Recently, a friend of mine approached me with a question about what he should read about gambling. He read a lot of specialized forums and looked at information on websites, but he was not satisfied. He started betting on sports not so long ago, but began to lose a lot and realized that he had a significant lack of theoretical knowledge. He loves books and believes that only books present knowledge systematically, and not chaotically, as on many websites. But his question stumped me. Although I have read some books on sports betting, poker and other games, I do not know what specifically to advise a beginner. What books would you recommend?
But what kind of theoretical knowledge are you addressing here when we are discussing sports betting? Yes there might be a few things that can slightly increase the odds of winning, but it is not like there is a holy bible that you can read and then be in profit as if there was a rule set that you only have to follow and all other things fall into place automatically. It remains a luck thing and it usually is a losing activity over a longer period of time no matter what theoretical knowledge you are accumulating.
Maybe what is meant is knowledge about how to properly analyze a number of teams that will compete by looking at the available statistical data and if that is indeed what is meant then yes of course that is how sports betting is but of course I also agree with the idea that skills and knowledge are not something that guarantees victory, it is nothing more than a tool to increase chances but does not guarantee that you will win at that time, in the end luck is still an important factor but skills also help to increase the chances of winning, and well if we talk about other types of games besides skill-based bets such as slot machines then of course there is no way and no knowledge that can influence the results in the game.
I think the more obvious something is about a certain game, the less advantage will there be in terms of identifying favorable odds. Especially in sports betting in very popular sports, there isn't usually much of an advantage that you can gather by processing additional information. most of the important aspects are known beforehand and sometimes you might be able to find good odds when the game is live because you have a different opinion about certain adjustments the bookmakers might do during the games.
Then I think there are certain offers that make more sense than others to bet on, but you can see that this is mostly a question of preferences. Some prefer to go with 3-way results most of the time, some prefer bets like BTTS and some prefer over/under.
I think it was a few weeks ago when I went with the top favorites only in all leagues and none of the three teams won their game. No rules or theoretical knowledge would have helped, it is the variance that you face whenever you gamble.
So again I think having good knowledge about a sport can help and otherwise it doesn't make a lot of sense to place bets if you have no idea at all about what you are doing, but no matter how well you know a league, you'll be wrong about the outcome more often than you think. Just do the test, take one league and fill in the results for every single match day and see how many of the results you actually get wrong. It is astonishing because so often it seems to be the easiest pick ever and than some superior team fails again. It reminds me of Liverpool losing against Nottingham at home. Or the bad streak that Manchester City went through, I bet that a lot of people lost money because of Manchester City for months now. Whatever theoretical knowledge they have, they lost money because nobody goes against Manchester City for like ten games or so.
