Yes, create a new wallet, preferably on an offline computer, write down the seed words it gives you, and write down the public address it gives you. That is your paper wallet. Send to the wallet using the public address. Use the seed words to access the coins from it by creating a new online wallet with the '--restore-deterministic' option.

Wow, great explanation! Though I knew about the deterministic option, I somehow thought that XMR has no such thing as paper wallet.
Now... let's push my luck.. and is there any way to actually know how much is on a paper wallet without restoring it and going online? (my guess is "no", but I already guessed wrong once).

I need to crash. Fluffypony and the other devs will be up soon and will continue diagnosing it.

My guess it that it's a buffer underflow/overflow code relating to the merkle tree code, but I'm not entirely sure. The crazy block that broke the network had the following idiosyncrasies:
- Normal coinbase
- 510 tx with 0.0000000000001 inputs and 0.000000000000 outputs (effective fee 0.000000000001)
- 2 tx at the end of the block with 2.0 inputs and 1.9999999999999 outputs

--> 513 tx total included, possibly overflowing a value related to the merkle tree tx calculation somewhere (for instance, if a binary merkle tree has two branches which are allowed to contain 256 tx each, and then when you get over 512 something bad happens, eg memory access somewhere there shouldn't be)

Now, the outputs of 0.0000000000001 that were used were produced 4 days ago, so it looks like the attackers were well aware of the bug, but needed to expand the block size to get all these outputs into a single block. To do so, they emulated normal pool payout transactions but added high mixin and tx_extra content to bloat the tx. These transactions were otherwise indistinguishable from pool tx payouts, aside from occasionally using strangely large inputs. To not raise suspicion, the tx mempool was not flooded by tx, but rather 4-10 new tx were submitted whenever a new block entered the network (so that the mempool didn't look suspiciously large). Our course, we recognized these as bizarre ealier in the day and were watching the blockchain like a hawk.

Overall, it appears it was an extremely well coordinated attack to exploit an unexpected engineering flaw in the handling of merkle trees. I still don't understand why it happened, but I'm already up way too late and I need to get some sleep.

Someone will pick up where I left off.

Panic !!! XMR Broken!!!

Can this attack/problem happen to BBR as well??

We don't know it is still being diagnosed. If we find anything that applies to other coins, we will pass it on to them. Even the ones we hate (which does not include BBR).

What happened yallz?

links anyone?

Edit - DO NOT send fromany exchange to your cold wallet/offline wallet, UNLESS they can give you the TXID for the monero blockchain verification, otherwise you have no way of verifying the transfer. (Correct me all night guys if i'm wrong and thanks to all for the help lately, especially smooth and fluffypony)!

You are correct. Complain to the exchange if they won't give you a txid.

However, if you are truly paranoid, even a txid isn't good enough enough because you can't verify that the correct amount is going to your address. Best to withdraw from the exchange to a live wallet, verify the correctness of the transaction, and then send to a cold wallet yourself.

This will be addressed with the view key functionality, eventually.  You will be able to observe and verify the transactions into your cold wallet online without you or anyone else being able to spend from it.

Is there a paper wallet available like there is for BTC/LTC/etc.?

Yes, create a new wallet, preferably on an offline computer, write down the seed words it gives you, and write down the public address it gives you. That is your paper wallet. Send to the wallet using the public address. Use the seed words to access the coins from it by creating a new online wallet with the '--restore-deterministic' option.

I've only seen something command line. Waiting for the GUI before I can move funds off the exchange though - especially in light of your post. (Had problems installing wallet on MAC due to libraries, so holding off for now.)

Thanks in advance,
IAS

Don't panic - monero is a pretty young currency, so things like this were to be anticipated. Just pay the devs a good coin and wait for a proper solution - and of course get your btc ready for buying cheap moneros soon.
