I think the question here should have been, "Will cryptocurrencies ever be fully accepted as a means of payment? ". I had to rephrase the question because there are a number of businesses that have started accepting cryptocurrencies for payment of goods and services. I am of the opinion that cryptocurrencies have really come a long way in 10 years. Widespread adoption should not be spoken of as if it can happen in days, these processes actually do take time.
I personally cannot wait for that time when I will be able to leverage on all the advantages offered by cryptocurrencies including a cost effective payment system.

Cryptocurrencies are already being used for payment. There are many gateways being used. I myself already paid for services using crypto, and it felt really nice!

Truly speaking its getting difficult day by day due to launch of many projects and altcoins. Everyone is using their own token and this reason I see at some extent will be show stopper for cryptocurrencies as use of payments.
Today I need for example some advertising on website and one project provides it with "X" coin and for my other requirement I go to another project which uses "Y" coin. So for me its not a friendly trade for all my requirements.

The problem only how good their marketing strategy to promote their token in order to attract more investor.

as long as the government has not legalized crypto, we will not be able to use crypto for legitimate payments. so the first thing to do is to make a regulation about crypto.

That is already working, for your information, cryptocurrencies goal is mainly to be used as a payment and to create transaction without so much ease on it. Just trust Cryptos, and your payment would be easy.
Its not a statement to be hoped for but already it is happening in countries where cryptocurrency is legal and has been made to function there so it s no longer and imagination but its reality
