We might be disappointed because however beautiful his system is but he don't have the kind of player suitable for this, then it's useless.

You have a valid point here. But exposing Gilas players to a system that they aren't used to might change the phase of the game compare sticking to their usual. Tab knows the majority of all Gilas players so he already has that idea where he will assign a player on a specific role.

But if in 2023 he could get the likes of Kai Sotto, Jalen Green, Jordan Ckarkson, Remy Martin and AJ Edu this could be huge to Philippine basketball.

That was a tough job and I doubt Tab have that big influence for that to happen. But who knows and I hope too that will happen. A big boost to our National team.

Jordan Clarkson as an NBA player, under contract, will surely again go in a tough process before he will be allowed to play for the country.

As for Jalen Green, I don't know if he will meet the FIBA eligibility requirements to be considered a Filipino citizen. But for other international cups, maybe he will be considered.

For Remy Martin, he is somehow eligible as he has dual citizenship. But our Nationals already have lots of guards although we need young ones.

AJ Edu is a big thing. At his height, he is athletic and defensive. The National should get this kid in the future.

Kai Sotto, no comment for now. Still watching his progress.

Coach Tab knows how to balance his players he can now pick the best one and trained them back, He already have knowledge with players that can be competitive and knows to play internationally, it's not hard for him to call those deserving players to play again and regroup, only those who are retired and already aging that's needed to be replaced and we all know that there are lots of new players who can fill in.

I'm not expecting much from coach Tab when he take over the Gilas head coaching job. We might be disappointed because however beautiful his system is but he don't have the kind of player suitable for this, then it's useless. Wow, this could be a great support for the Philippine team, only if possible. Kai Sotto is the only true full blooded filipino here but that's alright, we will all be proud as long as the Philippines will be able to raise their flags in the international competition. I have seen some highlights of the young fellas like Remy Martin and Jalen Green but haven't seen AJ Edu yet, I'll check this guy out...

last time, coach yeng were not able to handle the team as what people are expected, so the love was lost.

I was also disappointed the last time, looks like the Gilas team was not compose by the best players in the PBA, so I wasn't so excited to watch them play.
With coach Tab, I am sure there is going to be an improvement, better result than the last time for sure, and I think the suspension for our Gilas players was already over, so the Gilas coaching staff will be able to pick the best players in the PBA to represent the country again.

Good that he is not coaching a PBA team so there will be no bias in the selection process, people will be happy to know if he will be the one to officially handle the team. Can't wait to see the Gilas play then, hopefully this pandemic will be over soon so they can start flexing their muscles in the court.

I guess I have to agree with you, I've seen Coach Reyes and Yeng handle the Gilas, they are not anywhere near to the achievement of coach tab though he only handles in one time if I am not mistaken. The time coach Tab handles the Team Gilas, we were recognize in the FIBA world and that's the time where Romeo was so popular, I think we will again see that under Coach Tab, so I support the SBP's decision to put him back.
Coach Yeng and Coach Chot are really good coaches with different styles in rotating and selecting their best players. They have also their different stats and achievements regarding on how they brought the Philippines into a international stage like FIBA, SEABA and so on.

However, I agree with you @Vaculin. I also want coach tab baldwin to bring back because he knows the play in international setting. And when I saw how he coached the Gilas before, it is way too different than others. I would also like to get back the players handled by him in Gilas. They are more aggressive and real court players rather than the picks of Yeng (Belga) and Reyes (Gio).

Filipinos are good in criticizing coach, we don't love our own so maybe getting a foreigner coach would help the Gilas get the support.
I one saw a post when Gilas loss, it says "UTAK HINDI PUSO"... that would really hurt the coaches as in the eyes of the fans, it's the coach that should be blame.

Mark Dickel says Gilas program in good hands with Tab Baldwin
Quote
EVEN though Gilas Pilipinas has yet to name a permanent head coach, Mark Dickel said the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is headed in the right direction after installing a program headed by Tab Baldwin.

AGREE OR DISAGREE?

Me, I agree, I like Coach Tab to handle the Gilas as under his coaching job last time, Gilas were able to perform well in the international competition.
So hopefully with his guidance it will make Gilas a more exciting team to watch again.

Pinoy coaches are really longing for a scenario that Philippine team should coached by a full bloodied Pinoy. However there is no suitable coach at the moment IMO. They were all given an opportunity to lead the Gilas but there seems to be a stagnant in term of development and program. I think hiring a foreign coaches, specially from Europe would help develop and instill discipline on our national players. There will always opposition by this decision of SBP but at least they are doing the right thing for Philippine basketball.

