Does this mean I have to stop my sync before 2210720 and wait for 17.2?
Don't tell me to compile, ain't happening

The sync will stop automatically at that block. In order to sync past that block, you will have to use the version that includes the fix, which will be released shortly.

Well, then the DEV's and the monero community have to release 17.2.0 for GUI and CLI quite urgently in my opinion

I can connect my wallet to my private node without any problems, but on my personal PC i am stuck at block 2210720 following message being delivered all the time

Code:
2020-10-18 14:13:51.983 I [51.79.173.165:18080 OUT] Sync data returned a new top block candidate: 2210720 -> 2211044 [Your node is 324 blocks (10.8 hours) behind]
2020-10-18 14:13:51.983 I SYNCHRONIZATION started
2020-10-18 14:13:53.827 W monerod is now disconnected from the network

Release binaries that include the fix will follow shortly.

Note to devs:  test the edge cases before you release a mandated fork.

Only monerod (node) has to update, wallets don't need to be updated. It'll be released in a few hours.

Thanks for the link dEBRUYNE. Not good, fortunately the already online nodes are not affected.
The fix is in https://github.com/monero-project/monero/pull/6906 - you can compile it yourself or wait for v0.17.2.0 release.

^ You are running the latest version 0.17.1.0. I assume you are not connected to a remote node (which might be stuck on the old chain)?

Maybe try and delete p2pstate.bin

You might want to restart your node birr in case your node still hasn’t seen a new block yet. The current latest one is 2210773:

https://xmrchain.net/block/2210773
I exited the daemon and restarted.  Looks a little better, at least the status shows the new block height.  Waiting to see what happens.

edit: nope

Code:
status
Height: 2210720/2210783 (99.9%) on mainnet, not mining, net hash 1.47 GH/s, v14, 7(out)+0(in) connections, uptime 0d 0h 0m 28s
2020-10-18 05:55:40.044 W There were 0 blocks in the last 90 minutes, there might be large hash rate changes, or we might be partitioned, cut off from the Monero network or under attack, or your computer's time is off. Or it could be just sheer bad luck.

‘Network Upgrade’ (hard fork) successful!

yeah, according to your link it supposed to happen on block 2210720, looks like it did.  I'm running 0.17.1.0

Code:
2020-10-18 05:16:51.049	I [104.140.244.186:18080 OUT] Sync data returned a new top block candidate: 2210720 -> 2210766

still waiting for the new chain to get started, the old one is now at 2210766.  Makes me nervous.

the coin merge problem

I haven't heard about coin merge.  Googling monero coin merge returns "Leveraging Output Merging" on the Monero wikipedia page and some stuff about merge mining.
Can you post a link or a few words of explanation?

BTW. good to see you here, been a while, hope you are well. Cool

Thanks.  Same to you. :-)

What the fuck is this bullshit FUD???

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monero_(cryptocurrency)

Wikipedia is a stunningly successful outlet for mass propaganda under colour of facts.  Its so-called “neutral point of view” is anything but; and although its articles on some mathematical or scientific subjects have attained a decent quality, I would not rely on it for anything politically controversial in any way.

If Wikipedia is smearing Monero, I am not surprised.

coinomi XMR i think is not centralized  Huh

coinomi  XMR privacy ?

I was mistaken about Coinomi being custodial; I will correct my earlier post accordingly.  However, Coinomi is still not recommended:

“Last edit: September 17, 2020, 08:25:29 AM by Lauda”
Not recommended or outdated Wallets

[...]

  • Coinomi — Initially open source, then changed again to closed source. Had controversial situations in the past. More information can be found here

From the linked thread, which is quite recent:

[...]

[...] All users of Coinomi have to have complete trust in both your programming skills and your honesty.

The oft repeated mantra of "Don't trust. Verify." is apt here. With closed source software, it is impossible to verify, and you are forced to trust. Why will you not transition to open source?

Quote
Due to its privacy features, Monero experienced rapid growth in market capitalization and transaction volume during 2016, faster and bigger than any other cryptocurrency that year. This growth was driven by its uptake in the darknet market, where people used it to buy stolen credit cards, guns, and drugs.[3] Two major darknet markets were shut down in July 2017 by law enforcement.[6] From the beginning, Monero has been used by people holding other cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin to break the link between transactions, with the other cryptocoins first converted to Monero, then after some delay converted back and sent to an address unrelated to those used before.

Quote
After many online payment platforms shut down access for white nationalists following the Unite the Right rally in 2017, some of them, including Christopher Cantwell and Andrew Auernheimer ("weev"), started using and promoting Monero.[8][9]

The operators behind the May 2017 global ransomware incident WannaCry converted their proceeds into Monero.[2] In June, The Shadow Brokers, the group that leaked the code used in WannaCry, started accepting payments in Monero.[2]

Looks like Wiki is being used to rewrite history with a pretty obvious spin.

‘Network Upgrade’ (hard fork) successful!
Well, such positive news will attract and nudge new members who appreciate the privacy that Monero provides. Moreover, the work done was not in vain, in particular, it was shown by the successful launch of hard fork.

I myself refused to touch XMR until it had both CT and minimum ring sizes.  I don’t think that it was a worthwhile privacy coin before 2017, at the earliest.  Bigger ring sizes, and better selection of mixins, have been only some of the important changes since then, in terms of privacy.  (Bulletproofs and RandomX are important for other reasons.)

This is not to express negativity toward Monero, but rather, to say:  Never stop improving!  MRL’s work is an important part of the Monero value proposition.  A better solution to the coin merge problem would be excellent; I think that it would go a long way toward preventing probabilistic clustering, à la CipherTrace.

My perspective:  I lost out big time by avoiding Bitcoin for years, due to its abject lack of privacy.

I can't believe this was my first forum post. Not even about btc, but XMR! I made my account in april that year I believe, so I had been already lurking for a couple months LOL.  Cool

weird, for some reason on the wallet page it says disabled and the link is removed to the market. no way to withdraw though, just buy/sell.. Sad

Congrats.  Your permanent blockchain records are probably at least a little bit less revealing than most people’s. ;-)

yeah, but I don't really care. I pay my taxes. Cool

I got into Monero because the code is solid and I was new and looking at future alternatives, also a friend who was better at code than I tipped me off that it would be a great coin someday. I guess I lucked out, but hey, timing is everything as well, so I could have done a lot better LOL. Dont ever feel bad about missing out - I've lost a Gold Cas coin worth 14k at the time due to sloppy packaging, also a copy paste virus that scammed me a few thousand a few weeks later, so I know what real loss feels like, trust me there!  Tongue

BTW. good to see you here, been a while, hope you are well. Cool

I prefer to think common people are starting to protect their privacy. May be it's just wishfull thinking. Grin

i try send from binance to my coinomi

:-/

Edit 2020-10-17:  Correction for reasons stated here (but Coinomi is still not recommended).

From centralized exchange...
...to centralized exchange.

Not your keys, not your coins—and you have no privacy!

I do hope that you get “your” Binance’s money “back”, if they will be so magnanimous as to let you have it.  Please try keeping it in your own wallet.
