Merit is the means to increase your rank. You can increase your rank according to your post and merit. Eg:- If you want to achieve "Member" rank then you need 10 merit and 60 activities. If you want to achieve "full member" rank then you need 100 merit and 120 post. This way you can increase your rank through merit and post. I am giving you a picture taken from this Bitcoin forum, where you can better understand how much merit and how many posts you can get which rank.

Merit is what simply makes you to grow in rank depending on the amount given to you by a forum member. Merit is usually given to a person through a quality post made by the person  in any where in the forum. It helps to identify your rank and your positive contribution on the forum. But I think you should study more by reading, you will get to know more better. Everyone else here was once a newbie so don feel left out you will understand how the system fully works when you may have spent 2 to 3 months and above here.

Merits are like "reactions" to your post in which people may give to your given comment. These so-called reactions have an impact on your forum rank as the more reactions that you receive, the more likelihood that your forum rank would be upgraded. The only difference is that, there is a limited amount of reactions where a person may give, unlike in Facebook where you could like/react on every post that you get.

In this forum, these reactions are called merits in which people would give your thread/comment if they find it useful or helpful in some way. The more you have merits, you would be eligible to rank-up, like what theymos said in this THREAD:

Now, what does it mean if you have a higher rank in this forum? Well, there are signature campaigns that you may participate depending on your forum ranking and these campaigns pay you weekly in BTC. The higher your rank is, the higher the pay that you would receive at the end of every week.

Be reminded, however, that merits should not be your MAIN goal in this forum. Use it as an inspiration in creating several posts/replies and the by-product of your efforts would be receiving merits in the process.

A piece of advise I strongly suggest you will be needing to keep you going progressively on the forum, which is, don't go chasing for merits as that will be the wrong way to go. Rather, go for knowledge, learn and add to the little I believe you already know and heard about cryptocurrency  as a newbie. Your growth in the forum is in how much of a beneficial knowledge you can give/contribute to the community. That's the secret of how merit are attracted which in extension is the purpose of the meriting system.

Does questions around merit really mean chasing merit?

Your own qualifications are not just a measure of talent because it depends on what you use your talent for. Even the follow-up of questions around merit may indicate a desire to better understand its concepts. Eligibility criteria can be expressed through different gradings. I think that opportunities to develop your skills are created over time and environment.

A look at that query, reveals the quest to understand the nitty-gritty of the environ you find yourself.

However, I believe merits is an invaluable and indelible part of this community as it is with its psychological vibes. With different membership grades, the psychological drive behind it is obvious as well seeing some one with high post/activity and merit is just like every day life.

Can I say that merit speaks of the quality of knowledge acquired and released here...

To be honest, during my first month on this community, I didn't even know how the merit works, I didn't feel much concern about it until I started to receive the merit too. It surprises me how a newbie that has just been on the forum for 6 days is already asking about the merit system, there are other important rules about the community which you need to know about, if you go against those rules, you will face the consequences. Get to know the forum rules, stay active on the forum and you will even know how the merit works.
Maybe he is new to this forum and even he doesn't know how Merit works? For which maybe he wanted to know about Merit. I think its not wrong to ask because as a newbie many members ask such questions we should answer them properly. In fact, one of the reasons why people are so concerned about merit is that it shows their worth. Maybe all members of this forum have the right to ask all kinds of forum related questions, I think asking about merit is also within the rules of this forum.

Apprentices need to know from the very beginning how merit works and how to earn merit or how much merit earns a rank or how much activity earns a rank membership. Whenever a member's post is constructively informative, if someone likes that post, they can give it a merit gift.
Good people, I must confess that some questions asked by one will make other beginners like me not to ask again haven been informed by the amiable responds given to those questions. Not to forget, info flows through different channels, hear say, and many other sources... Thanks for time used in keeping others informed about the whole thing.

If you are interested in the system with so much zeal and passion to learn and gain knowledge about it, I believe you don't need to be looking for Merits right after joining the forum, you don't even need to know about it if you are here to learn and grow.
I know it has become cliché for us to tell newbies not to worry about merits, but i think if a user who is truly a newbie joins the forum, it is normal for them to ask what merits really mean, though they can use the search button to find out for themselves.

The purpose of merits is to encourage quality posts and to stop shitposters from ranking up, thus i don't think it is bad for newbies to inquire about merits, it can act as something that motivates them to make quality posts and contribute constructively. Yes, it could also negatively affect those who chase after it excessively, but for many it could become a positive motivation and work in their favor.

Op, why are you so interested to know what merit is all about like your whole life depends on it, why can't you ask your friend who introduced you to the forum to educate you on the necessary things to know or do before you think of knowing about things that comes after you have gotten the knowledge because you don't seem to know things about the forum or Bitcoin. Do you want to benefit in knowledge or you were told that you could become rich overnight after joining the forum because from your post you seem to have been told about the importance of gaining merits that is why you are too inquisitive to know how you can get it instead of developing and increasing your knowledge which is the most important thing to do.

