Melo, Ariza, and Howard definitely will have a secondary role on the court. However, they might be very useful if top players of the Lakers starting lineup are injured as it was during the previous season. So it looks like the Lakers are trying to create a strong bench.
IMO they want a defensive team. A team that would highlight the true nature of Frank Vogel. Defense.
They may be old but they are known for their high-level aggressiveness in D and that's all the Lakers need that had been missing last year.
Offense is not much of a problem with WB, Lebron, Melo, and Davis.
Dwight is also a good backup for AD, to avoid stressing his injuries and give him minutes to rest. I just realized they are now filled with big men. Giants.

They have also Marc Gasol, another big men who has experienced as well, and a threat to the outside. He didn't get a good exposure last season, but I'm sure Vogel will insert him if needed as we have seen in the playoffs against the Suns as he hit crucial 3. They let go of Caruso, but added Ariza to play the defense for them against shooting guards of the opposing team.

Until Mark Gasol prove his worth with the Lakers, then I might start believing that he is still a good piece for their success. Gasol is good, no doubt about it as he already won a championship back in Toronto Raptors, but playing with Lebron could be different so he might not fit with his current team.

^^ Damn, that's a solid starting five for the Lakers, I agree, they shouldn't have let Howard go to the Sixers last system. Anyhow, I'm sure the only concern is the healthy of this players, all of them have previous a history of injuries, so we do hope that they will remain healthy next season so that we can see the potential of this Lakers five. I just do hope that the fate of the Lakers today will not be the same as this one:  Grin

They shouldn't let go of Dwight last season and gamble on those big men that haven't got enough skills to take the lakers to the finals and thankfully they acquired him again now with some veterans that will be able to help the team to compete on the playoffs. Looks like AD has enough time to rest and LBJ has enough bench players now to suffice their team needs whenever he will get injured in this upcoming season.

Now they’re saying LaMarcus Aldridge is considering coming out of retirement to give it another shot with the Nets after talking with his doctor! This Nets vs Lakers matchup in the Finals next year seems to be destiny. Other teams would be wise to think of this as a rebuilding year because if either of those two teams can stay healthy I don’t think the rest of the NBA has much of a chance. As a fan of good basketball you have to be excited.

Kemba getting added to the Knicks.  Immediate upgrade over elfrid peyton.  They got him on the cheap too since okcity bought his contract out.  I know he has knee issues but now the Knicks have decent depth at the guard spot was getting worried for a minute.  Now just need big mitch to stay healthy for once.

Im kinda jealous for you guys who are able to see games in person live. For us Filipino fans, we need to travel thousands of miles plus the ticket lol. You gotta spend a lot to see them. The only time we can see NBA players in person is when they come visit here. I see few of them, but what I really want to see is the intense game in the arena especially during the playoffs.

Anyway, the Lakers is always fun to watch live since Kobe up until now.

Btw, any news about Kawhi Leonard possible destination?
I've heard rumors he might land in Utah or GSW.
The average cost for me to go to any game and watch it and come back is around 11k dollars, or more like 3 years of minimum wage. That should tell you how impossible for me to even "consider" something like that let alone actually do it, think about it we are talking about just 3 years of wage for going, watching, and coming back. I can't even afford nba official streaming service and illegally watch it from streams honestly.

However at the end of the day, NBA is just amazing and I would not miss it for the world, it is just THAT important in my life, I used to watch the replays from a horrible tv news show that simply had a sports section for half an hour everyday that included around 5 minutes of recap of each game and scores and maybe some moves if we are lucky (usually not even that), that was around 25 years ago, and I am still finding ways to keep track of my favorite sport, it is just amazing.

Lots of transfers and whopping extensions for their contracts that's happened recently. What you guys feel about the transfer of Caruso to Chi?

Did Lakers just lost one of their best bench?

The Lakers still have THT, they also added Kendrick Nunn (from Miami) and also Kent Bazemore (from GSW), so I think the Lakers still have some good bench players. Although Caruso really blossomed in the Lakers uniform, but it's business to he choose a more lucrative contracts with the Bulls.

Lebron + Carmelo, that will be an awesome tandem in the wing.
Maybe I'm just feeling that regret since I'm used to watching Caruso with them.

But yeah, this new addition on the Lakers as Carmelo signs with them is another thing to watch and await for.

It’s official Carmelo Anthony has signed a one-year deal to play on the Los Angeles Lakers next to LeBron James. Between Carmelo Russell A.D. and LeBron that is going to be one hell of a team. I’m genuinely excited to see the season start so I can watch them all play together.
That's to be honest a 30+ roster there for the Lakers but I wouldn't doubt that they could still make a difference on the court, they're not to be ignored as a team. Veteran type of players coming to Lakers, it's just a hell of a show they brought to purple and gold team.

I think the fact there are so many of them should help with keeping their minutes down. I’m betting we see LeBron’s lowest usage rate ever in this upcoming season, while vets like Dwight & Carmelo will likely be seeing reduced minutes as well. With a little luck they’ll all manage to stay healthy and we’ll get a show come playoff time.

