If you are a citizen of a country, you need to obey country laws. You can work to change the laws. But you need to obey the laws, whatever they are.
Regarding the USA, if you are a man or a woman, and are not acting in citizen capacity, you can have as many husbands or wives as you want. However, the moment you accept the USA accusation that you have more than one, you have accepted the definition of "marriage" according to the USA under citizenship, and that you are a citizen. This is why there is such a thing called consent in a relationship. And if you consent to act like you are married, as a man or woman the laws don't affect you, but as a citizen they do.
This whole thing is tricky. If you are married to more than one, you must never state in legal terms that you are so married. If you do, you are going against the law, whereas you are not otherwise.
Note this. One of the Spanish words for "wife" is "esposa." But if you add an "s" to make it plural, the meaning changes to "handcuffs" or "shackles."
