Support the Monero network by hiring a pre-installed full node for just 4$ / month

Recently I switched provider (more expensive, higher specs for simultaneously running a Bitcoin node) and I was wondering what to do with my current Monero node. It hurts a bit to just let it go, especially because it just runs great and is cheap. It is hosted at MikroVPS.eu for 4$ per month and they accept bitcoin (and so Monero through XMR.to).

So I was thinking there may be more users like me (I struggled hard but had great help from the community), who would like to support the Monero network but are not that much experienced configuring a Linux server. Therefore I would like to check if there is any interest in extending a fully hosted Monero node:

You can pay the equivalent of 4$ in Monero or Bitcoin, and the node will run for another whole month. You can check whether it is online here (just zoom in a little bit) since it is the only node running in the area.

Specs of the node, still valid till 2016-03-21
- 25 GB harddisk
- 512 MB RAM
- 250 GB bandwidth
- Ubuntu Linux 15.10 x64
- IP: 185.112.158.127

The Monero node is running from Hungaria, Budapest and is nicely filling up a gap on the map of Europe:

Some statistics of the last few weeks:

Bitcoin address: 1B3cZEg1oGnXpgjhkTJGpP9G4LNPWTXk1D

I might be interested, but to be frank... I'm still trying to set up my computer to run Linux.  I haven't had much time to mess with it, but when I do I'd be willing to pay for it and use that.

Hello, Guys,

I'm looking for major XMR holders for the purpose of doing OTC(over the counter) deals to acquire this currency without moving market prices at exchanges.
I'll start buying April/May on behalf of my clients and continue to do so for at least a year.

If you are interested, send me a pm or an email, with these details:
Minimum amount i could buy from you, maximum amount i could buy in one operation, your preferred payment method and how to get in touch with you.

FYI: She is one of the founders.

That's awesome. It's substance like this that differentiates Monero from the pretenders. I'm confident that it will be *the* platform for financial privacy for many years to come.

It is nice to see her mention Monero. Trezor integration will be very helpful for BOTH security and attracting new users.

Can you make a view-key from the mnemonic seeds, easy?

perhaps with http://xmrtests.llcoins.net/addresstests.html ?

You can just use http://xmr.llcoins.net/ as well. Always remember keeping your mnemonic safe is of utmost importance.

Ok thanks for that info, we are not far off.
Will there be any updates that need to be installed on the users end?

There will be a point release soon with some important bug fixes (mentioned in the dev-meeting and a few days back on IRC as well). Furthermore, you should be running any 0.9.x version (preferably 0.9.2 when it's out).

The fork is close at hand.  Any one heard or read any new news around this?

I'll ask on IRC. However, the only thing necessary is for miners to be on 0.9.x in advance of the fork.

Users do as well.

If you are running anything older, get upgraded now.

Yes, load the mnemonic seed into simplewallet and ask for the view key.

Obviously do this with due care for your security since the mnemonic seed itself (but not the view key) will allow spending the coins

"commit to disk" he means never save the seed in a text file, for example.

there are also ways to only save files in ram in linux, so they get erased upon shutdown.

I think you could improve safety here by booting from a Linux (Ubuntu) USB stick with the generator on it. @phishead, I could walk you through it if you want on IRC.

Maybe post is here afterwards?  I'm sure others would benefit greatly from such a tutorial if it does not exist!

Yeah I'll try to make a guide for it, it's long overdue as well.

Thanks

I guess the video I made... is too long?

Ginger,

I'm curious why for this video (which by the way you did an excellent job on  Smiley) you opted to use the javascript version (or at least it appears to be) instead of the core code for full nodes?

Was it a space issue? Or some other reason?

Simplicity really. On linux, the monero binaries (at that point... and maybe today, i dunno) have some dependencies, so I didn't want to have to apt-get all the things to make it work.

Probably because the UI is more convenient. Furthermore, the code is basically the same as simplewallet uses.
