Books won't make anyone overcome the house on long term. There are people selling books about gambling subject, but they aren't different from the coaches who sell books teaching people on how to become millionaires. These guys are profiting from the books sales, while not giving any guarantees to the ones who purchased their products. Information about gambling is available on the internet. You don't need to read books to understand how it works and what you should expect from it.

I think the mistake here is to believe loss is being faced because there isn't enough knowledge absorbed from books by the gambler. General and updated knowledge about teams, players and championships must be more effective than reading books about gambling.

Well, knowledge is very important in gambling. And reading some gambling stories can be helpful in gaining ideas on what will possibly happen to us. But all of these things are nothing if we never believe them and follow their advice. For me, gambling is not all about having learned the strategies but also having learned how to control ourselves. Many gamblers are wondering why they lose despite having enough knowledge; it is because we are not lucky today. Very unfortunate that most gamblers don't understand this and their position.
Here, many of us make the first mistake, which is to consider gambling as an investment or money-generating source. And that's why we often get quickly affected by the promotions of many influencers or others on social media, who will give gambling-related signals and by following those signals, we can easily win at gambling.
If we think a little deeper, it will become much clearer to us that is it really possible to win in gambling by reading signals or books? And if it was possible, do you think this industry could still sustain in the market? No, if it was really possible, then most of the online casinos would have become bankrupt and become invisible from the market.

Recently, a friend of mine approached me with a question about what he should read about gambling. He read a lot of specialized forums and looked at information on websites, but he was not satisfied. He started betting on sports not so long ago, but began to lose a lot and realized that he had a significant lack of theoretical knowledge. He loves books and believes that only books present knowledge systematically, and not chaotically, as on many websites. But his question stumped me. Although I have read some books on sports betting, poker and other games, I do not know what specifically to advise a beginner. What books would you recommend?

At the very beginning, when I just started to get acquainted with gambling, I came across a book at a book flea market, but it was mostly theory and it was presented rather boringly, so I looked for all the necessary information on the Internet. For me, it was a trial and error method, from the very beginning I chose that it would be sports betting, I studied the essence of betting in the line and I only had to decide what would work for me. But I will say that betting is not an activity for everyone, it is very difficult to win here.
I have already mentioned here that gambling is completely dependent on luck and no book or guide in the world can help you win at gambling. If their title above is that they will help you win, then you have to understand that when you apply their instructions in real life, you will see that the amount of your losses has increased.

Generally, it's wrong to accept gambling books or contents that's filled with winning strategies. Most authors do that to garners buyers and generate more money. Good books on gaming teaches about responsible gambling and the ability to maintain low expenses. Because the writers of helpful casino works knows that management of funds reduces the rate at which a player would want to chase after losses, so they build concrete information that proves to the reader the need to change how they've been looking at gambling. Expecially those who were convinced of turning their life around (financially) through gambling.

And I think that even if they don't increase my chances of winning, they will keep my losses within a certain limit.

I have never read a book on gambling, but i have tried betting in some sports, experience is terrible but once you know the game in and out, then we might get a hang of it
as this can make a man earn more money or more loss
My brother it's like you're new to gambling and just having a winning streak. With this response I don't think you understand gambling enough. There's nobody that can grasp a perfect knowledge in gambling. Gambling is dependent on our luck because even the P2P games like poker, it's possible that you'll meet a stronger opponent one day or in series of sessions and lose your stake. So there's no knowing the games in and out. It's advised to gamble responsibility and stake amounts that you can afford to lose, else you might be heading straight into addiction unknowingly to you.

Very good topic, maybe it will make many players think about the fact that they play gambling without much knowledge, they just learned or heard something and started playing, and this is clearly not enough to earn money in this difficult occupation. By the way, I also did not read any books about gambling, watched several videos on YouTube, read forums about how other players play and decided that this may be enough to be successful in gambling, but obviously this is not so, because I can not win, my bankroll is slowly decreasing.
Gambling usually does not require any special kind of knowledge to play and win, and by gambling, I mean actual gambling like playing casino and slot games, and other games based on pure luck.. But then, reading books on this topic can actually teach the basics, like how we can maintain a good gambling habit like practising responsible gambling and all that, what we know as a knowledge in this regard does not contribute anything to our winning or losing games, since this is purely based on luck, but can only help us not become addicted gamblers.

And talking about sports betting, some book knowledge can help here, but it's on the basic level, sports is very dynamic and change from time to time as player leave and players come in, I've talked about this in my previous comments on this thread.
So, book knowledge about sports betting can only teach the basics of betting, it doesn't not help in any way when it comes to choosing a team to place bets on, this will always be based on latest information you (the bettor) have on the team playing.

I can recommend Annie Duke's book "The Betting Principle" for study. This book provides many practical examples from the lives of professional poker players.

The author also compares poker to stock market trading (though he likes poker much more than stock trading).

I am also currently reading Joe Peta's book "Trading Bases: Wall Street, Gambling, and Baseball". The author writes very interestingly and wittily. The author spent many years on Wall Street and learned a lot there. After finishing his career as an investment banker and trader, he became interested in sports betting (baseball).

At the same time, he achieved great success in gambling, despite the fact that this is a new field of activity for him. As a result, he decided to share his experience with the readers of his book. I really like this book.