It's hard to keep up with the trades that's going on. It looks like some teams are desperate to win the title next season by signing all the big name veterans while selling younger prospects. I know it's still early but I feel sorry for them hehe. I think they won't make it far but goodluck to them anyway. I'll just wait and watch until the window is closed.

It's very competitive right now, any team just wanted to have the advantage with the players willing to move or are being traded by their current teams. There are players that are paid with minimum 1-2 years though, so it's like an experiment for the team and will want to see how the new players fit it. And then there are players coming back to their previous team like Dwight Howard, and then we have players who chooses to move, even though they've given a ring, like P.J. Tucker. So it's one hell of a trading that we have witnessing right now.

On their prime oh wow! that tandem is unstoppable, but for now not really sure if that still works.

Definitely, but we all know that they are contemporaries, so it's hard for them to be on the same team during their primes.

The good thing is they still have AD and Drummond plus Westbrook which will give them more explosives. everything  is on coach Vogel to handle and rotate those superstars that he have inside his roster.

With all of them healthy this coming season, chance for the title still possible.

Drummond move to Sixers if I'm not mistaken, they acquire Howard though, but not sure if that is a one on one trade. They also beef up their second stringers, although the big question is the age of this players, majority of them are above 30's or in their mid to high 30's. Ariza, Lebron, Carmelo is like 36++ already, Howard is 35.

DeRozan, Caruso, and Lonzo Ball. Yes, I can say that's a good addition to support Lavine. He had been shouldering everything since he was signed for Bulls and now they provided help for him. Vucevic was not traded right? I can say that's a solid roster and a good playoff contender if ever the coaching staff will do it right. Well, its Billy Donovan so yes, he can do it right.
Some new faces and I hope they can build chemistry as early as they could. Trades are going crazy. You wake up and suddenly another pretty name goes into a new team.
That kind of reinforcement gives them breathing, Caruso if he'll bring that same level of talents from LA.

I want to see him improving and providing help that Lavine needs, he's explosive and given the right system and allow him to create
his space, while knowing DeRozan he's also a good offensive player, big help for Lavine just need to jive and blend with everyone,.

Yeah that is what I am probably most excited about, seeing what Zach Lavine can do with a legitimate roster around him.  If he can't get them to a decent playoff seed then it will show he is not the super star that some ( or he ) believes that he is or is becoming.  To actually win a championship we would still need another super star, but this is certainly a good start for him.  I have to imagine if he plays well this year he will be offered a max contract..but we shall see.

Kawhi Leonard remains one of the biggest NBA free agents still available in NBA free agency and one site evidently thinks the Phoenix Suns have a chance to land him, if he doesn't return to the Los Angeles Clippers.
Kawhi the Fun Guy will surprise again everyone that he would stay and that's his promise to the Clipers. Well, time will tell but I'm hoping he's not.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/31950939/golden-state-warriors-stephen-curry-gets-4-year-215m-extension
Quote
Two-time NBA MVP and three-time champion Stephen Curry has agreed to a four-year, $215 million contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, making him the first player in history to sign two $200 million-plus contracts, his agent, Jeff Austin of Octagon Basketball, told ESPN.
Bad news for other teams. Curry ain't available no more. The Golden State Warriors locked him until the average retirement of an NBA player.
Congrats to Steph. He can easily retire after that four-year contract expires. The deal probably includes a parting gift from the Warriors management for what he's done to the franchise. I just don't know if that's also a great business deal as they prepare for the future campaign without him. Other players will also try try to push for that amount when they negotiate their contracts.

Indeed, he remain loyal to the Warriors so he is gifted with another contract extensions that will set him for life. I do believed that he will stay with the Warriors and then retire. He has given everything to them, becoming champions and one of the hottest them before they got injured. But with Klay returns next season, it will be a different Warrior team. And will have to work their way on the West as clearly the Lakers will be the favorite to win the conference and NBA too.

I'm not sayin that we are going to win a championship this year or the next, but what the Chicago Bulls have been doing this offseason is an absolute breath of fresh air for this lifelong bulls fan. For the longest time time under Gar/Pax it was clear they had absolutely zero clue what they were doing.  Making all these signs/trades etc that made no sense ( Jabari Parker, Dwayne Wade for ex). Now under Artūras Karnišovas leadership we seem to finally want to start being competitive and heading towards actually legitimacy.  Just a great feeling..FINALLY!
DeRozan, Caruso, and Lonzo Ball. Yes, I can say that's a good addition to support Lavine. He had been shouldering everything since he was signed for Bulls and now they provided help for him. Some new faces and I hope they can build chemistry as early as they could. Trades are going crazy. You wake up and suddenly another pretty name goes into a new team.

No the Bulls did trade for Nikola Vučević.  " The Orlando Magic traded All-Star center Nikola Vucevic and Al-Farouq Aminu to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Wendell Carter Jr., Otto Porter Jr. and two first-round picks, it was announced Thursday. The first-round picks going to the Magic are for 2021 and 2023, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski".

So it was not cheap but the guy is a 20 and 10 player and those don't grow on trees.
