This is the reality, even though in a moment that we all know that altcoins is too risky but still we will buy cause one thing for sure that once the price will go up then profit is on the way. Anyways we can see many people around the globe who are aiming to have altcoins even though they failed before but still they will buy altcoins. But their main investment is Bitcoin cause we all know how Bitcoin work less risky and good profit in the future.
Probably because of the diversity of the altcoins I guess. 
The reason why people develops fast interest on altcoin is because they believe they can make quick gains in investing altcoins. Human as the nature of making money quick , since altcoin is a short term investment people will want to invest to make quick gains. This mentality of making quick money has really led people in going into wrong investments that didn't last that all money was lost. It is important people needs to find out more about a coin before going intoit for investment.
Investing in wrong projects will see the end of joyful moments an bring terrible events. Altcoins ruled the market and they don't have season because they follow the appropriate steps of bitcoin which is entirely the top project in the market. I've seen altcoins put smile on the face of top whales in the space and it will continue to triggered more joy and enjoyable moments. Who doesn't like earning fast cool cash from the market? Answer me, who? Absolutely nobody, you know why, it's because entering into the market, the first thing that comes to the mind is ensuring to accumulate more profits.As it is the intention why you are entiring the market, it's all about profits, no one in the right mind that will say that they are investing or trading because they wanted to lose their money right? It's just the same with any other investment, alt coin is being supported by investors and traders as they are seeing opportunity to earn money.
That desire keeps them to find right project to invest their money, some may succeed but the percentage will always small compared to those who will going to lose, as you mentioned, whale is always around and they always have the upper hand.

I think learning to distinguish a good coin is fairly easy, eitherway if someone really do want to avoid the possibility of getting scammed they could just stick with investing on whatever available there in the big platforms like binance and coinbase, but the thing is that, with doing that they missed opportunity of making big profit from investing at the very early phase which honestly also have a risk of losing money because early phase is definitely the phase where the project is very volatile it could be successful or turning out to be a massive failure.regardless I think,we can agree that the reason people are so interested in altcoin mainly is because the profit just surpass the major coin like bitcoin and ethereum with smaller capital, thats why people are so interested in it even go as far as following and investing the coin that gets heavily manipulated and also trying to profit off some random meme coin just for the sake of turning life around which might make them lose all their money instead.
if its altcoin, just judge based on fundamental and utilities and you will get best of the best.

Bitcoin is the first choice for investment. And second choice is eth. If we see the chart of bitcoin, when it is pumping 5%. On the other hand, the altcoins are pumping 10%-20% and it is more profitable more than btc and eth. That's way, I also invest in altcoins.

OP if you think you will get more profit from alt coin investment than bitcoin investment then you definitely can. I will tell you of course you can invest in alt coin. But don't invest in wrong alt coin then your capital will be lost. Bitcoin is as risky as investing Similarly, alt coin can face losses if you can't invest at the right time.
Like you said Altcoins gives you a higher return of profit than what Bitcoin gives, depending cause at some point Bitcoin do gives very good profits that most of this Altcoins find it very difficult to. Many investors gets deceived by this huge profits promise made by this projects and invest wholesomely, sometimes it become and upliftment and some times turns regret. The problem is knowing which is the right or the wrong Altcoins every one of them comes out with coats of many colors that can be able to lure investors and most times you might have the personal conviction of that project to do well but might turn down and you bear a loss. buying altcoin isn't a bad thing and it definitely has its advantages and shortcomings, the only issue regarding buying or investing into altcoin is that you might invest into shit coin that wont be profitable to you in the long run and might make the mistake of holding on to it. Some could tell you altcoins are easily manipulated.. Oh well, I don't that except they have been buying shitcoins and are claiming to be alts..
For me, the reason I buy altcoin is to make profit and no, is not only Eth that is the only alt that does well. The likes of BGB, SOL, INJ etc are out there and are also giving people massive gains. So if you want to start buying alts, do well to do some research and know what you're getting into

as long as you know how to diversify properly and not focusing in Shitcoins ?
I believe that you will succeed in the bull market mate so better to keep that way , and just invest lower percentage in altcoins.
Everybody wants to make it in life thats why people take unnecessary risk just to make this money. Some were pretty lucky to buy altcoin suddenly it pump by 50x and they became millionaire and see altcoin as a get Rich quick scheme. Where as it was just a luck. Yes. Why most people invest in altcoin is because of the profit they make. Bitcoin looks dull in growth comepeard to altcoin. Altcoin serves as a fast way of increasing welth. Because it grows drastically with whooping amount of a higher percentage. Maybe 500 to1000% can be achieved in month on altcoin. But just like on binance now you'll notice that Bitcoin price is %126 in the past 3 years.
