent sats if the channel was used... that is if!!!!

Bob, i hope this isn't the last time you go down this rabbit hole!
