according to me the best altcoin to keep a variety of altcoins would be coinomi.
i am using it currently to store ethereum, bitcoin, litecoin, dogecoin and some other cryptos.
it is versatile and their contact team(in case of queries) are responsive.
its prices are what majority of the exchanges follow and unlike other wallets does not deviate by 100-200$  .

For different tokens, of course, you need to use MEW, and after you have sold them, then you can transfer to a hardware purse. I ordered a ledger nano, in April I wait for the parcel. And I'll keep the main ones there.

if the coin has an ERC20 platform, I think MyEtherWallet (MEW) can still be relied upon to store it.

As I  am using  for ERC20 based crypto currencies Myetherwallet.com is the best. Recent times most of coins are ERC based.
Do not be too comfortable with MEW. we still have to have another option to save our coins.
some people have fishing cases. and always bookmark MEW and keep the private key in a safe place.

I also really like the crypto wallet jaxx.
But unfortunately there are not all the coins. I mine ZCL and it can not be trundled into a wallet, so I have to drop it on the stock exchange for now.

I'm not comfortable with multi-coin wallets. I only have Ledger Nano S and I can combine it with Myetherwallet. All other big coins I need to install their own wallet just to feel safe. You know safety is everything in this business.
Yesm we can easily lose all of our funds in the absence of security. I also came to the conclusion that it is better to store keys on a third-party hardware wallet. Only I bought myself TREZOR, because it exists on the market for a longer time.

This question depends on the kinds of tokens one is trying to keep and their peculiarity. For Erc-20 supported tokens, i think Myetherwallet is the best anyone can get around for know. However, some other wallets are also lining up in the pecking order such as Imtoken, Eidoo; which i cannot actually vouch for their sophisophistications as good and safe wallets for keeping one's hard earned fortunes. Also i have seen and heard people give good testimonies of Nano Ledger; although have not tried out my self, but i think it actually worths giving a trial also. However, to get one is quite exorbitant.

Personally, I use MyEtherWallet for all my ERC20 Altcoins, as it is pretty safe and very easy to use. While all my other coins that are not I keep them on exchanges. Never keep all your money on one spot.

Which wallets are the best for keeping a wide variety of altcoins?
Best way to store your crypto currencies is on a hardware wallet.

Trezor supports BTC, BCH, BTG, ZEC, ETC and ETC.

The Ledger Nano S supports a lot of more altcoins. You can also use the Ledger to connect to Etherdelta which I strongly recommend.
