The difference between a gambling addict and a professional is likely the difference between having a winning night or a losing night. Lol. In reality, I think gambling addiction just boils down to greed. People feel like they deserve to win a ton of money and think casinos are the way for them to get what they deserve. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work like that.

it has nothing to do with greed and everything to do with escapism. read the book addiction by design. i never really understood gamling addiction until i read that book. my friends would goto the casino with $10k and end up losing it all to the slots over 8+ hours.. i could never understand it, i'd say to them, bro you walked in with a jackpot what the hell are you doing? it's not about winning, it's about getting into the zone... and wins are only seen as more time on the machine, thus the zone.

crazy.

So anyway, I applied as a merit source :)
A lot of the signs are subtle and often overlooked by family members who are the first people to catch these. But a behavioral change is common and usually ends up in the hands of the lady of the house.

Every gambler understands these signs and does not accept the fact that they are addicted because they feel guilty and ashamed of themselves and their actions and that leads to more problems. It is manageable in the early stage if they are moderating their habits but for many people this is difficult and they need professional help.

The key word here is moderation. Any habit forming activity needs to be moderated.

As gambling addiction can be a challenging issue that can have a very harmful impact on an individual's life. it is always recommended to find a professional helpb rather struggling with it. Do you agree with those behaviours? If not then you can suggest some, that can be added to this topic.

But the problem now is that gambling addicts often don't feel that they are already in a vicious circle of gambling. They thought that what they were doing was normal and thought that if one day they won they would pay for everything they sold, so he thought that people should just be normal with him. That's why it's quite difficult to treat these gambling addicts unless they want to change themselves.

Some gamblers who have developed a gambling addiction sometimes overlook the symptoms and indications that they are struggling to restrain their urges since their main goal is to just enjoy playing without considering the risks. They are very willing to take all the risks just to fulfill their desires. They will only notice that they have fallen into gambling addiction once they are already facing the consequences or once they are losing even their assets and liabilities.
Maybe that's the reason why they notice that they need to seek professional help at the early stage of the addiction. That's why it is important as early as possible or before we enter gambling that we should set limitations and know when to stop. We should never expect too much winnings when gambling and we must always know how to deal with its risks wisely.

  • Preoccupation with gambling.
  • The urge to increase wagers to achieve the same level of excitement.
  • Having difficulty in controlling, cutting back, or stopping gambling despite several attempts.
  • Lying about gambling activities.
  • Borrowing money to gamble.

Although I am not currently addicted to gambling I had to struggle with gambling addiction for a while in the past. When I checked the list in the subject content I remember that most of them were myself at that time. In general I spent all my time gambling, when I lost I made bigger bets to regain that loss, I had a very difficult time controlling myself about gambling and I was not telling the truth to the people around me about the money I spent in gambling. I see that the only thing I don't do among those here is not to gamble by borrowing money from others. Although if we are addicted to gambling we should not borrow money from others or sell any of our assets for gambling.

Take a look at my merits, It's lucky number
  • Preoccupation with gambling.
  • The urge to increase wagers to achieve the same level of excitement.
  • Having difficulty in controlling, cutting back, or stopping gambling despite several attempts.
  • Lying about gambling activities.
  • Borrowing money to gamble.

I have all of the traits you mentioned, they are absolutely devastating and make a gambler a problem gambler. In addition to the characteristics you mentioned, I have another addition that I personally felt when I became a problem gambler a few years ago. The main thing I felt was about my mentality, I felt depressed at that time, this depression also had a negative impact on various aspects such as being lazy to work and also not socializing with others.

Now I am aware of my mistakes in the past, there is no more gambling for money in my mindset, I gamble just for fun like playing a game and hoping for a little money.

The things you have mentioned are the common signs a gambler experience the moment they are slowly falling into addiction or on addiction's very first phase. Restlessness and uneasiness because they can't gamble due to certain reasons is one of the main signs. They are craving for it to the point they are willing to bet and play more and more, forgetting their limitations. This even go worse as time passes by. Hence, it's really important to be checked the moment you find yourself changing and developing bad habits.

