For those following, there is a glibc exploit that affects all Bitcoin nodes (and all nodes of Bitcoin clones).

It can be exploited by an attacker in a number of scenarios, primarily when resolving DNS seeds.
Monero is unaffected by this, as we do not use glibc's getaddrinfo().

Seems to me bitcoin modified forks have a big advantage over obscure poorly developed cryptonote forks for several reasons. They get to benefit from a well developed infrastructure. See the case of the Electrum wallet, which can be easily adapted to serve as a Dash lite wallet.

I've been there and I feel your pain. I dunno if this is the place for refugees (over say Ethereum) and they do have a stringent dress-code here (Sunday Best)…

Congrats to that guy for de-anon'ing the whole SDC chain - thats some pretty major pwnage. In fact it was so impressively devastating Im slightly worried about the same fate befalling XMR. These things always require a small leap of faith, however, and you guys might be bright enough to pull it off…
All cryptography requires a leap of faith.
The thing that protects Monero's transactions from being deanonymised is the invocation of a secure hash function to create the key image. As has already been extensively written on, Monero uses a secure hash function for this.
A break in a secure hash function has much wider consequences than deanonymising Monero - there would be a significant amount of brokenness in other systems. Trusting Monero's privacy is a matter of trusting hash functions, cryptographic signatures, elliptic curve cryptography, and your system's PRNG (pseudorandom number generator). Since you're already trusting all those things to use Bitcoin and not have your funds stolen by a cryptographically breaking attack, you should be able to trust Monero in the same way.

You're searching for a light wallet, so I presume you're not so keen about your personal privacy? In that case mymonero.com is the best. Tecnically they can *NOT* run with your money.
If you're really keen on privacy, a full node is your best bet. That applies to all cryptocurrencies, dash and bitcoin included.

Yes, you need to start bitmonerod (the daemon) to sync the blockchain. After that you can open simplewallet (make sure bitmonerod is still running) to transact.
So isn't there some light wallet like Electrum Monero that doesn't download the whole chain? Dash has two types of wallets, one that downloads the whole chain and another Electrum light wallet. The light wallet is perfect for storage.
Just checked. The Dash Electrum wallet takes around 80MB HDD space and eats 29MB of RAM.

Will better database compression be integrated into the client?
I just compressed the databse with 7-Zip and it has decreased from 7.9GB to 4.2.

I'd like to see database size decreased, yes. But I surely don't take Dash as a positive example, since I find its privacy concept quite primitive in comparison to Monero.I presume you are talking about the blockchain size. Database itself only uses a negligible amount of RAM (<100 MB) to store the blockchain.

One can also run the official simplewallet with a remote node. Node and instructions are here -> https://www.moneroclub.com/node. However, like I and others have stated before, using a remote node has a detrimental effect on privacy.
