Monero v0.9.2 - Hydrogen Helix - released! (Urgent and important bug fixes for the upcoming hard fork)

https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/releases/tag/v0.9.2

What do I need to do to upgrade from  v0.9.1?  Delete everything and start from scratch, or can I save the blockchain (was a bitch to sync with my spotty connection).  Or should I wait until next week?

EDIT:
downloaded windows version, unzipped to a new location.  Copied  wallet and keys files over from old folder, and simplewallet seems fine with that.  started daemon, and it seems to have found the database without issue (where the hell did windows put it?), as it synced immediately.  Can I delete the 0.9.1 folder completely?

You could have just just unzipped it to the folder you had 0.9.1 in.  It will write over the necessary files.

"(where the hell did windows put it?)"  It usually defaults to downloads but you can select "browse" and place it anywhere you want, again where you had the version you are updating from.
He probably asks, where the database is stored  Smiley
In Windows the place is...  C:\ProgramData\bitmonero

Not sure if this has been posted here, but monero is mentioned in this article as way of anonymizing Bitcoin transactions

Fancied up the countdown timer at http://myrcraft.com/xmr.html so that it actually has a moving clock now (yay javascript!).

Thank you, but "Blocks until halving" Huh

Yes but make sure you don't delete any wallet files.

Information from Github:

This has urgent and important bug fixes to 0.9.0 Hydrogen Helix
  • Major performance and size improvements to the LMDB database implementation
  • Urgent and important bug fixes for the upcoming hard fork
  • Huge bug fixes to the database hard fork handling
  • New simplewallet flag to restore from keys
  • Initial work on a wallet library / API
  • Updated in-source block headers

General hardfork information:

Background:

https://forum.getmonero.org/4/academic-and-technical/303/a-formal-approach-towards-better-hard-fork-management

Quote
What are the change(s) with the upcoming hard fork on the 20th of March?

  • Blocktime is bumped from 1 to 2 minutes. See:

https://forum.getmonero.org/20/general-discussion/2401/increasing-the-block-time

  • Minimum blocksize is bumped to 60 KB. See:

https://forum.getmonero.org/20/general-discussion/2409/increasing-the-minimum-block-size

A big advantage of this is that current individual transactions that sometimes won't go through (because they are a bit above the median due to many outputs (e.g. dust), or the daemon / MyMonero rejects them for some reason) can easily be included in the block without incurring a penalty. Above is a bit of a blunt explanation, I am sure one of the core-team members / developers could give you a more detailed explanation.

  • Finally, the recommendations from the MRL team stated in MRL-0004, of which the minimum mixin >= 3 is probably the most salient. See:

https://lab.getmonero.org/pubs/MRL-0004.pdf

P.S. Due to variance the hard fork will likely be on the 21th or 22th of March. A specific block height was determined for the hardfork, not a specific date. The specific blockheight for the hardfork can be found here:

https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero/blob/master/src/cryptonote_core/blockchain.cpp#L83

Keep what's important, and know who's your friend
MONERO MADNESS

Hey guys, decided it might be fun for some of us who would like to try our luck in picking out our own brackets for March Madness this year!  Since probably everyone on here (including my self) doesn't really keep up with college basketball (in the U.S.), I decided it would be equally as fair to win some Monero and will make it somewhat enjoyable/interesting to watch a game if someone has it on their T.V. at a friends house or out to eat at some bar.

So here's what I'm thinking:

1 entry per user
10 XMR to play  ... ?? Up for discussion ??
Figured going through ESPN.com would be easiest to set up our brackets (very simple to sign up a username)

Since ESPN doesn't allow gambling, I figured we will just trust each other to pay up at the end of the bracket.  If you would like to play, sign up on ESPN and message me on either of the ANN or speculation threads or PM me.

Group Name: Monero
Password: blockchain  ... (didn't know what else to put)

Here's a direct link:

Let me know if you guys are interested or not! Should be fun if we get a couple players to throw in 10 (or so) XMR.  Maybe the best dudero win  Grin

That's pretty much the same as Bitcoin, right? If you have your private key, you can always recover your coins but with your wallet.dat you'll get the metadata such as labels on keys or transactions.

Similar, yes. The idea of metadata as opposed to coin recovery is the same. The main thing that is different here is that the metadata includes the tx private keys (for transactions you made). Those don't exist in Bitcoin and are needed if you ever have to prove that you made a payment.

Well articulated as always, smooth.

Guys, i would have a technical question.
Is a newly generated wallett in 0.91 fully encrypted  Roll Eyes

Yes assuming you use a password (ideally a good one).

Okidoki, thanks  Grin

I would suggest
Code:
abc123
as a password. It's a good one.  Wink

In all seriousness you can make a password REALLY long (like 100+ random characters) and just recover with your seed words instead as needed.

If you want to use your password in the future of course you need to actually record it.

This is not quite true any more. You will recover your coins, but the wallet data file now contains logging data about your transactions along with your per-tx keys (which can be used to prove payment) so you should now keep that file safe, and probably back it up. These can not be recovered even with the seed words.

But like I said, you can still always recover your coins with just the seed words.

Flippin' burgers since 1163.
Support the Monero network by hiring a pre-installed full node for just 4$ / month

I might be interested, but to be frank... I'm still trying to set up my computer to run Linux.  I haven't had much time to mess with it, but when I do I'd be willing to pay for it and use that.

Cool, just let me know.

You (or anyone else) still have five days to decide before the node expires. So you can buy more time setting up your own node by extending the current one for a month Wink.

Hello, Guys,

I'm looking for major XMR holders for the purpose of doing OTC(over the counter) deals to acquire this currency without moving market prices at exchanges.
I'll start buying April/May on behalf of my clients and continue to do so for at least a year.

If you are interested, send me a pm or an email, with these details:
Minimum amount i could buy from you, maximum amount i could buy in one operation, your preferred payment method and how to get in touch with you.

You probably have better luck asking in our speculation thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=753252.14840

There is also #monero-otc on freenode.
