Even in the rare case some gambler manages to break even, if they are addicted, they would continue to find another reason to continue to gamble that same day, without pause. They could tell to themselves that since they managed to break even then luck in their side that day, and it would be foolish to waste that luck, so they continue to gamble.
It is a lot of coping and self-delusion for them not to feel bad, but we all know that such perpetual circle or lies and losses cannot be perpetuated forever, the person will break down eventually and hit rock bottom.
Ideally, they are not supposed to hit rock bottom before seeking for help, though.
That is why they must be able to remain aware of their gambling activities so that they do not experience even greater losses. Yes, they do need to get help before things get messy.
