I think Messi will be playing against a much opened Croatia who will have their chances of qualifying,they are divided only by 1 goal with Mbappe 5 and Messi 4 so it is only natural the golden boot to be one of them,I would love to see a final between Argentina and France in order to see a direct clash between them,personally I think Messi deserves it more than Mbappe.

I'm not good at predicting but I'm sure Mbappe will add another goal in the match against England later in the quarter-finals, I think the France vs England match will have a lot of goals scored, Messi won't be able to catch up with that of course if Argentina loses against the Netherlands later

I don't think Messi will find it very easy scoring to meet up with Mbappe in the next match. The Dutch side is not going to be free scoring for Argentina because they only conceive one goal from the group stage and they top the table with 7 points, they have good forward to attack the Argentina defence on counter if they open up any such opportunity. So Messi will get difficulty in scoring freely.
The four players that are on equal goals are from countries capable of being the world cup winners but I think the top goal scorer will be determined by the performance of the best two countries that may likely play the final of the game. I think Messi needs just one goal to pass the legend Batistuta who is the top goal scorer for Argentina and I think Messi will score against the Netherlands as they are not well known for having a solid defense,that was always their Achilles's heel where they suffered a lot from the not so good defending.Argentina is well known for scoring goals and most probably will score against Netherlands with Messi having a really high chance of becoming the best goal scorer as I think Mbappe will have difficulties to score that easily against England but we will see.

In Messi's several matches with Argentina in this world cup, he had many opportunities that could not be converted into goals. one of them, when he had a chance at the penalty spot against Poland. he failed, at least, Messi has 2-4 shots on target every game.
