I do not even think that Gasol should play in Spain if you ask me. Dude managed to win the league before, and he made insane amount of money, is it really required to keep going? And after being in USA for so long, what is even the point of going back to Spain, dude could retire in USA and live a great life. USA may not be the best nation in the world when it comes to many important things, but if you are a wealthy person then suddenly it becomes one of the best nations in the world.

Even if he goes back to Spain, he could retire there and he would have enough money to never work again and live a very very luxurious life as well. That situation with Pau Gasol going back and playing never made sense to me, what was the "need" to keep playing, and will Marc have the same thing? In any case Marc doesn't look like a player who could provide anything anymore and instead of being a bad player, he should retire.

Compare to other players that still can play but no team shows desire signing them. That is more worst.

E.g. Lance Stephenson, Jeremy Lin, I. Thomas
Regarding Thomas, I thought he was so close to signing a contract with the Lakers, considering that he trained with James and Westbrook. However, LAL decided to sign a contract with Rondo. Anyway, as far as I know, Stephenson and Thomas also trained in the Mavericks 1 week ago. So I hope that these players still have a chance to return to the NBA.
I remember the rumor about that, unfortunately, Thomas still has no contract until now because of the injury he had and any team might be afraid of risking their money to him as he might get reinjured again.

Quote
Isaiah Thomas was then traded to the LA Lakers but played just 17 games and was later ruled out of the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to his right hip.

That hip problem really made his career go down, and if he will ever get signed, he will only be signed with a short contract with a very small amount.

Gasol probably felt disrespected while he was in Lakers that's why he insist on remaining in his home country.

There's no issue like that. Gasol is known to be vocal so I guess that's not an issue.

We don't know the real story but as a player, you know your limits and capacity. Like you said there's a pandemic so maybe Gasol misses his family so much and not just about the money. Not the end of basketball for him. Just need some space and a break.

That was just hype I guess. IT won't be signed by the Lakers and that 90% chance to happen.

I hope other teams will give chance for IT but we can exclude the Lakers now on the rumor.

This guy is one hell of a lucky guy.

Restricted free-agent forward Jarred Vanderbilt has agreed to stay with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a new three-year, $13.8 million contract, his agent, Kevin Bradbury of Rep1 Sports, told ESPN on Friday.
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/32184591/jarred-vanderbilt-agrees-3-year-138-million-contract-stay-timberwolves-agent-says
After 2 bad seasons with a lot of injuries he found his way back and played 64 games last season. Now, he is collecting the fruits of his hardwork with the Timberwolves and is given another good contract despite his background.
Continuing the article is another guy who re-signed with the T'Wolves.
Quote
Also on Friday, restricted free-agent guard Jordan McLaughlin agreed to a new three-year deal with the Timberwolves, sources told ESPN. McLaughlin is a two-way contract success story for the Wolves' development program.
I still don't see a good 2nd team for them although I think they have a strong first five. DLo, KAT, Edwards, Prince, and Beasley.

I thought it's a bit early for him to retire and he may still need the money from a few years contract since we're still in a pandemic. Good for him and his family if he's already financially stable.

I think its the right decision for him to go back and play in his native country if no teams are going to pick him up. He has been in the NBA with his brothers for many years, maybe it's time for him to retire.

He will contribute a lot to Spain, not just by playing but he could be a mentor as well.

There's still no confirmation if he will play for the Spain basketball team. Reports just said that Marc Gasol wants to stay with his family.

Either way, there's no need for him to play but rather be part of the coaching staff or mentoring team instead. He will be a good addition to the staff team as he knows well his national team. Unless there's a call of duty, that's the time he needs to consider playing back.

Reading this, I remember how Luc Longley returned to his basketball career not as a player but part of the coaching staff of Australian National team.

off topic, but just like how old guys contribute with their favorite sport, Gasol can join the national as he's always part of their Olympic Team, he can develop more talents and build a good foundation for team Spain.

No need for him to play as he doesn't need to prove anything, just like with his older brother. Mark also won an NBA title, a good part
of Raptors missing pieces to win the 2018-19 title.

But he makes his decision, he knows also in his mind that he will not be as effective as he was before. He is not getting any younger and there are young players now that are willing to excel, so they will be given the priority to develop than a veteran player that could not anymore give the same contribution he gave when he was still younger.

That's correct.

He knows to himself that he's not the same as before. Being signed in a team is not a problem to him but still, he chose not to be signed. Compare to other players that still can play but no team shows desire signing them. That is more worst.

As @Sanitough mentioned, Gasol will not be playing with the Grizzlies next season, he will be back to his hometown, so you can't expect a contribution from him on his old team. We know how good Gasol is, he was a defensive player of the year once, but his time might be over in the NBA.

Ohh, missed that. Actually, He could not play his best while he was with Lakers. But, You know, he was at his prime time at the Grizzlies before he played for the Lakers. That's why he wanted to back with his previous team and knows the environment, players, and staff that should give him a morale boost which could lead to him playing well again consistently. With the height that he has got, and teaming up with players like Memphis, this could be a good season for Marc Gasol, I think.

