Recently, a friend of mine approached me with a question about what he should read about gambling. He read a lot of specialized forums and looked at information on websites, but he was not satisfied. He started betting on sports not so long ago, but began to lose a lot and realized that he had a significant lack of theoretical knowledge. He loves books and believes that only books present knowledge systematically, and not chaotically, as on many websites. But his question stumped me. Although I have read some books on sports betting, poker and other games, I do not know what specifically to advise a beginner. What books would you recommend?

There is no book that can be given as reading material for betting on several types of bets.
For me, in sports betting, what he (your friend) must do is like the type of sport which then makes him know and master the game of the sport. Then slowly begin to understand which teams and on what basis he places bets.
The most basic thing I can mention in betting on football. He needs to follow every team that competes every week.

In our internet era, finding books about gambling is not difficult; just enter a query in the search, and you will get thousands of results. But I still think that these books are unlikely to be a step-by-step guide to winning and winning the jackpot; rather, these are general rules known to all, written from different sides by different views of the authors. But I agree that the more information we draw from all sources, including books, the more confident our actions will be not only in the practice of gambling but also in all other endeavors.

Here are several books that the search gives when you query about gambling

Reading a book is good but we should search for other information from Internet because Internet will gives us so many information that we needs. So you can suggest him to search the info from the internet. Maybe that will takes time before he can get what he needs but that is worth so he can practice the lesson in the poker. But learning poker is not just from the books but we he can watch the video about poker so he can get more lesson and practice that in the real poker game.

If he wants to know more about sports betting, he should know that he should learn about analysis methods and how he can find more information. That means, he must have more resources to find what he needs. We can advise many books but that could not be the books that he is looking for.

This is a sign he is not gambling responsibly; he's throwing in more than he can afford to lose into the casino and that is a hell of a bad start in gambling. I think learning how to gamble in moderation is the first thing he needs now. Practically almost that nobody reads books when they started gambling. I didn't myself, just mixed up with a few gambler friends of mine, observed and asked a few questions, the rest I learned while gambling.

I do not know what specifically to advise a beginner. What books would you recommend?
The best advice to give him as at now is to take gambling easy, recommend books on gambling in moderation to him and help tutor him on that if you have enough time to do it. If he really has a lot of strength and free time, he should channel such energy into other profitable ventures rather than taking gambling as seriously as he is intending now. Its better he learns the most important aspect of gambling which is emotional control and gambling in moderation at this his cradle stage in gambling before he escalates things to a damaging state for himself. Even when I got addicted and lost terribly, only then did I know I should slow things down in gambling. Your friend shouldn't learn the hard way, he can be saved by giving him the information on gambling responsibly in his early days.

I dont think there is a gambling book that tell how to to gambling or improves the win rate of overall gambling. But I just curios as you and do quick goggle search and turn out there there are many books about gambling, including books about casino gambling, sports betting, and the history of gambling.

Just scrolled and found amazon sites and here what I found https://www.amazon.com/Winners-Guide-Casino-Gambling-Completely/dp/0452276985

• Where you can get in on riverboat gambling along the Mississippi and other great American waterways, how and where you can play the new electronic games"

I'd say that not really about the books but with more experience and he'll get to know more about gambling and himself as well. With more experience as he started to bet already, he'll see how he's reactive with each bet that he makes.

So, that's what I'd tell your friend if he ever asks me about how to do it. It's plain and simple, gamble with a small amount and learn the game itself whether it's with poker, sports betting or casino games.

He has to be familiarized with it and get some idea on how the game works and how he can control his emotion towards it.

In continuation of my previous list, now there are books that I personally am skeptical about, but nevertheless, maybe someday I will read. Maybe someone will find it useful.
Arthur Conrad "How to Win at Slots: Casino Codex - Tipping the House Edge to the Player's Advantage"
Kevin Dolan "The Complete Guide to Sports Betting: The six key betting principles that professional bettors use to ensure profit at the sports book." - Although this is not about gambling, but I plan to get acquainted.

These books are for beginners:
Derick Crawford "How to Play Poker for Beginners - Learn the Strategy, Fundamentals, Psychology, Game Theory, Math & Advanced Systems"
Derick Crawford "A Beginners Gambling Guide At The Casino - Learn How To Play Blackjack, Craps, Roulette & Baccarat"

Kevin Blackwood "Play Blackjack Like the Pros" - This book might be interesting.

There are a lot of books on gambling in general. The problem is that it's hard to distinguish really good, useful books from nonsense until you read them. But it takes a lot of time, which is not enough.

I would start from THE ULTIMATE BITCOIN BETTING GUIDE. There are a lot of good articles... interesting things from the world of sports, guides, strategies, and other useful things. For a beginner, it can be good to read about how crypto betting works and which crypto sportsbooks are the best.

He (and anyone else) can join GOSUBETTING Tipster Challenge and test his skills. Since it's free, he doesn't risk his money, and with a bit of luck, he can win something.

Books about gambling are bogus mate.

Read them only if you have nothing else to do. Most of betting comes from experience and knowing about the teams you are betting on. That needs personal time spent on analyzing the games and observing future games.

Rest of the knowledge required to play EV- games can be easily obtained by playing it or watching some youtube videos.

No book will help you change your luck, period.

