I am quite late to reply on your post if you have not decided yet you can give both crypto currency in equal proportionate or you can ask him directly which crypto currency he/she want. I think it would be the best birthday gift for your friend If he/she keep these crypto currency for long-term. But in my opinion ripple has more potential than cardano. Ripple is already in Top 3 coins according to coinmarketcap.

It's a bit late to reply a month and a half after the original post, but this sort of 'should I keep (or buy, or sell) coin A or coin B' question comes up a lot. I think in general a good answer is to have some of both. If you like both coins, it makes sense to reduce your risk in this way instead of staking everything on a single coin.
I would in your place have chosen Cardano as a more optimistic project in terms of technical composition.

I'd put it in something with more short term potential. Both xrp and cardano have their draw backs if you'd ask me. I don't own xrp. I am invested in ADA, but this is a long term thing....

Why not both? I think you only should spend money to buy 1000 XRP only then you'll spend the left to buy ADA cause both of this altcoins are really good to invest in although you're going to invest for long term or short term. You should know that invest all of your money in only one cryptocurrency is not a good idea although it's a good coin or not.
I think Cardano will be a better choice than Ripple.
ripple is definitely now one of the most promising coins available on the market. I think that within 3 4 months the price can reach 70 cents for one coin and the end of this year can reach$1.
I would suggest to give Ripple 2000 instead of Cardano 5000, because Ripple is unpredictable coin and very risky, wherein Cardano is one of the strongest Altcoin in the cryptocurrency market. It has strong project.
I think you can buy EOS or NEO , it's better

I would advise you just to hold it, specially because we are in bear market now. Wait for prices to pick up and raise to new highs then sell bounties and airdrops of course if you don’t need that money sooner:)
Ripple is not comparable to Cardano. Ripple is shitcoin build on lies and speculations only. Cardano o nthe other side is very promising project that have a good future ahead in my opinion.
I do not really like Ripple-managed banks, so I'd advise you to sell the entire Ripple and leave Cardano (Ada). For all the money earned with the sale of Ripple, you can buy more Caradano tokens. 
I advise you to invest in both these crypto-currencies. they both have great potential for growth, so at their price you can afford to buy one and the other crypt. get them for a long-term strategy, be patient and wait for the growth rate.