I don't understand why your friend didn't explain the basics to you after referring you to the forum if he wanted you to join the forum to learn about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies then he did the right thing by not mentioning about merits and making you chase them, but even then, he should have at least let you know how the forum works in the first place so that you don't need to come here and start asking questions about very basic things.

Anyway, below is the post where you can read all about merit, what it is, its purpose and importance, and every other detail that you need to know about it:

However, for knowledge's sake, let me enlighten you about it.

Merit is a point that you get from other forum users as an appreciation or a reward for your posts that they like or find constructive. It is subjective as to why one gives it to you, one might agree with a point you have mentioned, or find a post of yours humorous, it can be for any reason known to the person giving it to you, but in general, merit is a symbol of appreciation and an indicator that you are a good poster of this forum and that you deserve ranking up, which is why you can only have a higher rank over time if you manage to gain a substantial amount of merits, and if you fail to do so, you won't be able to gain higher ranks no matter how many posts you make and how active you are in the forum.

I hope I made it clear enough for you making it as simple as possible.  Smiley

If the topic, post or thread you create contains elements of the requirements for a quality, constructive and informative post, then you really deserve to be called a quality member. Merit Source and other generous members appreciate your posts with merit. But if on the contrary, the majority of posts he makes are very close to spam, zero value topics or worse still off topic, then you will be considered a shitposter or spammer.

Merit will be given based on the quality of the post you make, each member has their own criteria for assessing whether a post deserves merit or not depending on their individual point of view. Always try to make quality posts that are useful for other members. If generous members judge your posts to meet quality criteria, they will reward your posts with merit. Never expect merit for every post you produce because it can have a negative effect when no one appreciates your post with merit.

I will also want to ask if there are future plans to change the merit system. I understand that the actual merits are not sendable to others and only the sMerits can be sent. I'm curious to know if for instance, I can also gift out of my actual merit to a user.
The merit system is working well the way it is designed, it might not be perfect, but there is nothing that needs to be changed about it (right now). You cannot send out your "merits" to other users and the admin is not going to waste their time implementing such a thing, because rarely will anybody use it, you can only send Smerits to others.
I also wanted to ask if there are threads where we can decide to submit our posts for a review for merits gifting, when we create quality posts that are worthy of meriting.
Yes:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/self-moderated-report-unmerited-good-posts-to-merit-source-5093271
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/merit-share-your-best-poststhreads-with-fillippone-to-be-merit-assessed-5412657
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/restarted-post-history-review-offer-5426440
Lastly, how can I know which of the posts to submit that are worthy of receiving merits, what are the indices of measuring a quality post in the forum?
There is nothing set in stone about that, quality posts could even be subjective sometimes. That being said, if you grow your knowledge and you are genuinely contributing to discussions, helping other users out and not spamming, then you stand a chance to earn merits in the forum.

OP, whatever you do on the forum within the space of time you will be here, make sure to adhere to forum rules and regulations. The forum wedges a heavy stick on plagiarism. It's so you take note and learn how to always reference and give credit to authors whose materials you use in your posts/threads.

Let's me drop some common tips that would help increase the quality of yah post.

*Always take your time when replying or creating a thread , you have all the time so don't need to be in hurry.
It's common with most newbies. They find it difficult putting more time in creating threads. We often get to find loosely written threads/posts without in-depth contributions and I guess it's because those are written in a haste. I hope they get to read this post and slow down on the rush. I've yet to see anyone here who got an award as the fastest user for opening thread(s).

Quote
* Always read through all the reply in a post to gain More understanding (due to learning from different sources) and also to avoid repeating what someone has said already, before posting
This is where reading and comprehension are valued more than posting without substance.

Op, in as much as you have been given link to read how the merit system works, be rest assured that getting merit isn't a mandatory thing here if you only want to learn from the community, however if you have come to spend quality time and participate in all round activities in the forum such as ranking up, joining signature campaigns, then merit is a must thing for you in this regard.
Welcome to the forum and read the rules first.

I will be grateful if any good minded person can kindly throw more light that to enable understand in details.

I believe you should check this post out to understand what the merit is all about
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/merit-new-rank-requirements-2818350

The merit system was implemented in 2018 the forum Admin due to the rampant increase of shit posters and the need for quality post on the forum. It is the reward you get for creating good, useful, quality and helpful post here on the forum. I believed your friend should have informed you a bit about the merit along side as a requirement for you to rank up. When you make good post you are rewarded merits by members who finds your post of quality and helpful to him or the community. For every one merit you earn, you have 0.5 smerits(sendable merit) so if you earn two merits, you get 1 smerits which you can give to other members you find their post helpful.

Thank you for this convincing explanation, I will also want to ask if there are future plans to change the merit system. I understand that the actual merits are not sendable to others and only the sMerits can be sent. I'm curious to know if for instance, I can also gift out of my actual merit to a user.