Well, I read the individual articles on thematic sites or forums, because there the information is presented in a more "concentrated" form, although also not always. I can list some of the books (I haven't read any of them in full yet, I only read the parts that interest me in books):

Mark Bollman "Mathematics of The Big Four Casino Table Games: Blackjack, Baccarat, Craps, & Roulette"
Mark Bollman "Basic Gambling Mathematics: The Numbers Behind The Neon" - The second edition of this book was published in 2024, and that's what you need to look for.
Mark Bollman "Mathematics of Keno and Lotteries" - I haven't read this one at all yet, but I plan to get acquainted, since I have only a cursory knowledge of the lottery.
Mark Bollman "Intermediate Poker Mathematics" - As a poker guide or tutorial, this book is not the best option. Rather, you can read it for interest.

Aside from theoretical knowledge, one still needs a practical approach to things too especially things like gambling that requires the active involvement of the players, so even if you have read all the books related to gambling on a specific game, you still need to have experience and those experiences come from long term practices. The reason your friend lost a lot in sports bets is because he was just choosing the games to bet on without knowledge and only based on luck, it's a bad approach, so while looking for books try to let him build information and participate actively in both discussions and games.

What is there to read? I doubt that the majority of us have even opened a book regarding gambling. There certainly is great information on the internet that you can find; reading articles or books never hurt. The more knowledge, the better, but I don't think it's necessary to go over complicated analysis and books explaining the whole process. Gambling is pretty straightforward; sports betting is a different story, but you do need to know what kind of bets you can make (handicap, over 2x, etc.). What you need to know is what psychological tricks casinos use (including online ones) to make you spend more; self-control and budgeting are essential when it comes to gambling.

I cannot include knowledge of all types of gambling in my opinion on this issue, since there are many types of gambling, and I am not a frequent player in betting. But I will definitely say that in those games where there is not only luck, such as poker and other card games, you need to know the rules. Here you will not be able to press the "auto play" button and leave the screen in anticipation of big money. For example, in poker you need to know mathematics very well in order to constantly calculate your chances of success. In blackjack it is the same. You need to know how to put pressure on opponents with a large bank, when you bet aggressively in your game, and when you are just a passive player who is supposedly ready to accept someone else's rules. Poker players definitely need to know the theory.
Since books quickly become outdated, I would advise them to look for fresh articles.

Not everything in theory can be proven through direct experience. Practice gives you new experiences, therefore when your friend only reads books but experiences facts that do not match, he must be disappointed. Don't be too bookish about something that is gambling, because you will not really apply it well. What you need to advise him is to be wise in responding to what is read and what is practiced. The rules that apply in a book will slowly no longer apply when entering ongoing gambling.

Smiles.. It is funny to see people talks about book related to gambling, to me gambling is more practical games which you must know what you are doing to get the results you wanted. For instance, you can't be a sport bettor without you developing interest to watch football and other sports, and if you must be a casino player you must know how those games functions exactly for you to win and even as that, the winning are not guaranteed they all still depends on luck.
In generally, those who referencing books here are they people who puts in their experience and what they see in gambling as books, you can start gambling today but you would never experienced those things listed in any of the books otherwise, more people today could have broke through the house but still seems so difficult to them. So, gambling doesn't have books (people may write their experience as books but doesn't work to another user) since is a game of chances and luck.

He should take a break off gambling and think about  what he wishes to get from gambling,  is it fun, to make money or to just keep gambling because he's addicted,  whichever it is that will drive his focus and streamline his values for gambling which will then grow into helping him build strategy and gamble better than he had before now, if he gets all the knowledge he desires to get from the book and sites and he doesn't have a pattern and a system to gambling with he's definitely still going to make more losses gambling.

Yes that is how it works. In reading through the OPs post, I feel the friend believes he is missing out tricks to what would bring him winning.
So I think I the OP as an experienced gambler should just orientate the guy and bring it to his ideal that winning in gambling especially sport games are basically on lucky and not professionalism or some kind magical.
Some people will not listen until they will experience it themselves. I think this is how OP friend might be because when I started gambling in the past, I looked for ways to make money. Many people close to me corrected me but I keep on gambling irresponsibly and also keep on losing. I wish him best of luck to learn what gambling is.

Just saying that... Without reading books we can still play on some sport bets just with the basic knowledges like... The football which you just have to understand that your roles to play their is to decide what outcome the game would be, what team you are betting on and which one you are against which then involves analytical or technical thoughts.

This is also what I though, no books but the basics of the sports itself, just see who is the favorite in this game and try to bet on it and see how it goes. At least get a feel of the game itself. And from there, maybe expound his knowledge on our betting strategies.

So for me that's how I started, I remember though asking my father before on his favorite sports to bet. But nothing like reading materials, maybe I'm just as old school as others gamblers who are more willing to take the risk and everything and bet.

But in any case though, it seems that others have recommend books so that could be a good start.

This guy need to be let known of responsible gambling so that he does not also put his mind up on adopting gambling as reliable source of income because his long time of gambling and no winning was what inspired him on what book to read just to catch up profits.

Being on this gambling board regularly and engaging in gambling educative discussions beats any books on gambling, so tell your friend to be visiting this perticular board regularly. Understanding how gambling works is not that complex, you just need to know how to gamble responsibly and you'd be very fine. No need to read many books or enroll in gambling courses, that is if there's any, except perhaps for addicts, you just need to understand the basics. For me it's have a weekly or monthly budget for gambling and let the amount be what you can afford to loose. Have a bankroll for gambling in a day and never exceed it whether you're winning or losing, by that you can't chase loses or over gamble with your wins.
