I agree he is still making cables, but not the kind this post was for.  I know people are going to be looking for an alternative, so why not post one in the place people are looking for it?

I was hoping Cablez would come through for us, but given that is not going to happen, I would like to offer my services.  I have prepared with a supplier in China all of the cables necessary to power a USB hub, a Pi/controller, and 12 Gridseeds in scrypt-mode using 1 6-pin PCIe and 2 molex connectors all on a regular ATX power supply.  I am calling it the Gridseed Power Pack, and I am selling it for $40 on my website at:

Well this is not the post that I had dreamed of or wanted to write up.  After two days of negotiations with two different companies (post quote) I see now that I cannot produce a quality product on a more reasonable timeline and cost than my newly joined competitors.  It is a sad day for me twofold as one, I pride myself on doing a quality job for cheaper than most and two, my desire to help the mining community progress has been one of my main tenets since getting involved in Bitcoin.

As it stands now I will not be getting my gridseed cable designs mass produced as they would be delayed by several weeks at best and have a unit cost far more than even I would be willing to pay retail on top of the miner cost. With outlays upwards of $20k I just am not in a position to take on that much risk. I apologize to all who have shown interest in my gridseed cables for letting you down but at least there seem to be alternatives available.

The other sources use a similar design to mine and they should be ready much sooner. I do not advocate for them as I only trust my own work so please be attentive to detail.


I will still offer up my services for custom work if you would like and I will have some small batches of various mining cables available shortly.

As a quick solution I am thinking of taking the modular cables from my AX1200i and cutting off the PCIe connector then using those 2.1mm x 5.5mm DC barrel plug adaptors. 3 per PCIe connector for now....may look for 5 way splitters later.

...but I can seem to find any specs on them. How do I make sure they are at least 6A or more?

Hey Cablez I've got a question:

where did you come up with the 60W per wire pair?
all the documentation I can find says PCIe spec is 2.3 amps for 18AWG wire so at 12V that would be about 25W per wire pair.

Actually the 60w is a conservative number. Back in the Bitcoin FPGA days I routinely ran 80-85w per wire pair in a PCIe, those BFL devices were such power hogs. Smiley

The PCIe spec is very very conservative mostly due to the fact that pcb design can hit power limitations far faster than free wires/connectors.

That being said, the first limitation you will hit for power adapters is on the PCIe pins which are typically rated for 9A but are all supposed to be 'HCS' since 2005 so they should be rated at 11A. I wouldn't push it that far though. The next limitation would be the 18AWG wire itself which is rated for 10A in short runs. Finally, the last limitation is the barrel plugs themselves which come in a whole host of ratings but I typically go for the 6 or 7A ones to be safe.

How many units can 1 pci-e cable power safely for scrypt mode?  Also how many can you power from molex?

If you are looking to be conservative I would say 60w per wire pair within the PCIe connector. At roughly 10w per device that is 6 units per wire pair and 18 units total, conservatively. It is possible to go up to 80w per wire pair but that just stresses the housings, pins and wires and will yield lower MTBF rates.

Looking at a molex 'chain' there is only a single 12v wire pair to be utilized there but it is shared. This is going to limit you to 60w on the entire 'chain' (usually 3 molex plugs and a floppy).

This is also made without knowledge of the Hub and controllers power consumption so I just counted them for 10w to have a number.
Also: I made this with your molex to USB power connectors in mind. That's why all the controllers are counted into the one molex link.

Am I right in thinking this is possible?
and if so: will you be supplying cables to do this kind of stuff?
(for example: cables that go from Sata power to either 5x 2.1mm or just to 2.1mm so you can plug in an extension for 5?)

Cablez are you selling Adapters for the Gridseeds? What size jack do they use? Just a standard 2.5mm DC?

I will be selling adapters for the gridseeds very soon.  I will have a finalized quote tomorrow which I intend to just turnaround and pay for expedited work. Things are finally moving forward, Yay!

The jack can be either 2.5mm or 2.1mm. It has been decided that the 2.1mm plugs fit better in the device than the 2.5mm ones even though both work.