Gambling is not like trading where a particular pattern can work for a very long time, in gambling, things change very quickly, and like I said in my previous comment, a book written even 2 to 3 years ago does not apply to what gambling might be today, because things must have changed, some players must have retired, while some new players must have risen up that are not captured in the book we read.

So, the nutshell is, to become good in sports knowledge to increase one's chances of winning bets most of the time, it's best to stay with currents updates, stay immensed in latest events rather than depend on book that written years ago with already outdated information.

Sports betting can be profitable and can make us, or can be unprofitable and break us, our experience depends greatly on our approach.

Honestly there is no such thing as reading books to increase chances of winning in gambling that is so unrealistic and hilarious, what increases our chances of being knowledgeable in gambling though it doesn't guarantee winning but only helps in getting to know about what goes around in the gambling environment is staying long in the system, no one was born with gambling knowledge and it all started one day, but any thinking that reading books will increase chances of winning in gambling is only deceiving himself, winning only comes as a result of being lucky over your prediction or predictions, and completely has nothing to do with reading books or how long one has being in the system.

When I earlier started sports betting, one day me and my cousin visited the bookie shop and he was looking at the league table that was pasted on wall of that shop and then he began to jot down his prediction as he was looking at the table. That was where I asked him a question and the question was, "how do you normally know which teach will win and the one that will lose by just looking at that list on the wall? "

He then explain to me that the list he is looking at comprises of the performance of the same teams in their previous match  and also the changes in players or injuries sustained by player during their previous match.

So, since I started gambling, I have not read any book to learn how to gamble, I only saw what my cousins was doing and also what my friends were doing and I followed them and with time, I was used to how to make my own prediction and it was more easier because I love sport games and I was regularly watching the sports news, sport events and various matches.

If you explain the process for him, he can pick up from there, he doesn't necessarily need to read any book before he can start gambling. Since he is betting on sports games, he should follow up with sport events, news, changes in team he love to bet on.

Gambling books are a great source of information for those who want to become better gamblers. These books are filled with plenty of real life examples to give readers a deeper insight into how gambling works. But whichever book you read remember that gambling is all about luck. So no strategy guarantees success in the casino. Fortunately, josh appelbaum doesn't let that happen in the everything guide to sports betting. This book contains tips and tricks to help you place a strategic sports bet. There are many books where you will find basic and advanced techniques and different terminology used for each game.
In the modern era like today, I think books are starting to be abandoned and more people are inclined to start looking for information on the internet because it can be more flexible and fast, but even so, the information in books and on the internet is only theoretical and those of us who read it must really understand if every information that exists is not always in accordance with when we play,  In my opinion, sports betting does require a deep understanding of the sport itself, as well as a good and clear betting strategy that is be very rare from books, because indeed the development of the team and the sport continues to run according to the development of the era, so you must to develop games or predictions in a different situation than what is in the book or the internet.
Agree with your thought. Regarding sports, I think it is not possible to get good information about it by reading books. Only those who have mature strategies can win. Particularly those who have good knowledge about sports will get relatively good results in sports betting. Although luck is also an important factor in it. I do not think that those who will research books only for information or only collect data and bet accordingly will get very good results. If a bettor has good skills about a specific sport, then if he researches various information's well in online and takes decisions, then his winnings can increase. If there is a combination of both real experience and information, good results can be expected.

what exactly was he looking for? a simple search on Google would give him a lot of books catered to new gamblers, he could even use ChatGPT if he wanted to look for a more specific book. personally, I haven't really read books about gambling, all I've learned came from personal experience, reading through this forum(and others) and articles that I come across or look for because of curiosity.

There's no need to be upset

I have been gambling for the past 8-9 years but never read any books regarding gambling. I don’t know about others, but yes, I believe practical knowledge is more important than theoretical knowledge when it comes to gambling. But yes, I read about other people’s experiences with gambling losses and learn from their mistakes. When you are gambling, the most important thing you need to understand is the game rules and house edge of the particular game. Calculate the risk involved and gamble in the budget. As a newbie, if these things are maintained, then definitely he can make a profit.

It’s interesting how you don’t need theory to be a good gambler (or even to be good with other skills), though a little bit of theory never hurts

One book that I like that is not exactly about gambling but includes some of the concepts is “thinking in bets” by Anne Duke

Have you read it?
She says that life is more like poker than chess. Its a good book

I haven't read any gambling related books myself as I never felt the need.
On the other hand, it's good to grasp all the knowledge that you can if you are thinking to start betting.
So researching about it and getting to know all the pros and cons and strategies is a good idea.

A basic search on Chat GPT landed these results so I guess you should have asked Chat GPT the same question  Grin

If you depend on books to win in sports betting, then sorry to say this, but you will likely remain a loser for as long as you Gamble, finding knowledge in sports for the purpose of betting in sports and winning has nothing to do with knowledge contained in a written book. Do not forget that that outcome of sports match's is dynamical, dynamical in the sense that team A and team B can play today, and team A would win, and by next week, the same team A and team B can meet again to play, and team B will end up winning this time.

Now, imagine reading a book that was written 10, 15 or 20 years ago on sports, to find knowledge in sports today when things have completely changed, games are no longer played as they used to, players have respectively improved, and some have retired, how do you think you can win bets like this?

If you want to gain knowledge in sports, better start reading latest news on sports, both online and offline, take out time to watch live sports games to gain first hand experience on players and their performance, this are the few processes to gaining proper knowledge in sports and increasing one's chances of winning bets on sports.
