I dont care about the merits but I want to like a post, show the poster how I really appreciate his answer or the information the provided for me.
In addition to leaving them a reply saying "I really appreciate your answer," you could always link the post in this thread and if someone else with a merit to spare finds it worthy, they will merit it on your behalf.
I said that because it feels like you are hunting for merits. You already got caught doing this last year here, in addition to doing it on your own local board. Try writing better posts instead of posts about merits? Just a thought.

The second option is not the intention of what I wanted to say. Of course I can propose a good post there and its nice if it gets rewarded. However, someone else is deciding if that post is merit-worthy not me.
So lets say you have a scenario of two poster posting opposing opinions. A democrat vs. a republican post. A merit source who is republican can appreciate opinion A) with lets say 10 merits. I, as a democrat, can barely give out one most of the time, even though I think the second post is more merit-worthy, e.g. its also my opinion. So my opinion on the post it less worthy.
(this is just an exxagerated example, of how it could work out. Of course giving merits shouldnt just be about supporting a one-sided opinion.)
I am not sure if i properly explained my thoughts right now. However, thank you for your post
