Of cause there is a risk, that you can loose everything, but I personally do not believe that it can happen.
for that if so much money I would prefer bitcoin or eth or top 10 ranks on the market because it sure is longterm so it's better to check for good what coin is good for you to look at the market but for me bitcoin because sure the bitcoin is good to buy because it's cheap
In a bear market there are so many coins that seem undervalued so it is hard to make a call, but I would look into Lisk, Cobinhood, Oyster Pearl, Deepbrainchain. It is hard to determine whether a coin is undervalued or on it's way to vanish as there is not enough support from the community

Go for the big ones like Ethereum and bitcoin and also just a friendly advice spread your investment, it's a bad Idea if you only invest your money in just one coin, there is always a risk in crypto because it is very unpredictable, before you invest a big amount of money you must consider first the risk and always do your own research
I think, litecoin good for a long-term investment, will give you an advantage in the next 2-3 years and I would advise you not to forget some of these coins for investment.

Strange things are happen. A noob in cryptocurrencies want to invest 12000USD into assets he doesn’t know yet what kind clearly… Maybe I haven’t just money but it seems to me that divide and put money into three-four coins it is best decision.
I think you can choose to diversify your investment to reduce risk. Neo, btc, qtum, xrp, ada, etc. are all very good and have great potential for growth. I hope you seize the opportunity and luck. 
I see altcoins eventually shaking loose from BTC as utility coins become more common. IoT applications in particular I think will create and hold value. Value is what it takes for successful coins.
I think the best coins for a long term investment are Bitcoin and Ethereum. These options are rather safe because they determine the price of all cryptocurrencies, so I think they will grow in the future. The future of other coins is rather unpredictable.

With this amount that you are planning to invest in crypto, I will suggest you invest like 60% of that amount in bitcoin and ethereum as this are the best coin in crypto with great potentials of big profit if you hold on long term, then you can invest 30% in promising and good altcoin which will also yield big profit and then make a thorough research of a very good ico to invest the remaining 10%.