Dickel's statement makes sense.

Tab Baldwin, being a professional coach with lots of great achievements and already knows the system in an international basketball league (he coached several teams in different countries on his whole coaching career), how can we say that he will not contribute well to the national team. As for the country, he was involved as a coach with PBA and UAAP for many years. He knows a lot.

I understand the sentiment of Chot Reyes, who else doesn't want to rise on top with a pure Filipino effort? But let's face the fact that our National Team needs all the help, guidance, and support they can get when it comes to international games,

Even if they will make a survey to get the voice of the fans, I am sure the fans would like Coach Tab to handle the Gilas again.
We've seen how they improve the last time he manage this team, and players that we are not expecting to explode exploded during the international games. I'd like to see Romeo and Abueva leading this team again, they are the energy providers of the team and that makes the Gilas fun to watch though they are an undergo in international competition.

I agree as well, but this won't close any doors for any deserving coach that may come up, right? I just read about coach Chot Reyes comment with regards to the nationality of whoever would going to coach the team.
Dickel’s comments came after a statement made by former Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes who said that the job should go to a Filipino.
I just hope that his won't cause any controversy in the long run.

With all due respect to everyone, I think discussing everything about Kai Sotto is an off-topic here. Yes, he is a Filipino pride but he is on another league and no linked at all to PBA league.

Lol, have already remind them that Kai being on NBA G League is not appropriate on this thread but it seems the urge to discuss on the future of Kai Sotto in the NBA is so tempting  Smiley.

Anyways, i hope that this would be the last comment involving Kai on NBA and let's be on topic by discussing updates and new from the PBA.

Kai has a bright future ahead of him in basketball sans injury but for him being drafted in the NBA or G League is not appropriate to be discussed in this PBA thread, no offense mate but that is just my two satoshis thought.

I made a research on why Danny I. declined such offer and found out that the league nullified the offer sheet as it violated team's salary cap rules.

Tanduay Rhum Masters is fun to watch back then, they are a title contender with Sonny Alvarado, Eric Menk, Rudy Hatfield, Dondon Hontiveros and Jason Webb. I just don't know the reason why they left the league all of a sudden, they are a rich team and can compete with SMC group of companies.

Yeah that's the reason. Tanduay can just offer a good contract to attract the best players in the league to form a strong team so the league voided the sheet.

Bong Tan is also right to called PBA a SanMig league during that time as they are the most influential company in the PBA. Although I don't know if Tanduay is really doing that behind the paper contract.

I think, everything on Kai right now is just plain hype.

You can really expect that people hype this so much because we don't have anyone who are even close to Kai's achievement in the international league, this young man is a full blooded Filipino, so if he will be get this dream to be playing in the NBA, that would make the whole nation proud.

Whether it's a hype or not, I think we should support our fellow man here, he will be bringing glory to the Philippines once he will be successful.

Recent news from a facebook page NBA Buzz. Kai Sotto just signed into NBA G-League pro program, and he's the very first international player to do it so. Meaning he's the first person born outside the America who did it.

So the NBA rules has changed allowing now a player that haven't been graduated in college.

I think it's a bit more early for him to join that league, but let's see what is Kai Sotto now, how great he's changes overall.

His physical built and youth makes me worried if he can really make   it to the pro league although it  can help him enhance his skills but still the level of physically is different and might he's talent will be wasted if he will acquired a fatal injury by playing on big bodies.  But since he's decision  has been made then as fans we should support him and lets hope that he will be the first natural born Filipino to land on NBA.
This decision to play at NBA G-League will give Kai more exposures though  he's still young and there are lots of heavy competition to face since all of the players wanted to showcase their  talents in order to get attentions from scouting NBA people.
Lets all support him he would be the first ever pure blood pinoy to reached this league.

Right, Kai Sotto need to gain some weight as G-League is as physical as in the NBA. In the process of gaining weight, i doubt if he can maintain his mobility/athleticism, knowing the Americans they are so athletic. How could he depend "drive-by lay-ups" if he is so slow. Like i said before, it's good to have a full bloodied Filipino in the NBA but this time Kai is so raw.

Quote
All of the NBA figures I interviewed at the 2020 All-Star Weekend here in Chicago where Kai participated at the Basketball Without Borders (BWB) camp opined that the 7-foot-2 phenom can use at least a year in college.

The goal, they rationalized, was to allow Kai to gain some weight and acclimatize to the physical demands that await the professional ranks. Kai, it was pointed out, needs to work on his speed to avoid being repeatedly victimized by drive-by lay-ups.

Quote from a sports writer who closely followed Kai's career in the US.