Professional help is necessary especially to those people who have severe gambling addiction. They need medical intervention, rehabilitation, and counselling, so that they will heal and get the right treatment for their case. Afterall, every addict has different way of coping up a there's no really one solution fits all. Every case of addiction depending on the level and on the patient himself has different method to be done for it to be addressed and treated successfully.

I also noticed some regularity. Usually, beginners get lucky a few times, which makes the person think they are lucky and fuel their greed. But one day he loses everything, and then that trait in a person begins to appear, whether he is passionate or not. Consistency in the game and successful wins make him a person who is not ready for losses; he doesn't believe he can't win back the loss. If you do not stop at this moment, then the person falls into the trap of the game. And yes, it is correct to talk about the help of specialists, but a person suffering from gambling addiction must understand that he needs help, as long as he thinks that he has no problems with the game, no psychologist will help.

Yes, I do agree this is what will likely happen to those addicted to gambling. They lie, they steal (borrow without paying), and it's difficult to understand them whenever they feel the urge to gamble. This kind of signs of a gambler needs some discussion with his/her relatives or a specialist that handles this type of problem.
Before, I had a friend who cannot stop himself from doing the same gambling game on the street every day. I didn't understand why but I know it's not good for him because his behavior when he loses is off, he is always angry and there are times he doesn't want to talk to anybody. When I started to gamble, that's when I understood what is happening to him.

Every addiction is at a level even gambling, and gambling addicts are addicted on different levels and to the person on the highest level of addiction, that is the most addicted person, they have usually experienced the different signs of addiction at one time in their addiction, both these mentioned and the other signs like them becoming restless when they cannot gamble. Some signs are more serious than others and can reflect how addicted someone is. If someone becomes restless or agitated when they cannot gamble, that person has really become very addicted and they require help.

Gambling addiction is no joke and it can be incredibly difficult to overcome without strong dedication. It should be treated with the same seriousness as any other type of addiction and the key is to gradually reduce gambling activity until it eventually disappears. I believe that if you have faith in yourself and believing that you could overcome it, then you'll do sooner or later.

Some of my friends who are addicted to gambling and it has had a huge impact on their lives both financially and morally. Luckily some of them have managed to quit and are making progress towards a better life. However, there are others who are still struggling with the addiction and facing numerous issues as a result. I believe that their family life is also really affected (I mean family issues) as I am close to them and they tell me a lot of stories.

All of these are correct and if you have these signs then you are at a dangerous level and you need a professional help
you are at the peak of risk if you start to borrow money, for me, it's not right to borrow or take a loan just to gamble, it's risky and it's double jeopardy since there is no guarantee that you can win with the money that you borrow.

You are not playing for fun because borrowing money is not right and fun and you are out of logic borrowing money is for emergency cases only and you have a way to return it, those who borrow money to gamble have lost their reputation.

Most people have to much pride to admit they have a problem. You have to get someone to cross that bridge before you can think about getting them help. If you have any self control just find a hobby and focus all your free time on that hobby and family. It's not going to be easy for an addict, but if they can get family support as well as show self control they can stop gambling.
Yes, you are right. Every addict wants to get out of the feeling of wanting to continue gambling. If I were them, it would be difficult for me to do anything to stop myself from gambling. Try to find another hobby or be closer to my family. Go on vacation, have fun with them. tried by addicts. at least they could focus on shifting their eyes from gambling to something more positive.

I know it might not be easy but for the sake of goodness and a good ending it's not wrong to try it, maybe there are people here who feel addicted to gambling to try to divert it starting from focusing on family or hobbies, but my advice is also to change the mindset too it is better to be able to recover to get rid of gambling addiction.

I think someone also made this kind of thread before but I cannot just dig it anymore.

