Bitcoin is like the internet, it is not just one thing.  in order for the internet to go down, you would need 99% of the computers in the world to go down.  There will always be an internet up and even if the internet went down, it would pop back up for all the internet consists of is a bunch of computers grouped together to share and exchange information.

Dude suggest a possible thing. what you telling is not possible If internet shuts we cant do anything. mining will stopped, transactions will stopped We can't do any option to solve else we have create new medium like internet.

This is what I thought, but just wanted to make sure. A bunch of people in real life were trying to freak me out.

Well I`m glad that I found some logical answer on this question, first question from people who never heard about bitcoin is exactly this " what will happen if someone turn it off?" Well Im not an expert in all this and I didnt know how to answer this question in good way.  I admit i was afraid in some moments, when i thought about things like this.

If the internet goes down, bitcoin is the last thing I would think about.

There would be some a massive panick action through the whole world. Chaos, anarchy or maybe even worse.

This is good one! And this is probably truth, who knows what will happen and what kind of massive panic chaos will become from turning off internet. What will people do without facebook, instagram, twitter... they will go out on the steet and start shooting each other. Eh it would be nice maybe...

What if the internet goes down temporarily? What would happen to BTC?

See the article about ISIS possibly trying to take down the internet.

As the Hillary Clinton email scandal has taught us, even high-ranking government officials use the internet to share sensitive information

Who the hell wrote this article, and why are they getting paid for this when I'm sitting here posting on bitcointalk  Undecided

The hacking experts believe that it only took around 18,000 smartphones running the ISIS app at the same time to generate the massive amount of internet traffic needed to disrupt the system.

Do these people know anything about ISIS?  Unless there's some secret Islamic State phone-farm running 18k instances, I highly doubt that many fighters have phones with the capabilities to run such an app

Nevermind then, I'm done reading this trash

given the cayos happening in the world i wouldn't be surprised of nuclear war and in this case i would expect internet disruption question is what happens to Bitcoin if internet goes down?

home internet and mobile internet goes down

do not mean trade bitcoin to buy/sell i mean using it as a way of payment say you wanted to send money to someone abroad for family far away

Internet cannot gone forever even disrupts by war. Humans might gone first before internet if nuclear war happen again. Grin

It is hard that internet go down. Because is something which is entering in every cell of our life. And if want to be killed in some part or in to many parts can reborn in the remaining ones. Then with the application of the peer to peer technology on its structure, is hoped that internet become much more (if not all) decentralized. If this will become true it will be almost impossible to kill it. Every part will become independent and to kill internet must be killed every computer. Very hard thing to became true.

But if it will be true a similar thing like the situation mentioned in the main post, bitcoin will remain there where was the last moment before the destruction. Then, if in the future, in the new internet, will be possible to be recovered that part when the bitcoin was, that bitcoin can be used again. Like nothing was happen. If not will be lost forever.

If internet goes down bitcoin transaction will be slow and bitcoin price will become cheap than gold..
So before internet goes down sell your all bitcoins before it happens..

I'm sorry man, but what in the actual fuck are you talking about??

Of course if the internet goes down, Bitcoin transactions will be "slow"... not only that, non existent.  The second thing is that Bitcoin is not even close to the price of gold as of right now; it is probably over 2X the amount per "unit" it sells for.

Next, you automatically assume, (for some reason that I can't wrap my head around) that the internet is destined to go down for some reason. Don't you realize that this is a very unpredictable/not very likely thing to occur? If someone in high power were to start shutting down the internet, and mind, you can't just shut down the WHOLE internet to shut down upon command.

You know, it's funny, because last night I was watching the Republican debates last night and Donald Trump was saying that he would essentially shut down ISIS's internet, which is hilarious because there is no way to shut down someone's internet entirely. Coming from a stand point where he thinks that the "internet" is nationally "regioned" in a way is quite hilarious to me and further continues my counter arguments towards Trump supporters.

*Sorry for the irrelevance toward people outside the US... just seems to relate to the topic here*.

All the internet is are a bunch of connected computers, so what is preventing the largest mining operation (in regards to hashrate) from mining all the coins and requiring that every Bitcoin client that reconnects to the network after the internet comes back online from following the largest miner who had the largest hash rate???

Barring a hard fork to correct it, of course.

In XEM we trust
The whole world will have a bigger problems than BTC
Internet can't go down that easily with simple attack or accident. The only reasons I can think of that can cause WHOLE network to fail are:

1. EMP attack of a large scale (and that won't affect whole internet, but can affect whole country)
2. Solar Flare Effect - the most dangerous catastrophe which can happen to us (this will however turn off ALL electricity on planet Earth down).

So with with internet down I would be worried more about my life than anything else as crisis preceding this event will most likely be huge.
I think internet is as far as, you can't really turn off the internet without turning off the electricity. Since pretty much every place is connected somehow.

Since there will be no cash in the future, this is not really a problem. All competing currencies would suffer from the same disadvantages if internet goes down because in 20 to 30 years all payments will be digital and online.
