altcoin is a variation of the main coin of bitcoin, if you see bitcoin as a transaction tool and a decentralized digital currency with blockchain technology. whereas altcoin is a variation of bitcoin, altcoin has blockchain and decentralized technology but is different from bitcoin. altcoin is more aimed at certain business models such as industry, online shopping business, real estate and others.
Bitcoin is mother coin and the altcoin is coin built on ERC-20.
This one is easy: Anything that isn't bitcoin is an altcoin (alternative coin).
It's not an official term at all, it just was used to describe coins besides btc in the early days and now everyone has adopted it.
So, with that in mind, that means that even eth and ripple are altcoins.
But nowadays, people use altcoin to generally describe other coins outside of the top 10 on cmc.
People rarely refer to the big coins as alts anymore and just call them by their names.

Everything is simple, thanks to Bitcoin cryptocurrency has gained wide fame, then people have come to believe Bitcoin is the main cryptocurrency and And everything else is alternative cryptocurrencies or alternative coins or simply, altcoins. If I understand correctly-it so.

Well, altcoins are simply coins that are not bitcoins. The word altcoins have been coined here in the bitcointalk forum because this is a bitcoin forum. It stands for alternative coins. the same case can also be said if there is a coin that you like to be your main coin that would make bitcoin an altcoin also like others. For example, you like NEO, you can make it as your main coin and call bitcoin an altcoin. But of course it will be a different case if you include other people's thoughts since we all have different opinions and point of views. Meaning, some would agree with your thought and some won't. From what i understand, bitcoin is a type of digital currency in which you can be used this for online transactions, while altcoins short for alternative coins it is similar to bitcoins but have different kinds of coin that can be used in any platform.
Bitcoin is the foundation of all the cryptocurrencies, the first of it's kind or the alpha and the altcoins are the successors of bitcoin which means they came from the same code which is bitcoin's code.
What I understand is that before bitcoin the cryptocurrency is already existing but it's the bitcoin which was able to resolved issues with digital currency. So bitcoin is considered to be the first successful cryptocurrency. It was then followed by alternate coins or simply called altcoins.

Bitcoin is the first crypto currency that is made successful. A lot of people called bitcoin as a mother of all currency for it is the first currency that is made by Satoshi Nakamoto and this currency is the most popular among all.