So, I'll just answer instead.
Those points given are real especially if you find yourself lying to your family about your gambling habits. Then loans, you have loads of it from the bank to your relatives, you don't even care what they will say anymore as long as it can provide your gambling problem.
Keeping secrets means you are having trouble with something and you don't want society to know about it. As for me, my wife always looks at my computer and I don't mind her having a peek, it's not like I am keeping something from her. If she sees me running a casino automated gambling she will just ask questions on how it works, maybe she will try to help me out if a cashout is needed to be done.
But the point is, I never made it a secret from her, it's a start of a bad relationship with someone close to you if you keep something from them and that means you may have a gambling problem too.

This kind of topic is frequent in this gambling sub board, most of them are locked if not abandoned.
Some of the locked discussion about gambling addiction are this thread:

Assess your gambling addiction level.

If anyone wanted more information they can refer on the locked/abandoned thread above.

@OP missed another behavior of a gambling addict that is getting easily restless or irritated if they are distracted while playing or being cut off from their gambling activities.  It is one major sign that a person is already a gambling addict.  It is important to know these behavior in order to know where is our standing as a gambler.  Knowing this signs and behaviour will help us recognize whether we are going to gambling addiction and help us to make early precautions and action to prevent ourselves to fall into gambling addiction completely.

  • Lying about gambling activities.
  • Borrowing money to gamble.

These are the common reasons why gamblers become addicted to gambling. Actually, not just with gambling. I'm other things too, those who are addicted to something, they also tend to do those things above.

I've also checked the article op mentioned to know more about those 3 types of gamblers. Gambling really need to have a strong mindset over your goal and what you want to achieve in gambling to avoid getting addicted. If you keep it in your mind that your only intention is for entertainment, you won't be spending so much time and money on gambling.

I think gambling addiction starts with lies. If you are not addicted to gambling you wouldn't act like its something to be hidden from your relatives. When you start lies like, "no I am not gambling everyday, I do it once in a month" etc you are definitely trying to convince others to believe your lie so they won't shame you. Addicted gamblers also avoid their responsibilities. They may forget about taking care of their baby, wife or husband, or just mum and dad. They may stop commiting to their workplace. Their finances may go terrible.

If you have one sign like lying about your gambling activities to your parents or wife. Would you be considered addict already? I Don't feel like I am.

This is interesting but you have to know that the lies you tell today may need another lie to cover for the previous not to be known. Somehow I believe that part of the attributes to know an addict in gambling is lying because you don't want people who are superior to you or people who can influence you to know about it either by stopping you by force or in the case of your parents who can deny you some comfort if you don't stop, so you have to keep lying about it while you continue in that act of gambling. When you are persistent in an act that other people see as inimical to you without you knowing about it or considering as such to you or you push it away with unnecessary and self satisfying excuse, that can make you an addict even to your wife

I think the gambling stigma is the common reason while people usually lie when it comes to gambling rather than an addiction. I don't gamble on a daily basis but I always lie and hide that I'm gambling to my parents since they will just scold me for wasting money even though I already have a decent job and use only a very minimal amount of my salary to gamble. I don't find lying to be a sign of addiction because gambling is not widely accepted as a normal game because it involves the risk of losing money in a short period of time in exchange for entertainment. On 3rd world countries, money is very hard to earn, I doubt a normal family will accept gambling as part of their life.

    • Lying about gambling activities.
    • Borrowing money to gamble.
These two are obvious signs that someone is an addicted gambler when he don't have money left but still wants to pursue gambling through borrowing. In real life, there have been stories that I've read that even their properties were put into sale because of the crave to gamble.

And at the end, they've sold the house and got nothing left because the money that was paid for the house or properties were just lost in gambling. That's sad but it truly happens in real life.

And the same goes for people that do lie because they don't want people to know that they're gambling or they don't want to admit that they're at a severe level of gambling addiction.