I hope so because if you look at Mark Gasol's record in his last season with the Grizz, he averages 17.2 PPG, that's a decent figure for a big man. Though Gasol won a championship with the Raptors, his production has gone down, now that he is back with the Grizz, we will see that he will get more minutes again and will be comfortable playing with some familiar faces.

Gasol joining his previous teammates and the staff and coaches would give him a headstart with the Grizzlies. I am expecting the Grizzlies to have a better season than what they had the past season with the addition of Gasol. With a stronger defense overall and if Gasol can get back to his high-scoring days, the Grizzlies fan are up for a treat this season. And considering the line-up, Gasol should be getting more time on the pitch than what he got with the Lakers.

After a bad season with the LA Lakers, I don't know if he will be utilized well by the Grizz. he will be a good backup center because he is not anymore in his prime. He is 36 years old, normally at that age, a player would only play limited minutes and that would probably happen to Mark Gasol.
The new center of the Grizzlies is Steven Adams, so Gasol will play with him as Jonas Valančiūnas was traded for Adams.
update list of roster.

Well, he is 36 years old but still, I like his positionings. And as a center, positioning is important. You can play as a center even after you have aged, that's because positions like point guards need to be quite fast and agile and have better dribbling skills which is not the case for centers. Height is a big advantage for the centers and Gasol has got that. Let’s hope Gasol does good this season with Lakers with whatever minutes he gets on the pitch.

Now that he's back and with his old uniform, hopefully we will see him playing at his best, though he's already past prime his prime, but his good knowledge playing this game may add up with the young Ja and Brooks.

Together with Adams, Memphis can try to work it out using these twin towers. Knowing Gasol, he can play as power forward and even set up good plays for Morant, giving this young super star a much easier job.

He won't be playing in Memphis, for the Lakers, they have said a good chunk of money for trading Gasol, avoided a luxury tax penalties and make room for one more player that is willing to a 1 year contract.

At least Gasol now is closer to his family, he is already 36 years old, on the brink of his basketball prime or maybe based on his performance with the Lakers last season just averaging 5.0 ppg, also way past his best years.

I thought he will play too, turns out he will stay in Spain and probably this trade is just for formality reason.

Lakers deal Marc Gasol to Grizzlies for draft pick, but Gasol intends to remain in Spain

Quote
Though Gasol was traded to Memphis, he's not expected to play for the Grizzlies. The team will reportedly work to release Gasol so he can stay in Spain with his family, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The move indicates Gasol, 36, won't play in the NBA during the 2021-22 season.

he will be close to his family, that's good for him, at least he was able to save for his future already.

Gasol is back to his old team, that's good for him, the Grizzlies now have two big men who can help to improve their defense.

The young Grizz showed their grit during the last playoffs, I expect them to be better in the next season as they have a big man with playoffs experience and a champion as well.

hopefully, Gasol will be able to get his numbers back.

Gasol didn't perform well after being traded to Lakers, I remember him back during his prime, the dark-horse Grizzle always bring competitive games against a heavy favorite west team.

Yes, him and Zach Randolph that time was a beauty to watch, two bruiser and hard nose offensive player.

Guys talking about Marc Gasol. He will be waived after the trade to Grizzlies.
Reports say he agreed with the buyout and I think he will just play in Spain for his remaining strength as a veteran.
It is a sad reality for us NBA fans but he will be near his family now and I think he will prefer it that way.

The Lakers made a good cap space after doing the trade and so does the Grizzlies after the buyout. So the question is, who are their targets for making that move?

Lakers is already fine with their big man already, I don't think they will still make a move.

Gasol didn't play that well in Lakers and didn't contribute too much when they needed him against the Suns.

Looks like that him and his brother Pau decided to play on their home country Spain and for me, that would be a good decision. They might perform well too in different leagues. In regards to who are their targets right now, I thought that a big that can fill the center position might do for them but it seems that there aren't good centers out there for now so... I don't know maybe another guard in case either Westbrook or Rondo will get injured.

His brother Pau seems have retired already, I don't see him anymore active in the NBA. But anyway, even if they will both retire, they are have already fulfilled their main goal which is to win a championship, and not only that, both big men earn a decent amount of salary during their prime.

By the way, Paul Gasol also started with the Grizzlies. https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gasolpa01.html
And his numbers are really good.

Breaking news: Lakers are trying to sign wilt Chamberlin to a 3 year vet minimum deal.  If they can't land wilt they are going to look to see if Dr. J is available to give them a driving presence in the paint.  Let's see how this unfolds.
Source?? You made me laugh with this at least Cheesy. If that happens, he will be the oldest player to play in the NBA at 63 years old. Anyway, this will not happen  Grin Grin

Gasol didn't perform well after being traded to Lakers

Playing time plays a big role. I don't know what happened but his average stats didn't improved nor maintain because of lack of playing time given to him.
That's the obvious reason, he will not gain more playing time because the Lakers have Davis who loves to run, while Gasol was accustomed to a grit and grind play. His 3 point shooting also was not seen much with the Lakers, so maybe another chance for him to prove his real worth by going back to his old team.
