If you ask me, the answer is quite simple. If we are to be honest with ourselves, we use crypto as a means of earning profits via speculation. So bitcoin won't be superseded unless and until some coin offers better profit opportunities than the rest of the pack (and bitcoin itself). Some coins may offer better short-term returns but over the long term bitcoin beats them all, and it is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.
